Six Degrees: Amy Sedaris talks about a ‘Strangers with Candy’ Christmas movie?!

By Ms Interpreted on May 7th, 2008 ·

We love Amy Sedaris — I mean, we really love Amy Sedaris. But how can she tease us Colbert fans about a Strangers with Candy Christmas movie like this?!

From the Onion A.V. Club:

Amy Sedaris
Interviewed by David Wolinsky
May 7th, 2008

Though Amy Sedaris is perhaps best known for her character Jerri Blank, a middle-aged former prostitute turned high-school student from Comedy Central’s cult series Strangers With Candy (and its 2006 movie prequel by the same name), the New York-born comic actress has had a varied career beyond that role, both onscreen and off. In addition to her ongoing multitude of film and TV roles (Snow Angels, Wonder Showzen), she’s also a writer, cook, and hostess—three passions she combined for 2006’s “entertaining guide to entertaining,” I Like You: Hospitality Under The Influence. The A.V. Club talked to Sedaris about the next Strangers With Candy special and how David Letterman tortures her.

. . .

AVC: Despite all of Jerri’s problems, she never seems to be self-conscious.

AS: No, she’s like a kid. She lives in the moment. There’s no future or past; she’s just in the moment like a five-year-old.

AVC: Would you revisit her?

AS: We’ve been asked to do a Christmas movie, but [Stephen] Colbert is really busy right now with [The Colbert Report]. I doubt he’d be able to contribute. If Stephen couldn’t be involved, it’d be fun to open up with [his character, Charles Noblet's] funeral. He died, and [Paul Dinello's character] Jellineck meets Chris Meloni. They fall in love, and then the ghost of Noblet can haunt them. Jerri would be in some center trying to eat oatmeal.

AVC: She’s trying to eat oatmeal?

AS: Whatever they do in centers. Try to get coffee? Vending machine? [Laughs.] I don’t know. But I want her to have painted-on eyebrows and her hair to be like a coconut, scattered and brittle, like she just aged incredibly. Paul is who he is, and if Paul ever has a flashback, he can look like Andy Samberg. The flashback could be literally the night before, and it’d be like, “God, you’ve aged 20 years overnight, man!” Maybe Noblet was murdered, but the case would be about accusing me, but no one ever really investigates.

AVC: Like a Christmas whodunit.

AS: It could be set up that way, like, “Isn’t anybody investigating?” “No, no. Maybe next year.”

Okay, really, the rest of the interview is excellent, too; do read it. I’m still just all verklempt both at the notion of an SwC Christmas movie and the notion that they might have to kill off Noblet to do it …

Sounds like they’re planning for the ghost of Chuck Noblet to do voice over work which Stephen could probably fit into his schedule. I hope they do something!

Kill off Chuck Noblet? I would love to see another SWC movie but I don’t like the idea of a Chuck Noblet death. Of course, I know that Stephen is way too busy to be an integral part of a motion picture.

Maybe he could be reincarnated?
But we must find the wand.

Much as I love SWC and I’d like to see more of it, I’m not liking this idea too much. I can’t even fathom SWC without Noblet.

Can you imagine Noblet haunting Geoffrey? He’d be one cranky ghost . . .

Like Saddam Hussein trying to tempt Satan when Satan was finally in a good relationship with Chris? *South Park reference*

Too bad a crazy Blithe Spirit can’t be made of this.

I actually think this storyline would be hilarious … but only if Noblet were actually around in ghost form to haunt Geoffrey. Which kind of defeats the purpose of the character being killed off.

Could you imagine it, though? Chuck’s ghost would be totally peeved all the time because, after all his posturing, he’s stuck as a ghost instead of being in Heaven. He’d *absolutely* haunt Geoffrey, and Geoffrey would probably be terrified of ghosts, but he’d be just as unable to get away from the spectral Noblet as he was to deal with Noblet’s abuse when Chuck was still alive … it would just be ridiculous. In the best possible way.

And you KNOW Chuck’s ghostly robes would make him look hippy.

Amy is one crazy stream-of-consciousness lady in this interview. I love her!

Now I have to put my foot down. No SWC without Chuck Noblet! It only works with all three of them — the balance would be destroyed. Even my 65 yr old mother loves Chuck AND Geoffrey!

Colbert can shoot his part in a week. AND the damn thing is shot in New Jersey anyway! Come on! God Bless It!!!

Somebody help me…

As awesome as another movie would be, I get the impression that Amy’s just goofing around here. I can’t imagine her and Paul seriously doing another movie without Stephen.

Oh, I think she’s probably joking, too, Inara Serra. But … it’s Amy, so you never know. And Stephen *is* busy.

That said, I stand by what I posted above; this could be a truly hilarious storyline. Nonetheless, as much as I love Paul and Amy (and Hollimon, et al), if they did another SwC movie without Stephen … :(

I remember reading an interview with Amy a while back in which she mentioned the possibility of an SWC Christmas movie. I’d love to see it but with the cast’s already busy schedules, I’ll be a little surprised if it happens (at least any time soon).

Well, I know better than to question your authority on Amy! I agree; I’d love to see this, but I’m sure scheduling the time to do it would be next to impossible (for the moment).

Couldn’t they just quickly film whatever bits they have for Stephen during the week-long breaks him and Jon have? I mean, sure, doing so might age him a few years, and deprive him of family time… BUT IT’S FOR US! XD

Haha, kidding, but I’m super pumped despite. :3

They can’t kill Noblet.
Sure, the ghost thing is a little interesting, but he needs to be alive for the whole movie to really work.
Maybe they could just do like an hour long special for Comedy Central.

Not gonna lie. I know whatever Amy decides to do, that it will be nothing short of genius.

But I would really hate to see them kill off Noblet. Like…really hate it.

Ditto. Noblet is just too good a character to kill off, for any reason.

I want to get SWC from Netflix, but my question is — which to watch first, the tv show or the movie?

I know the movie is a “prequel” right? But that doesn’t necessarily mean I should watch it first.

Anyone have an opinion/suggestion?

I watched the movie before the series. Even though it’s a “prequel,” there are a bunch of jokes and references to the series in it. It’s probably better to watch the show first, in my humble opinion.

I agree. I would watch the television series first. I had the same experience as Inara Serra. I watched the movie, then the television series, and then the movie again a year later. The movie was so much better after watching the whole series first.

In the movie commentary, they refer back to the tv series so I’m sure they were assuming that the movie’s core audience would be comprised of fans of the show.

The movie’s not exactly a prequel in the traditional sense—it starts out earlier than the series does, but it’s also sort of an alternate universe/retelling. Seeing it first would probably lead to confusion due to plot inconsistencies rather than clearing anything up. I definitely recommend watching the TV series first (it’s better than the movie, anyhow).

i met Amy in April in chicago at a book-signing/ benefit, (the highlight of my year so far) and i asked her “please do tcr again.” she just said, “it’s so weird….” and trailed off.

but stephen said he would love to do something with her again. without stephen to contribute writing to an swc project, it would be pretty hard to pull off. but i think we all need some more jerri blank:)

…and don’t forget to watch the SWC movie *with* the Commentary. It’s even better than the film.

NOOOO!!! They can’t kill off Noblet… but it would be kind of funny to see a cross-over where Stephen kills/eats Chuck Noblet (which, if they need to show a body on TCR would be Kevin Spacey?)(since he seems to be doing that a lot these days).
LOL at Chris Meloni being Geoffrey’s new “friend”.

I cannot believe I didn’t see this post the last time i was on here! What the heck is wrong with me? Lol.

As said many times before, I would absolutely die of happiness if another SWC project were to surface. But at the same time, I really don’t like the idea of Noblet being killed off (or even a ghost, really).

The whole Chuck/Geoffrey thing is one of my favorite parts of the show and movie.

I don’t know though… Stephen’s pulled off doing so much outside of TCR, you never know though. I mean, the SWC movie came out in what, 2006? TCR was around then. And he wrote “I Am America” while doing the show. And not to mention his doing appearances practically EVERYWHERE. *crosses fingers* There’s a possibility of pulling it off if they wanted to do it bad enough.

They filmed the SWC movie long before TCR existed, though.

no! they can’t do SWC without Colbert, that would be so awful…i mean, boviously it would still be hilarious cuz it’s SWC, but…it’d be so wrong…I’d feel so dirty watching it!

BUT I would love anything else SWC-related.

I’d love to see more SWC stuff too. But Mr. Noblet is too busy and does have a family. I don’t think I’d watch anything SWC without Mr. Noblet in there too.

I couldn’t even stand it when they decided not to use some of the original characters in the SWC movie. And now they’re thinking about doing another movie but without Noblet!?
I mean I understand about the whole schedule thing, but STILL! I think I might just go crazy.

(reCAPTCHA: Meyer constructing)- makes me think back to the Time 100. Stephanie Meyer(s?) is on her laptop constructing ways to knock Stephen, Shigeru, and Rain off the top 3.
