Friday Free-for-all

Ok, kids, it’s Friday, and not only is it Friday, but it’s a Friday before a much-needed and well deserved break for Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert and crew.

So here’s my conversation starter for this week – I’d like to have a mini-contest, right here, right on this thread. I want to get feedback on the blog to make the site better and more enjoyable for each of you. I’d like for all of you to put your thinking caps on and make a Wish List of things you’d like to see on No Fact Zone. Now, please be realistic. While I’m sure we’d all love an exclusive interview with Stephen Colbert or something like that, I don’t see that happening any time soon. But think of changes that might make your experience here even more fun or meaningful, that would make a positive impact on the blog for yourself and your fellow Zoners.

Whoever comes up with the best idea that we can use on the blog to make a change for the better will get their choice of Colbert Goodies from a big pile I have going here at the loft. I’ve got a pile of magazines with Colbert on the cover (Rolling Stone, Wired, GQ, etc), as well as buttons, posters, and all kinds of fun stuff. If I pick your idea, I’ll let you choose which prize you’d like. If you want to get a prize, make sure you put your real e-mail address in the comment fields so I can contact you. Oh, and I’ll pick a winner on Sunday night.

This may already be floating about here somewhere and I’m just being my normal unobservant self by not noticing it, but I’d enjoy having a masterlist of sorts for the tags on posts. The categories there just to the right get a number of them, but I think it’d be convenient to, if not have a list of them on the main page (which I’d imagine would create a lot of clutter), then have a link somewhere to a page with a list of all the tags. Maybe I’m just a crazy tag fiend, but I love to go to blogs and pick a random tag and surf around.

On a completely different note: OMG DID YOU GUYS SEE THE VERY VERY END OF THE OFFICE TONIGHT? I’M SO HAPPY!

(Also, love the eye candy. *saves*)

    • Avert your eyes Lisa because I’m going to talk about “The Office”. :-)

Bowlofpetunias, I really enjoyed last night’s season finale, especially the storylines surrounding Kevin and Phyllis. It was too funny when Angela accepted the proposal the way she did althought I was very upset by that turn of events (until the very last minute of the show of course). It was great to see Ryan go down the way he did.

Poor Michael Scott. He finds someone who just might be the right person for him and he goes back to Jan instead because he wants to be a father so badly.

Kelly was funny when she was talking about visiting Ryan in prison.

I love Ed Helms but I have never liked the Andy character. I know we are not supposed to like him but I don’t see the need for that character on the show.

I am going to miss “The Office” during the hiatus!

I got so upset when Andy proposed! I wanted to throw my tv remote. Because Angela was just like “uh okay.” And who doesn’t want Jim and Pam to be happy? And he ruined it! GAH!!!

When I told DH, who didn’t watch the end of the show, even *he* was shocked. He thought they would only be making out.

Phyllis has no reason to be discrete after the way Angela acted about the success of Phyllis’ party planning.

Michael’s eyes flashing at the mention of the word “orgy” was remarkable. Steve Carell demonstrated true acting skill in that moment.

Somehow Dunder-Mifflin Scranton managed to have an outstanding and well-organized party that still left almost everyone unhappy. It’s a real credit to the writers of The Office to have made that premise work.

That was one of the best episodes of The Office I have ever seen. The writers over there really know how to end a season!

My heart broke for Michael though. It’s so sad to see him give up the potential to be truly happy because it’s the only way he thinks he can become a “dad.” And to think, I was rooting for Jan and Michael in the beginning…

Did you see the very, very, very end? The ~20 second clip that NBC airs during the credits, before ER comes on? I understand that a lot of the time somehow that gets cut off. But I’m pretty sure that they get put up on the NBC site. So if you didn’t see that… I suggest you look into it re: Andy. (of course, you may have seen it and are saying you hate Andy for a totally different reason than what I’m thinking, I dunno.)

this sure does get started early, its not even-quite friday yet where I am.

I think some slideshow-rotating backgrounds or pictures would be funny/interesting to dig up some memories. something kind of the randomizer on the tds site (which im sure everyone has found out isnt truly that random); I usually click that a few times, and have happened upon some nice gems from way-back whenever. Once I got the viking-helmeted-squealing Stephen clip, which is hilarious (which now I’ve the video id on work computer, which sucks since they now cut off embed cc vids too).

I dont have many chances to do it, but it is so much fun to make an *behind* out of yourself for comedy’s sake.

It’s a clip from Ellen. When he was on her show he groped her when they were dancing together. This video is from the next day when Ellen DeGeneres was explaining the whole incident.

Speaking of Ellen, I would love to see her on TCR. I think she and Stephen would be very funny together.

      • Ha! That was hilarious! Thanks for sharing.

I’d love to see Ellen and Stephen together. They might have to devote the whole show to her, though — there are so many possibilities. She could be a proposed co-anchor for Stephen, perhaps, and he could be fighting with her the whole time.

  5. How about either using Disqus/Seesmic for comments, or opening a forum? Obviously, I’m familiar with the ColbertNation.com forums, etc. But, I’ve found that regular ol’ WordPress commenting tends to get a bit confusing when lots of people comment on one post and start trying to reference one another. Really, this blog is for all of the fans, so why not try to encourage more commenting and interaction between readers? :)

Hmmm…I’m not sure if it’s humanly possible to make it more fun to hang out here.

The only thing that comes to mind is considering we all tend to post a lot of links to stories, or videos, or random little tidbits from the Internets in Blog comments, maybe a little nook of the site where we can link away to stuff like that and convene might be fun. I think the Friday Free-For-Alls are definitely a cool place to do that kind of stuff, but if you’re considering adding something, that’s the only thing that comes to mind.

Like a Friday Free-for-all News Edition? That could be useful. A place to discuss the news and media and random bits and pieces of the internets without clogging the regular FFFA thread or infecting non-news junkies with our disease. :p I do find myself wanting to go on about MSNBC After Hours, or Bush’s golf comments, but not, as actually getting into politics has the unfortunate tendency of getting to peoples’ bad sides. But if we set some rules for it, I think it could work.

(sorry, I’m totally bouncing all over this thread tonight. I’m bored and not at all tired even though it’s nearly 2:30.)

        @bowlofpetunias:

About Bush — I’m sure some wag has already said this, but Junior felt the urge to turn Daddy’s Gulf War into a Golf War, huh? I wonder if it has to do with “family aggravation and resentment” surfacing after Jenna’s wedding last week?

I don’t want to wade through the news articles so I may be repeating a list of refutations to Bush’s comment, but I come up with:

–Woodrow Wilson played golf during WWI
–Franklin D. Roosevelt played golf before being stricken with polio; during WWII he spent time at golfing resorts and the like; he surely would have continued to play golf had he been able
–Eisenhower played golf during the Korean War
–Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford played golf during the Vietnam War
–Bush Sr. played during the Gulf War

So now W. is going to rewrite the book of Presidential Etiquette? :D

DH (golfs 2x/week) opined that W. was probably so poor a golfer that his companions couldn’t play badly enough to let him win.

      I’m figuring since this a Friday Free-For-All that it’s okay to meander a little…

CC Insider has posted Steve Carell’s appearance on Conan the other night (here)

  7. bowlofpetunias says:

Hmm, these spoiler fears could be another thing. I’ve seen a few sites that have a spoiler tag for use in posts, that make separate boxes with text that has to be highlighted in order to be read. That may be difficult to achieve in these little comment boxes, but we could get the same effect if we were able to change the font color to white.

Could be applicable not only to Office, but in the many times we get scoops like the Clinton appearance. In that instance, for example, I was willing to read a spoiler in the main post about the appearance itself, but didn’t want to risk reading details about it or the appearances of Edwards and Obama. So the comments section where I normally would have flailed about it became oh so tempting, but was something to be avoided.

(Though as with the other thing I mentioned, we may already be able to do this and I’m just not aware of it. … Hey, that’s another thing. If there were a link in the comment box to a dialog that showed which html was allowed, I think that’d be useful.)

what will be really cool is some kind of “colbert tracking,” like if stephen is in new york, taping the show, then he will appear on a map, in new york, but if he’s on a move to do a bit or to give a speech in some other cities or states, it would be very cool to see a dot on a map of where he is presently located. i know this sounds hard to do, but i think it’s nice to have that for fans to know where they can have their colbert sighting. it can just be a little map that shows where stephen is or where he’s going to be, even though, it might not be completely accurate or known, but it’s comforting for fans, in my opinion.

Sounds like you’re fusing the fandom practices of Rain with the website-style of that guy Stephen had on last week (forgive me for forgetting his name…the one who defies the invasion of privacy by just putting it all out there).

No, it actually doesn’t sound too stalkerish. Sounds similar to Stephen’s tracking of Stephen Jr.:)

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  10. Heath says:

This could just be me not paying enough attention, but I’ll throw this out there anyway. I love the weekly things where we see who the guests are and what they are known for. I’d love it if we could also see either updates on guests who are really interesting and/or popular (and not just the updates that mention the Report or Stephen).

Also, discussions of some of the issues that the show talks about from time to time would be great. I know that sort of thing can get unwieldy, but it would be lovely to have those sorts of discussions with other Colbert fans.

Finally… and this one might be way out there. A book club sort of situation could be cool. We could read books featured on the Report and discuss them. I know that there are quite a lot of books on the show, but it could be cool to have these group reads for people who want to participate.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • ColbertGirl27 says:

You could actually fuse the discussion of issues with the book club since any book will serve as a springboard to discussing issues.

Although a little apprehensive about having open discussions about various issues and what friction it could cause, I’ve been constantly impressed by the respectful, thoughtful, friendly and good-natured posts on this board and I believe, unlike many boards, we could have great discussions on a wide range of issues without it becoming a shouting match.

In fact, one the main points of TCR is that a shouting match never leads to a worthwhile discussion…though it does lead to great comedy:)

However, these ideas may stray a little too much from Stephen Colbert. I guess that would be DB’s call.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  11. I don’t know if this has been suggested already as I’m a little too sleep to pay attention, but what about a message board/discussion forum? As far as I know there’s not one out there for Stephen’s fans and I’ve always found them to be quite fun in the past. Maybe you could add one to the site?

Btw, speaking of Stephen: did anyone else think the 14/5 show was brutally bad?! Laura Dern gave Stephen nothing to work with! Nothing at all! And Grover was super boring. The only truly great moment for me in that show was the puppet bit at the beginning! :(

I wouldn’t like to see a messageboard-like setup here. This is a blog, and the focus should be on the original posts. If people want more of a community, there of course is the official Colbert Nation messageboard, the colboard, and if they want a more fangirl-centric messageboard there’s OSCLA.

Frankly I can’t think of any improvements to this place, this site is as good as it can possibly get. Except maybe one tiny thing–the search function is really unwieldy, at least last time I checked it was. That’s one of the best things about this site, the ability to remember part of a long-ago episode and then find the clip over at Comedy Central or in my iTunes stash that I want to see again. If we could use the more sophisticated search logic of Google, for example, it would make doing that easier.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  14. First of all, I have to say what a week of amazing shows!!! That audience last night was all kinds of crazy. I LOVED to see that. I know that this is a well deserved break but how will we make it next week without new shows? **sad***

There are so many things you all already do so well. Here are a few of my favorites: episode guides, the weekly guides about upcoming guests, Eye Candy, and the fact that you keep us so well updated with all the breaking news of the day. I truly don’t know how you do it.

On slow news days, I would enjoy threads highlighting Stephen’s field pieces from TDS and TCR. Those NEVER get old and many of us are fairly new to the fandom and haven’t seen all of Stephen’s work yet. We could also do threads about things like favorite quotes from TCR, SWC, Exit 57, IIAAASCY, Wigfield, etc. or something fangirlish and silly like our favorite Stephen ties.

I would like to see this blog continue to stay focused on all things Stephen, TCR, and six degree of separation related. I don’t want to see NFZ stray from it’s original intent. While I enjoy open, honest discussion about issues and stories highlighted on the show, I would be unhappy to see too much of this and not enough about Stephen and his work. I enjoy this community because is a positive and healthy environment. If we venture off the path, I am afraid things might become negative or that things would become more about the readers than our fearless leader. Just my two cents though, not trying to start any negativity. :-)

I’m glad we have these Friday-Free-For-All threads to come to during the week. Thanks for the forum.

    • On the way to work, I thought of an idea that might be fun. When the show goes on a break, NFZ could highlight an old episode each night (Monday-Thursday), beginning with the first episode of TCR. We could use the original episode guides but I’m sure the video links would need to be updated because of the great new TCR web site CC has given us.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • somuch2kno says:

I LOVE this idea! One of the things I hate about when they go on break (besides the fact that they’ve gone on break, well-deserved as it may be) is that we usually get “treated” to a repeat of a recent episode. I would much rather get a week of episodes from the early days, or even theme weeks like they did during the (much-reviled) writers strike.

It sounds like a lot of work for the NFZ staff but if we could somehow take the opportunity during breaks to begin from the glorious beginning and revisit those episodes as if they were new, i.e., provide guest information, links to segment clips on CC, etc., that could be amazing! It would also be fun to use that as an opportunity to do a follow-up, sort of a where-are-they-now, on issues, guests, topics and books from 2 -1/2 years ago.

Great idea! One small hiccup though is that unlike the Daily Show website, there’s no nifty slider bar thingy that lets you go back to a specific date in time to find a particular episode. With the TCR site, they only have a search bar. I’ve tried putting in a date as a search term once and i got all the videos from that particular day, but i’m not sure if that’s something that works consistently.

I knew having Leary on was going to make things lively, but last night was soooo wonderful. Feeling the depth of their friendship and the ease with which (in which? – someone help me here) they interacted and usurped each other almost felt like I was eavesdropping on a private hang they were having. Made me miss seeing Jon and Stephen together regularly. *Sigh*

I would love a few more tag listings under Categories-Colbert Report.

Faves such as Time 100, Eye Candy, FCLWeekly, Bill O’Reilly (although I hate giving Bill-O anything)…

And a listing for Jon Stewart (in addition to The Daily Show) under Six Degrees, please?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Ms Interpreted says:

This isn’t directly on point with what you’re requesting, but since you mentioned tags, this seemed as good a place as any to mention it.

One of the shortfalls of relying the tags as they currently exist on the site is that we didn’t have the ability to tag posts prior to the site revamp that took place a while back, so older posts are almost entirely lacking in tags (unless one of the other mods has been going back and adding them … which I know I haven’t done). For this reason, anyway, I know I generally rely more on the search function — even though I know it’s not perfect — if I’m looking for older posts on a given subject.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • DB says:

And even for when the tags work, they are unfortunately somewhat unreliable. So I agree, searching is a much better way to go. I do like the idea of incorporating Google search functionality, as Eris suggested, so I’m going to look into that most definitely.

  23. AmandaIvy says:

I know we used to have it, but I wish we had the edit-your-comments feature back somehow. I know the old version was a little unruly, but I really appreciated it because I don’t pay attention when I type and typos often ensue.

And as vigwig said, fun and games are always welcome. Tournament-gate was disappointing, but I think we learned our lessons with that and I think a note at the top of the post about it would suffice.

And I love the eye candy. *Saves*

I’ll see if I can get the Ajax editor to work. It was slowing the site down a bit when I was on a shared server, but now that Draknet has set us up on a VPS (*I LOVE YOU JEN!!!!*), I bet the site can handle quite a few bells and whistles it didn’t before. I’ll go look at that right now!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • I definitely used the edit function when we had it. I cringe when I go back and read comments I’ve left and I discover typos. One day I left the comment that TDS and TCR compliment each other. I meant that they complement each other. I was so embarrassed when I saw the typo.

  24. Ms Interpreted says:

Hmmmmm … one thing I know I kind of miss from the old site template is that calendar in the sidebar, where you could hover your mouse over the date and it would show all the posts for that day. That was helpful when I was looking for something that I know was posted during a certain general time period, but when I couldn’t necessarily recall keywords with which to search.

I’m not sure whether it’s possible to use that sort of feature with the current layout (and it might add to “clutter” on the sidebar), but I do sometimes miss that.

    • Lisa says:

I was going to mention something similar — I really liked the “Recent Posts” link that used to be on the main menu bar. It was great because it would include something like 8 or 9 old posts you could link to directly, rather than having to keep clicking on link at the top to go back and find a post that I wanted to include in an e-mail or reread some of the comments about it. The RSS feed is a great feature for that, but it only lists 5 posts (unless that’s just my RSS reader that I have to tweak…I’m not quite sure). I didn’t mention it because I wasn’t sure (like Ms. I mentioned) if adding it back would cause to much e-clutter.

Okay, I have something… let’s take a cue from the Time 100 and come up with our own list:

The TCR 100 Most Influential Moments on The Colbert Report (i.e. our favorite things ever)

It’s kind of like the Videos bracket vote, except instead of tournament elimination, we end up with a Top 100. Everyone can nominate their own top ten moments, or vote for nominees. It could be divided into the TCR 100 of 2006, 2007, 2008, etc. or just an overall top 100.

The TCR [yes, THE The Colbert Report] 100. It’s a competition no one actually wins — except America, of course.

    • Flatpoint Grief Counselor says:

      Sub-Idea:

Instead of the TCR 100 it could just be the overall Colbert 100 Most Influential Moments.

Is anybody else getting sick of the Presidential Race? I can hardly watch TCR anymore, I really hope they change the show up a little more, I’m tired of hearing about McCain, Hilary, and Obama. I just don’t care anymore. There has to be other stuff in the news to make fun of. I almost wish it could go back to the way it was during the Writers Strike, the show was flipping hilarious then.

I even think Colbert is getting sick of it as well or it seemed like it last night after a comment he made.

And i understand that its supposed to be satire on the news so they obviously have to follow the news…but I dunno I’d prefer more of the funny segments, Like Cheating Death ect…

I just hope they change it up, cause I just don’t find the material that funny recently.

The Episode making fun of Bill and the Interview with the chick who wrote the Titanic book, now that was a great episode.

In my opinion, they’ve been doing pretty well about not covering the race too much. I’m sure they’re probably more sick of it than everyone else because they have to keep up with it at least somewhat. The rest of us can just tune it out as best we can.

As a whole, it seems to me that they’re purposefully trying to avoid it already. Last night’s episode was kind of an exception because of the news of Edwards endorsing Obama. You can’t just pretend like it didn’t happen, when you’re essentially parodying pundits who are all over it.

This may be a little long winded, so I apologize in advance, but I’d like to try to be clear. It seems to me – and I could very well be wrong – that there’s no way to sign in while one is already reading comments, and therefore be able to comment, without then being taken back to the homepage, as opposed to the comment area one was in when one felt moved to comment (I know I’ve just outed myself as a lurker, but I wear the “L” proudly). Is that something that can be revised.

If I haven’t been clear, let me know and I’ll take another whack at it. Unless, of course, I’m the only one frustrated by this, in which case I’ll pipe down.

One idea: A section where we could recall the first time we saw TCR and how we fell in love with the show and/or Stephen himself. I’M NOT SUGGESTING A MESSAGEBOARD. Each person would just share their story. Period. No responses (except possibly in the Free-For-All). Think of it more as a list of testimonials kept short and sweet.

I thought this would be a nice demonstration as to how much we love Stephen and could simultaneously serve as a nice introduction for those visiting the No Fact Zone for the first time. Sort of a “we love Stephen as much as you do” intro to new members.

May I just say, however, that I think DB, Jen and the staff here already go above and beyond the call of duty! Thank you!

First, I should say that NFZ is my lifeline. I am currently studying abroad, and thus cannot watch the Report, so the episode guides keep me in touch. Six Degrees and the other features keep me up to date in ways just reading a newspaper can’t, and I really appreciate that. And ever since Jen worked her magic and NFZ has its own server, I can actually watch clips from the show (I can’t access the videos on the Comedy Central sites, only this one).
The reason I don’t frequent the colboard anymore is that it became irrelevant to me in my Colbert-deprived state. So please don’t go the message board route; we have a couple of those already and I ignore them for a reason. As long as you keep me tuned in to the Nation and its satellites, I’m happy – you really don’t need to bog down the blog with additional features.
The only thing I would suggest – and I admit, this is purely selfish – rather than linking to videos on the Comedy Central sites (that I have no access to), could you perhaps embed the videos on a separate NFZ page you could link to? I’m envisioning a sort of rotation, where a clip could be featured on the NFZ video page for maybe a week, and then removed so as to not slow the site down too much. For instance, clips from a Monday show would be taken down the following Monday, when you would add the new batch. I’m not saying to put the entire show there, but maybe just the interview and any other “favorite” or particularly amazing bits (like the ones you typically post anyway).
Just my two cents! But you’re already amazing.

We should totally play mafia. And I’m not just saying that because I flove that game and have been sadly deprived of playing it in years. It’s wicked fun. We can even change it so that instead of ourselves we’re playing people related to TDS/TCR. (more fun and overcomes the problem of not really having clues to work with.) It may need some reworking to be able to be done on a blog rather than a message board, but we’re clever, we can think of something.

If you’ve no idea what I’m talking about, you can read about it on wikipedia here.

And there’s not an individual winner, so another bracketgate shouldn’t be a problem. Just a triumph of good over evil. :p

maybe I’m just not noticing or not commenting enough but is there a comment notification feature? It would especially be helpful with the the feature of replying directly to comments so that you can know if someone responded without coming back to the comment section to check. It would also be neat if there was the ability to check or uncheck the option like message boards sometimes have.
