Porking

This picture made me laugh, so here you go kids. You know what to do.

Here’s a good starter question: What was your favorite moment of the week? Mine is definitely the astronaut laugh.

So many favorite moments. But I especially loved the “Stephen” vs Stephen meta in the closing segment of Thursday’s episode. “Where does that Stephen end and this Stephen begin?” Bwah!

Apparently they’ve put up an uncensored version (and by uncensored, I mean the one naughty word Stephen said isn’t bleeped anymore) of the R.E.M. interview over here. I know it’s a family friendly blog, but I do enjoy some cursing, I must say.

Lol, I don’t know if it does this with anyone else, but when he says the “bad word”, the audio goes all funny. Like, it only comes out of one speaker.

I like how they were like “R.E.M. Uncensored!” like it was some big deal.

It does that for me too. It’s almost like they literally cut it out of the video entirely, but kept it somewhere nice and safe to be snuck back in at a later time.

I can’t choose between Stephen’s mournful ‘rain..’ at the end of the dance off, the wriststrong spin in space or Stephen and George Johnson repeatedly electrocuting themselves. It’s been a really great week.

I agree. I’m having a difficult time choosing between those three things. I am going to go with the WristStrong spin because that interview was such a big deal for Stephen and the Nation. Stephen’s voice has been heard out in space now. OMG! Space!

I was at the taping that that picture is from! It was the day Stephen fell and broke his wrist. Before the show he told a story that his daughter wanted to give him some material for the show, so she told him how it was International Surf Day. So in the opening Stephen did that hang loose hand gesture. Then before the taping Stephen said something like he would let his daughter watch the show for his little shout out to her, but he would have to not let her watch The Word because it was a dirty one. So there’s Stephen giving the shout out to his daughter basically telling her to go to bed. lol.

Okay, end of story time, I just got excited when I saw that picture.

I’d say that one of my favorite things from this week was when Stephen joked “here’s an experiment: let’s see how long two grown men will keep touching something that hurts them” right before he got a bad shock and started cursing. Haha.

There were so many great moments this week. I think I have to go with the electrical shock, the astronaut chat a close second. Just the fact that he was kinda asking for something horrible to happen the more times he touched it. All I could think about after that was a bit from Futurama:

Leela: No!
[reaches into fire]
Leela: Ow! Fire hot!
Professor: The professy will help.
[reaches into fire]
Professor: Ahh! Fire indeed hot!

Juan added so much to the Rain/Colbert dance off. I love it when they add touches like that to TCR segments.

Yeah, I did love the sprinkler rain and Stephen’s “You did that on purpose!”

7

This whole week was great.

I’m going to say the astronaut interview was my favorite just because the sheer joy they both exuded was totally infectious. The overbearingly adorable look on Stephen’s face when he spun the WristStrong bracelet around won me over.

Then I’d say the dance off, … and the LSD trip was pretty funny, I’m not gonna lie.

Reply

I’m going to have to go with the astronaut interview for several reasons.
1. They were both adorable.
2. I’ve never heard Stephen say “Awesome” so many times in such a short time span.
3. Garrett’s silent laughter was hilarious!

But this was way to hard a week to really pick just one thing.

Reply

9

There were a lot of great moments, but I have to go with the astronaut interview, because it was so interesting, and they were both enjoying it so much. And I loved Stephen’s laugh.

My second favorite of the week was the electric shock experiment and Stephen’s comment about seeing how long two grown men would keep touching something that hurts them, just before he got a good jolt.

I also think that the interview with Arianna Huffington tonight is worth honorable mention. They’re well suited to each other, the pace was fast, and they appeared to be having a very good time.

(ReCaptcha words: avoid adulation. Hah!)

And, well, I can’t leave out the dance-off with Rain. It was fun to see Rain, and Stephen’s dancing is always great. I also loved the red pants.

I’ll stop now. :)

Rain dance. Any segment that makes Colbert be in a “skit” AND dance too? Too bad Rain’s story arc is over.

I like how Colbert finished strong with the Iraq viagra joke and the subsequent pulling out euphemism. It made me LORL (laugh out REALLY loud). :)

The Free-for-all thread is what everyone makes it. People can talk about any topic they want. My question was just a starting point to get the ball rolling.

I picked the question because, in all honesty, I like to talk about TCR. It’s most definitely a preferred topic of discussion, on this site and in life in general.

This is definitely still an open topic thread, though. Topic away!

The LSD trip was meta-wonderful and completely unexpected. Just like Jon said once, when you’re 42 it’s hard to find things that tickle you — but I fell out laughing at Stephen’s ‘trip’ last night. Genius.

That and the “OMG! Space!” caption.

Reply

15

Hmmm, definitely a tough one. I’d say it’s a tie between:

(1) Stephen’s reaction to the spinning of the WristSTRONG bracelet (the silent cheer is so adorable);

(2) the character-break when Stephen gets shocked (that had me giggling all the next day).

okay, new topic:

I have not seen any indication that Stewart and Colbert will be covering the election together — i.e. separate (but equal?) TDS and TCR shows.

Therefore, I would like to put pressure on Comedy Central to combine forces for Indecision 08 and have them do a show together. Instead of half-hour separate shows, one hour together. Like it used to be! Not that they aren’t great on their own, but there is no substitute for Stewart and Colbert at the same desk… especially when Colbert is wearing pajama pants and typing at a laptop that isn’t turned on. You can’t beat that with a stick.

Who’s with me? Huhzah!

That would be so incredibly awesome! The Midterm Mid-tacular was great, and to have them do it for two weeks (once for the DNC and one for the RNC) would be a dream come true.

I love them separately, but together they’re golden.

My gripe about this is that it means the combined live audience size for the two shows is smaller, unless they taped in some bigger, temporary space. I was at The Colbert Report for the live broadcast Midterm Mid-tacular and loved it, so I’d hate to think that if they taped it all at the Daily Show’s studios (which I’d assume they would, since it’s bigger), there are about 110 people who otherwise have gotten tickets to TCR that night who would simply miss out.

During the 2000 race, after a debate between Gore and Bush, there were “focus audiences” watching the debate which then offered their take on who had won. A woman from the Boston audience opined that when Gore spoke, he used too many facts and percentages to make his point, and she found it confusing. She much preferred Bush, “who didn’t use numbers” in describing his policies.

I’m glad Hillary is being so open about what she really thinks of the electorate and how she hopes to get to the White House. If the Democratic primary race wasn’t so close, we might not have known how unattractive her more deeply held attitudes are. Elitism, indeed.

I asked a question in a thread earlier this week about whether or not to watch SWC tv series or movie first and the consensus was tv series. Thanks for the rapid and nearly unanimous input!

Now, I find that Netflix only has season 3 available. ??? You can save season 1, but it has no indication that it will ever become available. And season 2 isn’t even listed.

I wonder why this would be? It doesn’t seem to make any sense.

So my question now is — should I just go ahead and watch season 3? Would there be too many inside jokes to understand it?

I’m bummed, I hate watching things out of order … (oh yes, life is hard…)

I read “The Chris Farley Show” this week. What a fascinating read, really. It talks a lot about Chris’ days at Improv Olympic, and Second City.
There are quotes from David Pasquesi (Stew the Meat Man), Tim Meadows, and Robert Smigel (Triumph the Dog, The Dana Carvey Show.)
It mentions Stephen briefly on one page, but it really delves into the crazy psychology that was the comic world at that time. I was a huge Farley fan, and I found it interesting that at the end of his life, he really wanted to do some serious work and get beyond the “fatty falls down” routine he became famous for.

I kind of saw some parallels to Farley and Stephen, in the sense that they are both religious, Irish Catholic, intensely funny people, albeit Farley was physical, and Colbert is more cerebral.

I wonder if Stephen thinks of the future and doing some serious stuff too. I think Farley would have been great at it and it would be neat to see Stephen do some serious art too.

Thanks for listening!

Not to brag on myself too much, but this is a really cool thing I have here that I do with MsI and Kina and Jennie and the rest, and it takes up tons of my time when I’m not at work. @Truthpower:

I work in customer service for a large multinational corporation, as a quotes specialist and administrative support. My skills are amazingly underutilized in a new position I took about seven months ago, but it pays really well since I get lots of OT.

I’ve got a couple of big things coming up in my life (move, vacation), and once those are done, I’m going to try to find a job that actually will allow me to use my mad Excel/Access reporting skills. I’m a reporting analyst by trade, and I do all the reporting for Customer Support. I love reporting – I’m a total numbers junkie. And not much thrills me more than discovering a new Excel formula, or a new way to simplify a query in SQL.

And about getting paid – did you see the Virtual Internet Millionaires episode on Southpark recently? Yeah, that really reminded me why this is a hit-rich and money-poor venture. I would love to blog full time, but the reality is that I barely make enough on the pittance of ads I have on the Shop site to break even. I could monetize the heck out of this site, but since Day 1 I’ve prided myself in having this site be a labor of love and built on the blood, sweat and tears of people as passionate about Colbert as I am. It feels good to be able to say, “I don’t do this for the money.” Knowing that I am doing a good job for the sake of doing a good job is extremely validating for me, quite honestly.

You know, DB, I always wondered how you managed keep this site updated all day. I’m even more impressed now that I know you work in Corporate America. Spending 7 years in corporate myself, I know how hard it is to do anything non-work related, especially if you are sitting in an “open” office plan.

Although, I’m so excited to hear that you’re a fellow Excel/numbers junkie too! I know exactly what you mean about finding new Excel formulas.

If I haven’t said it before, I truly appreciate all that you folks at NFZ do to keep us updated. Your labor of love has brought me hours of sheer joy and I thank-you.

I feel your pain, DB, in being underutilized at work. Though, before I had a chance to quit, they had to lay me off because my former employers didn’t understand that sometimes paying your employees is a little more important than paying for a country club membership. I too spent a great deal of time here while at work, which is the only thing that kept me sane and from jumping out my office window. I hope you’re able to find something much more fulfilling…believe me, I know how you feel.

Ohmygosh, I’m so excited about that movie!

I already loved Get Smart and Steve Carell, but to put them together is a dream come true!

I’ve never seen the show, but the movie has definitely piqued my interest. I loved Dan in Real Life. H/T to you for having actually seen the show!

Oh the show was hysterical! I used to watch it when I was little. It was around in the 60’s I believe, and I didn’t come around until the very late 80’s, but my grandma had them on VHS. You gotta love Don Adams.

I have confidence that Steve Carell will definitely do Maxwell Smart justice.

I’m really excited about the movie too. I used to watch reruns of Get Smart on Nick at Nite and loved every minute of it. My dad loved the original show so much he named the dog after Maxwell Smart.

I think Steve is the perfect choice for a reprise of the role, but I’m still not convinced Anne Hathaway can be 99. Barbara Feldon was so perfect as the original.

That’s very true. I like Anne Hathaway, but I’m not sure how she’s going to fair as 99. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

So I was browsing around Colbert University a while back and looking up the previously asked audience questions, and lo and behold, the questions asked by the audience in Philly that I reported in April were already up on the site!

Man, shout out to you guys for really being on top of things! Keep up the good work.

Oh, WordsWithGrace and friends over there are all over that stuff. She’s amazing – there’s no way the site would be there without her. And I go over there quite a bit for research. This site wouldn’t be as good as it was either without having her wonderful site as a research tool.

Not sure if this is too late in the game to get much play, but can I just declare that I am officially addicted to Twitter? It’s an odd thing. For the longest time I thought it was a waste. Then I started just doing it, and then all of a sudden I just “got” it. Now I love it, and wish more of my friends would do it.

And it’s really easy to follow on my iPhone. So I look at it all the time.

I have seen Speed Racer.

Although the effects and races are best seen on the big screen, I don’t think I’d recommend anyone pay the price of going to the theater to watch it.

But this is not Rain’s fault! I actually thought he was quite good. But I certainly don’t think the frequent antics of a small child and a monkey make automatic funny. They make automatic exasperated Gaia. :(

Last weekend I spilled a diet soda on my laptop and my router stopped working until it completely dried out. I was without the internets for the rest of the weekend. My internet connection is still spotty.

When my router was down, I found out just how addicted to NFZ I have become. All I wanted to do was check in to see what was happening in this wonderful Colbert-centric community. I even went to work early several days this week so I could get on NFZ before the work day officially started.

Thanks DB, minions, and Zoners for making this such an awesome and fun community!

This Day in History-
Because Stephen’s birthday is May 13, I went through TDS and TCR web sites and did a search to see what was aired on May 13. One of my favorite TDS Stephen segments was shown on May 13, 2002.

Stephen went to journalism school:

Happy early birthday Stephen Colbert!!!

Thanks for this video! I’m also curious how much TDS revealed about themselves when doing these field pieces. During a panel discussion posted here not long ago, I know that Stephen said they first claim that they’re from a local news station, but if the subjects keep pushing for more information, they have to admit they are from Comedy Central.

The girl whom Stephen kissed near the end of the segment must have known something was up…or was an actress herself:)

Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks!

P.S. I couldn’t believe how Stephen was hitting on his teacher. Haha! That was great.

A lot of this segment seemed scripted to me so I was thinking that everyone was in on the joke.

My thoughts were that the teachers and students were real but that Stephen had asked them to play along with him so he could film this piece. I’m imagine he would have asked the girl in advance if he could kiss her. The kiss surprised me as well.

I don’t know any of this for sure though…I actually hadn’t thought it through until now.

My favorite part of the video is when Stephen is on the phone crying to Jon and saying he just wants to go home.

HAHA! Thanks for posting that!

I agree with ColbertGirl27- I think that girl may have been an actress because kissing a total stranger probably would have crossed the line. If she wasn’t an actress she was at least in on it somehow.

Still, thanks! :)

that kiss shocked me.:) I think that they were all in the joke in certain sequences of the video, especially after stephen vindicated himself after an all night cramming session, and every body was on the side cheering him on.

Ugh! Ugh! Ugh!!! I need to vent…

WHYYYYY is Comedy Central refusing to load some of the most priceless TCR videos?? Why? They really have no idea how valuable some of those clips are — it’s the show’s history for cryin’ out loud. How could it possibly be so difficult? They spent so much time creating the new site (which is uuber cool), but for some reason, absolutely won’t load some of the older vids?

Please stop hurting the Nation like this…

Let me say a few things in the defense of the CC blogging department. And that is who is in charge of the CC vid site, and is a different group than the ColbertNation.com people.

The CC blogging department (I’m sure there’s a more technical name) is in the middle of revamping tons of sites, like they did with TheDailyShow.com and SouthParkStudios.com. They are making changes, great changes, but unfortunately each change takes time due to approvals and red tape and plain old elbow grease.

Think about your own job – how hard is it to get something super simple done sometimes? At my job, to get a laptop for work, I have to fill out a form, my boss approves it, my boss’s boss approves it, the budget is checked, then the form goes to the IT department and then it is routed to their purchasing yadda yadda yadda. It’s the same at their job, trust me.

I know that the people over there are good people, and I know they are listening to what the fans say and are trying really hard to get the TCR site up to the same level as TheDailyShow.com. But unfortunately, sometimes that process takes a while. If we’re patient, everything will be available.

That’s pretty open-ended … do you generally stick to any particular genre? Fiction, non-fiction, mystery, sci-fi, memoirs, humor, etc.?

Lisa

Haha! I know — I’m open to trying new genres, so I’m really looking for anyone’s recommendations for a book they thought was an absolute must-read (aside from our usual NFZ suspects). Whether it be a classic, satire, biography, etc., I’m open to suggestions.

Hmm. “Must read” is pretty subjective (and may vary according to mood), but some of the books I’ve enjoyed lately:

Leap of Faith — memoirs of Queen Noor of Jordan, an extraordinary woman; she blends a lot of her understanding of the history of the region in with her more straightforward recollections of life with the late King Hussein
The Lucifer Effect, Philip Zimbardo — a fascinating examination of situational psychology, in addition to what he said on The Colbert Report
Shake Hands with the Devil, Roméo Dallaire — a heartbreakingly frustrating look back at Rwanda in 1994, from the commander of the UNAMIR force
The Poisonwood Bible, Barbara Kingsolver — just an incredibly engrossing story, well-written and compelling (in spite of its having been an Oprah book)
The Shadow of the Wind, Carlos Ruiz Zafón — again, a lovely work of fiction … as a bibliophile, I particularly loved the idea of the “Cemetery of Forgotten Books”

Also, if you’re amused by puns and in the mood for something more light-hearted, I’d recommend Jasper Fforde’s books (esp. if you’ve read a lot of “classics”). Start with The Eyre Affair, if you haven’t read him before.

This is perfect! Thanks for all the fantastic suggestions. You know how overwhelming Barnes and Noble can be…everything looks like a good read, but I like taking suggestions from folks to help narrow down the field. : )

Ah, see, that’s where you and I differ, I guess. I love wandering into bookstores and waiting to see what looks good. The problem is trying to limit myself to only a few books at a time. No kidding, I noticed the other day that some of my bookshelves are starting to sag from the weight of the books. It’s a problem.

One warning, most of the books I listed above are pretty hefty. In fact, I was going to mention Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals also, but that one’s practically furniture, it’s so weighty. It’s still a great read; it just might not be the sort of thing you want to slip into a purse to read on your lunch break, you know?

Lisa
May 12th, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Hahaha! I love doing that too — there’s nothing more intoxicating than the smell of new books and I can’t remember the last time I spent less than an hour in a bookstore. Unfortunately, I’ve had to start limiting my book intake…the last time we moved, we had more boxes of my books than we did clothes. So, hubby has nicely requested that we not have to purchase yet another set of shelves. : ) But the thought of giving up my collection of Norton anthologies makes me want to cry… : )

Thanks again for the great suggestions…list updated!

This will probably get lost at the bottom of these comments, but I couldn’t wait for a new “Friday” thread to start – Congratulations to David Javerbaum on his Best Original Score nomination (along with Adam Schlesinger) for “Cry Baby”. The Tony’s air on June 15th and, being the theatre geek that I am, I can’t wait to see if we get a Tony “in the family”. Can “The Daily Show: The Musical” be far behind?

Oh! That just sent me into a fantasy day dream about an all singing, all dancing episode of TCR. If “Buffy” and “Chicago Hope” can do it, Stephen can do it better!
