Tivo Alert: Klassic Kolbert! Watch Stephen Colbert on ‘Whose Line Is it Anyway?’

Set your TiVo NOW! Stephen has been on ‘Whose Line Is it Anyway?’ a few times, and tonight ABC Family will be running one of his episodes, at 1:00 AM EST on Saturday night/Sunday morning. This episode features a few classics that until now you may have only seen on YouTube. Here’s an episode summary of Show 116 which will be showing tonight, courtesy of TV.com:

Stephen hosts “Weird Newscasters,” with Colin doing baby talk, Wayne as Bill Cosby, and Ryan as someone in love with the camera; all four do a “Scene To Rap” set in an avalanche; Colin and Ryan are Navy SEALs getting ready to blow up a boat in “Moving People”; Wayne and Colin take on Ryan and Stephen in “Props”; “Songs of the Pro Bowler”; Stephen hosts “Party Quirks,” with Wayne as the world’s longest touchdown celebration, Colin as a lobster trying to talk his way out of being boiled, and Ryan as footage of crash test dummies.

Stephen wins, so the rest bite the hand that feeds them in the television “Hoedown.”

And in case you haven’t seen this, here is another sketch from a different epsiode of WLIIA, which has always been my favorite of Stephen’s sketches on the show.

Thanks to Tina Tamer for the tip!

I love Stephen’s Avalanche Rap… and the German Film dub is one of the best bits ever from WLIIA – all 4 of them are at their best in that one.

ahhh what a good one. I have that rap on my iPod. German film dub is one of my favorites! I was telling a friend about it yesterday.

God, I miss this show… *sniffle*

Love seeing this again, the onsensical ‘German’ always makes me laugh. His eyebrow starts to arch when he uses the Nazi slogan! And the sweet smile when he says ‘this is bad’; love it!
I don’t know why this show had to go away.

I love this show!!! Especially being a theatre student, we do most of these improv games in class and on our own and in improv shows, etc.

I’ll definitely be watching this! (I don’t have TiVo, unfortunately.)

Oh definitely. One of my prof’s favorite phrases is “Work hard, play harder.” So naturally a lot of class time is spent playing improv games.

But that’s not at all uncommon at my school. Frisbees and hacky sacks abound (I’ll never forget walking through campus my first week there and seeing a guy with dreads playing hacky sack in a kilt, and no one gave him or his friends a second glance.)

Oh my gosh! I’ve seen this clip so many times, but I just noticed something that made me almost die laughing.

After Ryan goes through that whole long monologue that ends with “Kiss me…”, right before Wayne starts talking Stephen flickers is tongue all seductively! The camera angle doesn’t make it apparent, but I still can’t believe I just noticed it.

    • TruthPower says:

I’ve seen these alot on YouTube but have never noticed the seductive tongue until now. Stephen’s a clown isn’t he. He never ceases to make me smile :-)

I watched this show a long time ago, but it was before I knew about Stephen, so I might’ve seen an episode with him without even realizing it. What’s odd is that I never put two and two together; it never occurred to me that an improv master like Stephen would be on an improv show like Whose Line.

Anyone regular watchers know how frequently Stephen came on? I remember the 4th person was usually that Chip guy but it frequently changed.

I’m pretty sure that there were only two episodes with Stephen. One of them was only aired as part of ABC family’s clearing of the Whose Line vault thingy they did a couple years ago, in which they put a bunch of unused games from previous tapings and called them new episodes.

And I distinctly remember several years back, watching a rerun on that channel, hearing Drew announce some guy named Stephen and thinking to myself, “who the heck is that?” Oh how times change. (And in the credits I read his surname ‘Colbert’ and thought “that’s not what he said!”)

Hehe, the recaptcha is ‘sharpless craft.’ Nice description of the show, I think.

      • Jennie says:

Yes, he’s only on 2 episodes (both from the same taping).

The first appearance was season 1 episode 17 (Production number 116).

The second appearance was season 8 episode 13. (This was when there was no new taping, but they were compiling unaired footage into new episodes, as B.of.P. mentions.)

        • AmandaIvy says:

I wish they’d play the unaired footage they compiled into an episode (the one that the above video came from, I’m assuming). I caught tonight’s episode, and it was almost weird seeing it on the television screen as opposed to on the computer screen.

I remember watching Who’s Line back when this aired, but I don’t remember this specific episode… then again, I was nine years old at the time. Lol.

      @ mrtigger001,

The other alternate regulars were Brad Sherwood, Greg Proops (who was also on the British version of the show), and as you mentioned, Chip (who was in a few episodes of The Office during Season 3).

I actually got to see Brad and Colin do a touring improv show that came to a town near me — I would love to see Amy, Stephen, and Paul do something like that.

  8. The reason I got on here was to prove my girlfriend wrong about Steve Colbert being on WLIIA. She swore he wasn’t …??? However I seem to remember Steve Colbert being on WLIIA quite a few more times than 2 or 3. Who knows though I may have been watching re-runs of the same shows as I channel surfed?? ANY one know for sure how many times Steve was on WLIIA? By the way steve colberts sarcastic style is top notch comedy in my eyes! He should do an hour comedy special for sure! AHHH He’d definetely be a good Roaster wouldnt he Comedy Central????????

    • Jennie says:

He was on twice – believe me, I have copies of every WLIIA ever aired and used to haunt the WLIIA fan sites – and these fans are rabid bookkeepers.

As I said in my comment above:

Yes, he’s only on 2 episodes (both from the same taping).

The first appearance was season 1 episode 17 (Production number 116).

The second appearance was season 8 episode 13. (This was when there was no new taping, but they were compiling unaired footage into new episodes, as B.of.P. mentions.)

what is one of his phrases??? plzzz tell me

  10. Sue says:

I just watched Season 8, Episode 9 and colbert was on that one, so either it was labelled wrong, the person above was incorrect (whether in saying that he was only in 2 episodes or that the episode in Season 8 was 13).
