Media reports on Garrett Reisman’s interview with ‘The Colbert Report’

Oh man, I can’t tell you how much I wish one of these stories would be called “PUNNNNNDDITS INNNNNNN SPAAAAAAACE!!

From the Houston Chronicle:

Astronaut trades jokes with Colbert in space interview

NASA astronaut Garrett Reisman, who is currently orbiting the Earth aboad the international space station, matched wits today with Stephen Colbert, who polks fun nightly at world events from the anchor desk of The Colbert Report.

. . .

“You are an astronaut, you are a scientist. you are an engineer, but more importantly you are a member of the Colbert nation, correct?,” the mock anchor puffed.

“Actually, I would say the Colbert universe, that would be more appropriate,” said Reisman, 40, who holds a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the California Institute of Technology.

“We have gone galactic,” crowed Colbert. “I should say something really profound. Eat it, Jon Stewart! I’m talking to space.”

. . .

Reisman, who is scheduled to return to Earth in mid-June after two weeks on the space station, explained his preparations for the flight included a two-week stay in an undersea habitat off of Florida’s Atlantic Coast in 2003.

“What do you have against the rest of humanity that you have to flee from us every so often,” asked Colbert.

“I think it’s more what the rest of humanity has against me. I keep being sent off to these far places. I try not to take it personally,” Colbert’s space guest responded.

“OK, we have a great job for Reisman,” Colbert chortled in his best bureaucratic personna. “Send him to the bottom of the ocean. That’s not far enough. Launch him into space.”

Reminder: if you missed it this morning, you can watch the full interview on NASA TV; they appear to have the feed cycle back to it every hour or two from this page (go to the “Media Channel” or “Public Channel” section – thanks, LaColberta!).

Oh yeah, and how many of you, like DB, thought “Every pitch he makes is just one of mine with the words ‘in space’ added to the end“? Hee!

Me! I had the same thought! lol

Pitch has to be one of my favourite TDS segments ever. Three brilliant, sexy men trapped in a room together…

God bless the early internet kook “Space Bang!” Doug Bell, author (as Douglas Kendall) of Van Gogh in Space and other “. . . in Space” titles.

    Yup *raises hand also* :)

His glee was so infectious to just hear, I imagine his face tonight will sport the biggest grin ever.

  5. One of the Heroes says:

I can’t get the video to work for me. None of the videos on that web site will play for me. I hope this interview appears somewhere else on the web like YouTube or Daily Motion so that I can see the entire thing.

    • Flatpoint Grief Counselor says:

At NASA TV, click on the Play button next to “Media Channel”, up on the right side. Wait for the video to come up… it may take a minute.

The interview is currently replaying every other hour, starting exactly at the top of the hour.

If you don’t get any video, you may need to update your Windows Media software — I had to.

      • One of the Heroes says:

Thanks for the help. FP Grief Counselor. Maybe I was being too impatient and didn’t wait long enough after hitting the play button.

  6. Andy says:

My problem is that i get random vids, some contain a dude riding an exercise-bike, others seem to show a group of astronauts outdoors answering questions. Is the footage supposed to be random? Maybe I’ll just have to wait for the youtube version.

    • Ms Interpreted says:

Shoot, I guess I don’t know. It came up as the first vid for me, but I don’t know whether it’s changed. Can you do a search for it within the NASA site?

Sorry for the confusion; I would definitely have linked to a direct clip if I’d seen one, but that Public and Media Channel option was the only thing I saw.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

      • One of the Heroes says:

I tried to do a search on the site but the only thing that came up in my search result was the tv schedule. Maybe we have to wait until the video has been archived and is no longer considered a current or new video.

I think I’m just going to have to wait for a YouTube video because I still cannot get any of the videos on that site to work for me.

        • whspbe says:

It’s the first item of the ‘Video-File’ (that’s what you have to look for on the schedules), which means it’s next on at 8pm (eastern), on the ‘media channel’.

(i think, but what’s on now fits with the schedules.)

    @MsI
I think we should launch pundits INTO space…IMO.

      @ gina, LOL!
Bill-O would be my first choice, then Carlson.

really, carlson 2nd? i’d love to send a bowtie into space.

  8. LaColberta says:

It’s “live” tv feed, you have to wait until they show it again, seem as if there are on a 1 hr repeat mode on the media channel and a 2 hr on the public one…but i’m not 100% sure

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  9. AmandaIvy says:

From what I gather, it just came on at 7 pm, and it’s coming on again at 11 p.m.

There’s a link to their daily program schedule next to the video player and it said they play their live ISS Mission Coverage at 11 a.m. and then replay it again at 3 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • AmandaIvy says:

I may be totally wrong though, so if I am, I’m sorry.

  11. AmandaIvy says:

ANYONE SEEING THIS, IT’S ON NOW!

  12. LaColberta says:

its playing now… under “video files”….

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  13. AmandaIvy says:

Lol! I can’t wait to see it on the show!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  14. LaColberta says:

I’m shocked they didn’t put it with the ISS mission coverage, but instead put it in the video files. Video files can be so boring at times, that when I was addicted to NASA tv, that was one of the few programs I never watched.

I think it should be on again at 10 EDT on the media channel. On the public channel it might be on at 12, if they play it semi-immediately after ISS coverage

It sounds like the “audience” is probably staff and crew in the studio.

  17. somuch2kno says:

I loved the time-delayed reaction. Reisman is great! I can’t wait to see how they shoot and edit in Stephen’s in-studio part.

I hope Stephen has him on the show – in the studio – once he’s back in June!

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  18. Flatpoint Grief Counselor says:

What a GREAT interview. I have watched it 3 times now. Stephen’s voice is so entertaining – dare I say, adorable – even without seeing his face.

My favorite part is the very beginning: “Awesome! I can’t believe my voice is going to space!” He really geeked out all over the place. So adorable. Okay, stop it… now I’m turning off my computer.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  19. Olivia says:

OMG YOU GUYS. THAT WAS SO COOL.

Also, I love that the satellite delay between TCR and space is exactly the same as the satellite delay between TDS and Austin, Texas.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  20. zonkbert says:

I watch the online version, and I think they cut out the “what do you have against humanity” bit that was also reminiscent of the BKAD of “what is it about your state that make people want to leave the earth” :)

Did they also cut it from the aired episode?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

    • Jennie says:

The on-line version is the same as the version aired on TCR.

Of course, what NASA TV showed was just the raw footage from ISS which contained some unaired topics, longer delays, Stephen checking his notes, etc. It was interesting to see how they took that and edited down. I was actually not expecting so much of the original material to make it to air.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  21. Carrie says:

Gahhh, is it too late to catch the raw footage anywhere now?

WHY WAS I LIVING UNDER A ROCK ALL THIS TIME?
