Klassic Kolbert: “Do You Believe?”

By Ms Interpreted on May 19th, 2008 ·

I haven’t had much time to go through all of your enthusiastic comments lately (busy busy busy …), but I just noticed that Sadie07 mentioned one of my favorite of Stephen’s Daily Show-era segments in one of them: the 2002 “Do You Belive?” segment addressing the Salt Lake City figure skating scandal.

Here it is, for those of you who haven’t seen it — Do You Believe:

My only gripe about the otherwise wonderful hi-res version of this vid on the Daily Show’s site is that it cuts off what is, for me, one of the best parts of the segment: the glimpse of Jon cracking up and collapsing on his desk with laughter as they cut to commercial. I LOVE watching Jon just lose it like that; it makes me grin from ear to ear to see what Stephen is capable of reducing him to. By comparison — until it gets yanked, anyhow — here’s a lower quality version that includes the additional footage (sorry about the poor audio synch). What do you all think?

This is one of my favorite Stephen videos, and I love the DailyMotion version showing Jon at the end, even if you can’t see him very clearly. It also gives a better look at Stephen’s spin at the end, though it’s against the green screen.

Thanks, Ms I — this is great!

I’d never seen that before! LOL.

I agree, the DailyMotion version showing Jon is better. It’s always great to see either of them totally lose all composure.

Thanks so much for posting!

there is another Klassic Kolbert that I really liked where he incorporates his daughter into the sketch. The correspondent piece was called Tanks A Lot, I believe. it was about that one gas station owner who lowered prices at his station and got shut down by the oil companies.

once again, the official TDS clip cut off an important part, which was the ending credits, where his daughter breaks character and calls Stephen “Dad.” There is a version on Dailymotion somewhere that includes the ending credits though. that part, in my mind, makes the whole video.

I wonder whether you’re referring to this version I posted over there a while back … ?

I LOVE this clip, but it makes me sad that back then $2.19 was “record gas prices”.

Still, thanks for posting! She is SO adorable!

That is too cute for words. This should be played on Father’s Day. Thank you so much MsI.

Aww. That was so sweet. He’s got a cute daughter. I loved the cue card too. “I don’t know what that means Dad”. :-)

Cool! I hadn’t seen “Do You Believe” before, only excerpts in fanvids! I think it belongs in CU’s “Dancing with Stephen Colbert” course, don’t you? Along with all Stephen’s other spins. Thanks, Sadie! And I vote for the DailyMotion version. In addition to Jon’s reaction, it was fun to see the original footage in front of the greenscreen at the end as well. Great job, MsI!

Jon losing all sense of composure whenever Stephen is doing a bit is just the best. It’s almost like Jon is powerless to stop his adorable giggle, and Stephen knows it…and uses it that fact to his advantage.

you have no idea how happy I get when he does the Colbert spin.

I’m beside myself, if I’m using the term properly.

I have been looking for that clip forever – thank-you!

Also, the clip of Stephen and his daughter during the closing credits is just too adorable for words.

Thanks for the Dailymotion clip; I can’t ever get the CC videos to play, but DM’s work just fine.

“I’m flying, Jon! You can’t judge me now, I’m flying!”

My new phrase of the week, finally replacing (from Corner Gas),
“A daisy arch? You’ll never get me under one of those death traps.”
