Oh, lovely! TheaterMania is reporting that Stephen’s going to be joining several other distinguished participants in another Bloomsday on Broadway:
Colbert, Flanagan, McCourt, Seldes, et al. Set for Bloomsday on Broadway
By: Brian Scott Lipton · May 30, 2008 · New YorkStephen Colbert, Fionnula Flanagan, Frank and Malachy McCourt, and Marian Seldes will participate in Symphony Space’s 27th annual Bloomsday on Broadway, a reading from James Joyce’s classic novel Ulysses, on Monday, June 16 starting at 7pm. This year’s event will be hosted and staged by Isaiah Sheffer.
The event will feature the first-ever performance of the book’s “Ithaca” episode’s complete, unedited text, a musical interlude from Joyce’s Chamber Music, performed by soprano Judith Kellock, and a reading of the famed “Penelope” monologue by Flanagan.
Here’s the link for tickets from Symphony Space; do jump on these, if you can make it to the show (and are a James Joyce fan). For those of you on the fence (or those of us who won’t be able to make the trip), here’s a link to a bit of the audio we had posted here before. Stephen is, as ever, quite wonderful.
Thank you for linking to the other one!
He’s hypnotizing.
Oh how I wish I didn’t live so far away from NY.

OMG, this is really depressing, lol. I love love love that he’s doing this, but we’re gonna be passing through New York two days prior to the 16th! *GUH* We’re coming home from vacation then, and I dunno if I can convince my parents to stay an extra day. I’m sure as hell gonna try, though, thanks for posting this!

Two of my favorite people: Stephen Colbert and James Joyce. I’d do anything to go. *sigh*

I’m not familiar with Joyce’s work (despite many tours on the College Bowl circuit), but I’d love to go. Too bad I live in Florida :( AmandaIvy, you are so right when you say Stephen is hypnotizing. Insert generic “he could read the phone book and I’d pay attention” comment here :)
And that picture…can you say “cute overload”? That picture is 15 levels of ADORABLE.

Lol. He probably could read the phone book and hold my attention.
What was it that he said a while back- “aural velvet”?
I REALLY hope we can get recordings of this year’s Bloomsday on Broadway. (I just finished listening to last year’s recordings a few minutes ago, which were fantastic.)

I hope so too. I haven’t listened to all of last year’s yet – I’m saving it to listen to on the plane when I go to California in a couple of days (yay!) and it would so cool to have more to listen to when I get back.

James Joyce’s writing combined with Stephen’s voice and personality is such a huge win for me. I have a family obligation on June 16 but I really want to go to this. If only it were a week earlier. *Sad*
The picture to this post is one of my all-time favorite Stephen Colbert pictures.
My reCAPTCHA is “already devoted”. I love it!

Does anyone know of any reviews of the previous Bloomsday on Broadway? Was Stephen well-received? (I assume he was, or they wouldn’t have him back.)

To clarify, this year’s performance is actually the twenty-seventh Bloomsday on Broadway; the audio I linked (of Stephen as Bloom) was from 2005. And offhand, I don’t know of any reviews, although I’m sure if someone had the time to look, they might be able to find something.

Oops, sorry for saying “lat year’s” then! I meant “last time’s” actually. :)

sorry, I meant Stephen’s last appearance, not the last Bloomsday.
I have never read the book; I’ve heard some people read from it (New Orleans had an annual Bloomsday event) and that’s it. I listened to the “lotus eaters” segment today…and it was mesmerizing. I would like to find all audio readings with Stephen and listen to them repeatedly. Wow. Not just a fan thing…the reading was very well done by all involved.

Aww, to heck with work I’m GOING!!
Just got my tix. :)
It’s open seating BTW so I would get there before the doors open at 6:30 for decent seats.

*sigh* Stephen’s narration of the previously linked-to versions of Bloomsday are just wonderful to listen to. There’s something so very soothing and comforting about his out-of-character voice that I just can’t get enough of. Have fun, those of you who are able to go!

“does happy dance as ticket confirmation prints*
It sounds like there are a number of us who are going. And I’ve got plenty of experience positioning myself for general admission events. Do we want to establish some kind of sign for identifying ourselves to each other – maybe a subtle NFZ sticker on our foreheads, or a picture of a bear in a red circle with a line through it?
I have to say that I’m not a particular fan of James Joyce. I certainly prefer hearing his work read out loud to reading it. But after seeing Stephen live a few times, I’m with the “would watch him staring up at the sky for hours” people. The guy radiates an energy that you just can’t resist watching and being around.

So how many people would go to Waiting for Godot if Stephen were Godot?

… I commented just a second ago and got a long Error Message. :(
I’d probably go see “Waiting For Godot” whether Stephen were Godot or not. Lol.
Though it would be COMPLETELY amazing if he did actually do a show as Estragon or Vladamir!!!
I love “Waiting For Godot”. I’m a big fan of odd experimental/philosophical plays like that.

So how about if the Zoners going on the 16th wear a little red and white ribbon on their lapels/shirts so we can recognize each other?
Shout Out (Hey!):

Or perhaps Wriststrong bracelets…?

Bracelets are harder to spot on people than pins or lapel ribbons (which is why I didn’t suggest them) and a lot of non-Zoners might have them as well? Just my 2 cents.

Okay – here’s my dilemma, or good fortune – I can’t decide. I have VIP tickets to the Daily Show that evening which means feasibly I wouldn’t be able to make it to the theater until well after 8 pm. However, TCR also tapes that evening. Does anyone know when Stephen is scheduled to read? The site says it runs until 1 a.m.

I can’t seem to find on the Symphony Space site where it says the event runs ’til 1am, but I’m not surprised as these things are usually marathons. TCR usually finishes taping by 8p the latest, so even if Stephen were to get out of make-up, which he might not have to really, he could probably be at the venue somewhere around 9p; it’s barely 2 miles straight uptown.
@ vigwig – I may give the NFZ “high sign” a little more time to suggest itself. I would definitely do a lapel ribbon, but there are a number of those around, too. I was thinking of trying to find some kind of eagle pin or clip and use it in my hair, but, again, still just brainstorming.

The complete “Ithaca” episode will be performed by dozens of people between 7pm and 11:15pm. I don’t know exactly when Stephen will appear, but I know he won’t arrive until after it’s begun because he is taping that evening.
I know 2am is a long time to stay in a theatre, but Fionnula Flanagan reading the “Penelope” episode starting at 11:30pm is really extraordinary. I’ve heard her perform it a few times before, and it’s something I will never forget.
And remember, even if you can’t be there, there will be a live webcast on symphonyspace.org.

Thanks for the info Brian. You too somuch2kno. I think I am going to try to go. As an English major who studied in Ireland, this event is very special to me. The fact that Stephen is doing a reading definitely makes it a must see.
