DB – I know you asked for a wish list a few weeks ago, but recently I’ve been wondering if there’s some way to start a comments section *before* each episode. There are so many times I’ve dashed to the computer because I needed someplace/someone that would understand my needing to exclaim things like – “It’s the squirrel!” and “He got a haircut!” (I love my boyfriend, but even if he were awake all I’d get would be a lovingly indulgent smile, and that’s just not the same). Y’all get the episode guide up incredibly quickly, but if there’s any way we could have a place to squee either during the show or immediately thereafter, I, for one, would be incredibly thankful. Maybe something like a placeholder for the guide-to-come?
Does this sound like something you would participate in if we offered it? I know that this is something that is done on other parts of the internet, so we don’t necessarily want to reinvent the wheel. On the other hand, the dynamics of things here might encourage a dialogue between the Zoners that isn’t available on other sites, as we do have a really large and diverse community.
Offer your pros and cons, and opinions, in the comments. We’re probably going to do a test run of this tonight on the site, just to see if it might work.

I think that would be a great idea! I know that the colboards do that, but I think it would be nice to have that option on here as well. And I think there are viewers/commenters at this blog who may not visit the colboards that often and are looking for a place to chat about the show right after or during (commercials of) the show. Or there are even times when I’m looking to talk about a particular segment from or something Jon said on TDS.
I like the idea of it being a sort of “placeholder post,” where we can comment during/right after the show, and then when you guys put the episode guide up, that would replace the pre-show post so that all of the comments about the show would be in one place.

Personally, I DVR the show every night and dislike being disturbed at all while it’s on. Seriously…you turn your head away for even a second and there’s a good possibility you’re missing a great joke or character break. That’s not to say a LiveComment-esque function here wouldn’t be totally inappropriate, but it just ain’t my bag, baby. But kudos, DB, continuing to bolster the sense of community here on NFZ.

Another issue – would having these threads dilute the Urgent Fangirl Bulletins? Or could we incorporate them?

I’m actually kind of torn on this, because I’ve occasionally done some Live Commenting on LJ before, and it’s really cool, but once the show’s over you kinda feel like you missed it, and I always have a strong desire to stay up for the 1:30 a.m. rebroadcast, which isn’t good for my sleeping patterns, or lack thereof.
(I know how to used periods in a sentence, I swear.)
Perhaps if I had the self control to only comment during commercials, I’d be more for it. :)

I voted for live comments during the show, but I’ve kinda changed my mind already… I probably wouldn’t do it very often. A place to post before the episode guide comes up would be great. I do love the Urgent Fangirl Bulletins. (who does those?)
(I remember the night of the Andrew Young show: when it ended I went straight to NFZ and waited until the guide came up so I could communicate with the zoners…but that was a rare case.)

I voted yes because I’m thinking it might take a little pressure off the NFZ staff to get the episode guides up right away if we have someplace to comment/discuss as the show is airing, or right after it airs. I probably wouldn’t do it often myself (I can’t stay up to watch the show, I catch it on the reruns the next day), but for anyone who feels a desperate need to comment before the episode guide gets posted, I think it’s a good idea.

Another for the ‘absolutely a good idea but I’d probably not use it that much myself’ column. (During the show, anyway. Afterwards, oh yes, definitely comments ahoy.) There are definitely, definitely times when I just have to comment about something, but like AmandaIvy if I’m doing something other than giving my whole attention to the show, I somehow feel I’ve not gotten the whole feel of it so watch the repeat at 1:30. (Which isn’t that bad as I don’t go to sleep until 3 or so anyway, but still.)

Wow, y’all. I’m a little overwhelmed by the fact that DB brought this up for discussion at all. But at the same time, it highlights the very reason I’ve got these urges in the first place. I have to admit, I don’t feel the need to “reach out and touch” during the show that often, and I would definitely only do it during the commercials. But there are more times, right after the show, that I’m jonesing to somehow extend the high past the half-hour and exchange some squees and thoughts with the rest of you.
I’ve seen the “live”, during-the-show comments on the Colboards, etc., and I mean absolutely no disrespect ’cause I know a lot of us double-up and triple-up on other sites, but I really love the mix and heart and intelligence and depth and silliness and diversity that we all lovingly and respectfully bring to this site – inspired, of course, by the Lord of the Joy Machine, himself.

Hahaha, my computer and TV are on opposite floors, so no live commenting from me! A placeholder (as others have mentioned) may be a good idea (for a quick “Squee!” or “ZOMG” after the show), but I’m also fine with waiting ’till the episode guides are up to comment.
