The Envelope (LA Times entertainment blog) is reporting that the Emmy Consideration package from Comedy Central this year contains videos for The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil, The Sarah Silverman Program, Mind of Mencia, Reno 911! and the channel’s recent concert special underscoring autism education, Night of Too Many Stars.
You know what that means, kids. First of all, I have this deep fear that Ringo Starr: Off The Record will have all the Colbert fans sweating throughout the Emmy nominating process. Secondly, everyone needs to start watching eBay because I can guarantee these DVD editions are going to start showing up there soon. Happy Hunting!

They really do deserve an Emmy and I’ll be totally miffed if they get snubbed again. I’m not a huge fan of t.v. in general, but I watch TCR practically religiously.

Not a huge fan of TV in general either, but I’ve watched and…ahem…recorded every TCR episode since the beginning of this year (on antiquated VCR tapes). If they don’t win this year, I’ll assume the show is rigged.

I have found there is not a large cross-section of TCR fans and Mind of Mencia fans, at least online. I too am not in that cross-section. Ergh.

I just have to chime in here and point out that Mencia said some very insulting and upsetting things about the people of New Orleans after Katrina — like, weeks afterward. What he said made me literally sick, and I swore I’d never watch him again. I’m surprised he’s still on… I don’t like hate comedy in the first place.

I do enjoy Mind of Mencia but I’m not sure it’s not as Emmy worthy as TCR or TDS.

You and I are totally on the same wave length; I’ve been recording them too on my trusty dusty VCR too that my husband wanted to get rid of (Never!). Unfortunately, I missed this past week of shows…stupid tapes aren’t long enough!

Hmmm. I wonder what episodes they’ll be using. I doubt they’ll use any from the writer’s strike, although I have fond memories of the “National Treasure” series, and the amazing Andrew Young interview, etc.
I have to say- I’ll be incredibly upset if The Colbert Report doesn’t win this year. They make most things look so effortless (like The Word, Rain’s appearance, and Formidable Opponent, to name just a few) when really they must be pretty difficult.

According to ebay, one of the episodes submitted is the last episode before the 2007 WGA strike (where the interviewed guest was Walter Kirn. And the other episode was the ep. where Ron Paul was on. I have no personal memory of the latter episode.

If you just search “Jun 13, 2007″ on the TCR site you can watch the clips from the Ron Paul ep. A particularly strong episode, in my opinion.

The show with Walter Kirn as guest (11-1-07) was the one where he got the news by phone from the SC Democratic Party that he was not going to be on the ballot, so it was dramatic. It also includes a lot of other segments about his presidential campaign–showing him speaking in South Carolina, his campaign to raise money for schools thru DonorsChoose, etc., so it really highlights the show’s biggest step into the wider world so far. That was a good choice.

It’s a toss-up on whether or not TCR can get Best Variety Program, because both Conan and TDS are hard to beat(and TDS has won that category for the last five years in a row). But Stephen better darn well win Best Individual Performance! If nothing else, then TCR should win for Best Writing. Still, I’m not willing to make any real preidictions. Anything goes!
I’m loyal to both Jon and Stephen to the day I merge with the infinite, and a part of me is torn to see them pitted against each other for the Emmys all the time.Like I’ve said in the past: Gun to my head, I’d rather die than choose between them.
All said and done, this really has been the year of Colbert. TDS is still a powerful force of pure talent, but people have finally woken up to the fact that TCR has grown up to be TDS’ equal.
