Klassic Kolbert: Cruisin’ for a Boozin’

Man, it’s a slow news day around here!

Anyhow, I was thinking about London’s ban on drinking on the Tube (covered hilariously by John Oliver on last night’s Daily Show), and the “That wasn’t already illegal?” aspect of the story reminded me very strongly of this bit of work from The Daily Show‘s vault. Cheers!

Cruisin’ for a Boozin’ — Louisiana decides to join Minnesota, California and every other state in making it illegal to drink and drive.

I guess I’m not sure whether it’s still legal. That segment’s four years old, though, so I would hope not!

I remember this law well…it was a big deal at the time. I lived up the street from 2 or 3 drive-thru frozen Daiquiri places. The law was not really about drinking and driving — it’s always been illegal to drive drunk — it was about allowing open alcohol containers in cars. So they changed the law: now you can still buy a frozen daiquiri while driving, but you can’t put the straw in the top, cuz that makes it an open container.

Proud to be an ex-New Orleanian.

I think it may be illegal to walk in the French Quarter without a drink in your hand.

Those daiquiri stands in New Orleans are the craziest things I’ve ever seen, but one of the many reasons New Orleans is my favorite city in the world. Visiting there for the food alone is worth it.

I love this clip! Stephen gives Steve Carell’s performance in “Responsible Drinking” a run for his money here, though I believe it was just an act in this case. I think the drive-thru daiquiri lady liked Stephen:)

    Thanks for posting!

I still can’t believe they had/have drive through daiquiri stands! That’s crazy.

Drunk drive-trough Stephen, was adorably hilarious.

And I really hope that wasn’t actually aftershave he was drinking. I’d like to think it wasn’t, but he’s done some crazy things in the name of comedy. I’ve heard of it being done before, but it can’t exactly taste good, I’d imagine.

I enjoyed the White Russian daiquiri myself.

And there was a drive-thru liquor store in my home town of Lake Charles — you literally drove into the warehouse, they loaded up the beer or whatever into your car, and you drove out. Good times.

Hilarious! “You know who would love these? 19-year-old girls!” So true, remembering what I was like back then.

Anyone outside of Louisiania have drive-thru liquor stores? There’s one that I know of in St. Louis County, MO, about half an hour from where I live. Never been there myself, though.

GAH. Sorry about the double post.
My computer wigged out on me and it looked like it hadn’t posted. …and for some reason i’m not getting the Edit comment button either, but I dunno if that’s just me.

You can delete it the above (and this) post if you feel the need to do so, oh wonderful NFZ staffers! :)

Here’s a really cool place just north of downtown Dallas. I love stopping here on the way home from work after a particularly rough Friday. They get around the sealed container law by distributing in a sealed plastic bag. You can see more about this fantastic establishment by watching the YouTube video linked below.
