Props to Broadcasting & Cable‘s John Eggerton for noticing the reference to The Colbert Report in John Edwards’ endorsement of Barack Obama earlier this evening.
From Broadcasting & Cable:
Edwards Endorses Obama, Even Without Jet Ski
May 14, 2008The power of the Colbert Nation was on display at the Michigan announcement by John Edwards that he was endorsing Barack Obama.
Last week it was an astronaut sporting a Colbert Nation wrist bracelet, today it was center stage at one of the most important endorsements for either presidential candidate.
Almost the first words out of the former presidential candidate’s mouth were a reference to Edwards’ appearance on The Colbert Report last month, Comedy Central’s Peabody-winning send-up of cable news punditry.
“You know, I was promised a jet ski,” he told a cheering throng of thousands in Michigan, Barack Obama at his side, “and I haven’t gotten it yet.”
. . .
Nicely done, Sen. Edwards!

Ah, I love both these men and was thrilled to hear this news (Stephen actually got to cover some breaking news tonight!) so had to go look for the clip – here’s one of the many on YouTube:

John makes the remark around 3:19, after entering to Bruce Springsteen’s “The Rising.” Looks like good times.

Thanks for the video link WordsWithGrace. I saw Edwards’ speech last night and was pleasantly surprised to hear his remark about the jet skis. What a great guy! I have been in love with him ever since he presented EdW0RDS. It’s even more special to me since I was in the audience that night in Philly.
Like you, I didn’t expect Stephen to cover this on last night’s show because the news broke right before taping time.

Must gush. (Briefly. I’m on the clock at work.)
This rally was in my hometown and I was there!
After the jetski comment I looked at people next to me in excitement, forgetting that not everyone is a Colbert national. Got a few puzzled looks.
Dang, that was exciiiiiiiiting!!! With excessive exclamation points!

That must’ve been a really cool night!

Loved the jetski comment. If only he endorsed Obama earlier, when it counted.

I let out a very loud “HA!” when I heard him say this… and all joking aside, it was a great speach too. Dare we say ‘Obama/Edwards’?
(reCAPTHA Pentagon much…)

It would be nice in many respects, but John Edwards has said repeatedly that he’s not interested in being Vice President (or going through another Vice Presidental campaign).
I read one post somewhere musing that he’d make an interesting Supreme Court nominee if there were a vacancy, but it seemed like idle speculation rather than an actual suggestion. More often (although I don’t know how solid these are, either), I’ve heard rumors that he might be interested in becoming Attorney General.

I heard the Attorney General thing too, that either Clinton or Obama should they win the White House should nominate him for that.

Edwards has now reconfirmed that he’s not interested in the VP slot, but it does sound like the AG position wouldn’t be out of the question,

I loved it that they covered John Edwards’ jet ski remark on last night’s show. The graphic they used was way too funny!
