Somehow when Stephen curses, it seems acceptable:) He’s the only person I know who actually elevates cursing. Oh, and I think the British do a bl**dy good job of it:)

I agree that Stephen elevates cursing — or actually that he comes to the situation from an elevated position. I think that’s a good way to put it. He’s not some inarticulate sort of thug or whatever who has no other way to express himself in the moment. He’s clearly a classy guy who is making a choice from many possible options, and that’s the way it comes across. We like him, and we’re willing (most of us, I think) to join in the spirit of the thing.

I love Stephen Fry, especially when he’s cursing. There was a sketch from “A Bit of Fry and Laurie” I believe, in which he’s ranting and raving while making a salad and he successfully uses the word “a**ing” as an adjective, among others that are a bit more explicit. It pretty much always reduces me to tears. The good kind.

Ditto. I wish the same for some of the stand-up specials on CC too. I was watching the new George Lopez special and there were so many bleeps, the jokes weren’t funny. It’s a shame ’cause he’s hilarious. Thank goodness for Secret Stash!

I understand that not everyone has the same “family values” as my family, but my family specifically raised myself and my younger siblings pretty much without censorship (my dad literally swears like a sailor- he was in the Navy), and we’re all totally fine. I mean, I don’t curse around my parents or anyone I consider to be “my elder” and specifically around children, though we were never specifically told not to curse in the first place.
It’s a really perplexing scenario and it makes me really doubt the whole concept of “censorship”. I mean, to a certain extent yes, but they’re just four-letter words.
I’ll hush now. As many have said, there is something about Stephen cursing that really is enjoyable. I guess it’s because we don’t really get to hear him do it often?

I agree… I was in the Army myself and it totally ruins your vocabulary. :)
My 12 yr old son watches TDS and TCR and he knows what’s being bleeped, so what’s the point of bleeping? I don’t make a big deal about it, as long as he doesn’t use those ‘rude’ words himself.
If I kept him from watching Stewart and Colbert he wouldn’t know anything about politics. (He calls Stephen Colbert the funniest man in America — totally unencouraged by me.)

I think the reason we all love hearing Stephen curse is because we very seldom get to hear it. If you watch this clip censored and then uncensored, you can tell that the uncensored version is way funnier. To me that proves that censorship strips the funny off the comedy. I actually don’t see a point to censorship, because even kids can tell what he’s saying.

In this particular case I’m not sure that’s true. It was made with so many swearwords precisely because it was never meant to air without bleeps. Some shows turn the censorship into an ingenious way to create better jokes around the bleeps. Arrested Development turned it into a fine art.

First of all, Arrested Development was the bomb. I loved that show, but I still disagree. I personally think shows are way funnier without censorship, and particularly in this clip I think it was way funnier uncensored.

Personally I like the bleeps. I’m the kind of person who just do not want to hear certain words. I don’t think the bleeps make anything less funny.
