More info on Bloomsday at Symphony Space – Live Webcast!

Stephen Colbert in Bloomsday

We reported a few days ago that Stephen Colbert will be peforming in this year’s Bloomsday on Broadway on Monday, June 16, 2008, which starts at 7:00 pm. Today we received a comment from Brian from Symphony Space giving us a little bit more information about the evening:

The complete “Ithaca” episode will be performed by dozens of people between 7pm and 11:15pm. I don’t know exactly when Stephen will appear, but I know he won’t arrive until after it’s begun because he is taping that evening.

I know 2am is a long time to stay in a theatre, but Fionnula Flanagan reading the “Penelope” episode starting at 11:30pm is really extraordinary. I’ve heard her perform it a few times before, and it’s something I will never forget.

And remember, even if you can’t be there, there will be a live webcast on symphonyspace.org.

Fantastic! I’ll be sure to be listening to that webcast.

I’m simply grateful that the Symphony Space staff has reached out to us to give us more information. I’m assuming that the people who would attend this function would be aware of the play and would be looking forward to the experience, long as it might be.

I’m also very grateful that Stephen is going to share this experience with us by performing. I am always amazed when he is able to give to a community event such as this even with his extremely full schedule.

It’s not pushing the limit of MY attention span! :D

But driving home to Boston after is not going to be fun. I will have to take a catnap in the parking garage.

I think it’s important to keep in mind that this event is not actually about Stephen, however highly we think of him (and however highly he thinks of himself). The performance is, first and foremost, a celebration of James Joyce. That Stephen is participating in it suggests a real love of the source material, and recognition of that should carry with it a certain etiquette.

I suspect that the vast majority of the attendees will be there because of a shared love of James Joyce; they will not be expecting, nor would they likely be appreciative of, a sideshow by the Colbert Nation.

I understand the excitement over Stephen’s participation and would very much like to witness it, myself, but I do think that attendees should be at least as respectful of the show’s raison d’être and audience as about the participant(s) you are going to see. Put another way, I think that grumbles about the schedule or the material might be misplaced here.

I’m not trying to quash anyone’s enthusiasm, but I do want to remind people that this event probably deserves a different mindset than, say, a taping of the show.

Webcast? That’s so awesome. Wait… 7pm-2am? That’s… 3am-10am. I guess I could do that, and die the next day.

Wait, scrap that, I’m thinking in LA time differences. Midnight – 7am. Man, that’s pushing what I can manage… someone will be able to record this, right?

I don’t think I’ll be able to listen to the live webcast. Hmph.

If anyone can get a recording of it, I’ll give them a cookie!

(No, really. I just baked cookies. They’re quite delicious if I do say so myself.)

I am so excited that there will be a live webcast of this! Thank you Symphony Space for making this option available to us. I love James Joyce’s work (and Stephen too) so this is going to be a special treat.

Fionnula Flanagan’s part sounds good. I know I will be staying up to listen to the entire simulcast.

For those who are unfamiliar with “Ulysses” (as I am, for the most part), there is a cute, incredibly truncated, beyond-Cliff Notes outline of the story at the following web site (sorry, I’m a disaster when it comes to things like embedding site links) – http://home.bway.net/hunger/ulysses.html

reCAPTCHA: Chicago cross (as in angry? or Jesus?)
