I’ve spent the last 45 minutes watching the videos featured over at Film.com that feature a group Q&A of Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell and Jon Stewart at the Paley Center for Media. My stomach hurts, HURTS I tell ya! You must go watch every single one of these videos, but do not drink during these particular ones due to the fact that you will spit it on your keyboard. Um … trust me on this.
- The Downfalls Of Fame – “Daily Show” Correspondent Stephen Colbert discusses how the show’s fame has made it almost impossible to trick the interviewees anymore. He relates a story of an unsuspecting guest who thought orange juice was turning people gay.
- Audition Process – “Daily Show” Correspondent Stephen Colbert reveals how he got cast for the show. Writer Madeleine Smithberg remembers the audition tape he sent with fellow actor Steve Carell. [NOTE: Live version of "Waiters who are nauseated by food" is a must see]
- Stephen Colbert, Again A Look Back – “Daily Show” Correspondent Stephen Colbert talks about his last solo project “Stephen Colbert, Again a Look Back” and the good chance he will do another. [NOTE: The whole video is worth it for Jon's zinger at the end.]
- Unusable Material – “Daily Show” Host Jon Stewart and Correspondent Stephen Colbert talk about material that can’t be used. Colbert tells the story of how he got sued over a piece.
And if you’ve never seen the bit from The Daily Show about orange juice making you gay, check the videos out after the break.
Seriously huge Tip of the Hat for W&M_NU for finding these gems!

The “Again, A Look Back” is my favorite. Huge love for that one.

I never watched the original “Again, A Look Back.” Is video of that floating around somewhere?

I’m not totally sure, although the vids do tend to pop up when people look hard enough. If I have time to nose around when I’m off of work (in like, 2010?), I’ll see what I can find. Of course, if anyone else wants to link a copy here, that would be okay, too! :)

steve carell seems awfully quiet.

He usually is. In all the interviews I’ve seen with him, he’s really rather quiet and reserved.

Hello again. Just came back from a weekend without a computer and I’ve finally caught up after 2 1/2 hours!
Anyway, thanks for posting these clips. Stephen’s extensive take on mercury was priceless and again displays his incredible wit and intellect. I love how Steve and Jon started rolling their eyes as if thinking “Oh boy…here he goes again. What a nerd. He just has to show off how much he knows.” Haha.
According to the website, it looks like this panel discussion took place this past April. Is this correct? If so, I am furious at myself since I live in LA and could have attended this discussion! Arrrgh!

I’m fairly sure this was a few years ago, before the Report. I remember the same clips were posted online sometime last year.

Yah, they used to be up on Yahoo somewhere (don’t know if they’re still there). I want to say that the clips are from sometime between 2002 and 2004.
(Hmm, my reCAPTCHA words are “pegged wives”)

The yahoo ones are still up, here. They’re from 2002, if yahoo is to be believed.

I guess I could have capitalized “mercury,” but he did refer to the lowercase mercury near the end of his speech:)

I LOVE the reprise of “Waiters Nauseated by Food”. I literally had tears in my eyes after that clip.
I also loved in the one about Stephen Colbert Again, A Look Back, at the very end when he went on and on about Mercury and he goes “I like big words…”
Awesome find, DB! Thanks!

My favorite part about that bit is Steve Carell, who, as Stephen goes on and on, looks initially confused, then bored, then his eyes start to widen, and then he mouths “OMG.” You have to wonder how many times he’s had to listen to Stephen go on like that.

Yeah! I went back to watch Steve’s reactions and it was a definite “OMG, here we go again” sort of reaction.
At the beginning too, (I didn’t notice it the first time around) but at the very beginning when the asker says “This is for Mr. Colbert”, he whips off his glasses, licks his lips and raises his eyebrow all sexy-like. I almost inhaled the strawberry I was eating. I can’t believe I missed that bit of comedic gold the first time I watched it. (Then again, if you look at my time stamp, it was WAY late.)

(I know I’m replying to my own post) I just realized why the lip-licking thing was so funny (besides the obvious)! One of my ex-boyfriends used to do that all the time to make me laugh. Of course, he didn’t look like Stephen, but its the EXACT same expression.
Wow. I think I may be traumatized now.

I was gasping for air while I watched the Dana Carvey Show clip. If anyone hasn’t seen it yet, you can find it here on CU.

Hulu.com has the whole series (all 8 episodes of it). Stephen really doesn’t get enough opportunities these days to show off his skills as an impressionist. His George Harrison and Geraldo are particularly impressive. His Peter Jennings also makes me laugh.

Is the “Direction for the show” clip the same as the “Aims of the show” one?
I wish the video was one long clip of the Q&A so that it would flow better, but I understand the site’s need to embed ads for the sake of this content.
That’s good stuff, DB! :)

OH, btw is the “Nazi” piece Colbert mentioned on the TDS website, or was it even redacted there?

I’ve looked for it, but haven’t been able to find it. In any event, I think it was before Jon was on the show, and videos from that era aren’t available.

Thanks for these videos–now I have a plan for my lunch hour! I know this is a blog about Stephen but Steve looks so adorable in the picture posted with this entry.

That picture of the two of them is really cute though.

That was a wonderful way to start my day. That was great in so many ways. Though I think the link the “Aims of the Show” video might be broken.

It was from 1998.

Everyone else has pretty much covered my reaction to Stephen’s mercury/Mercury ramble, but does anyone know why the questioner told Stephen that he was mercury/Mercury? I seriously don’t get it.
Am I the only one who thinks Carell looks absolutely adorable in the above picture. Stephen looks so relaxed and professor-like, while Steve looks like a little girl. No offense to Steve, I just mean the way he is sitting is like a nervous child. I wish we could see Jon because I’m sure he is sitting like a high schooler bored in class. Does that make sense? I just find it so hilarious how different these guys are when they are out of character. All so cute, though.

Yeah. In out of character interviews it seems as if Stephen’s professorial, Steve’s reserved, and Jon’s annoyed/bored.

The way Stephen launches into the Mercury rant, combined with Steve and Jon’s reaction, makes it seem like it might have been from a previous sketch or scene. Or maybe someone else’s material that Stephen was quoting. That might also explain how the person in the audience knew how to push Stephen’s ‘on’ button. I love how it finishes with an alternate definition – “the metal that makes you insane” – which may well be the real (comic) reason for referencing mercury in the first place.
And when he says, “I like big words,” I hear a little Jerri Blank in there. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s something she’s actually said at some point, or if Stephen just says it with a Jerri inflection.
The whole things just busts me up every time. The way Stephen slips in and out of things is breathtaking.

It doesn’t get any better than seeing Stephen, Steve, and Jon together. I always find it interesting to see how very different their personalities are yet how well they play off of each other and how well they complement each other. They are all three hilariously funny too!

This is fun. Am going through them now. Whata buncha loonies. No wonder they are rich and famous. We need more loonies like this.

Personally, I liked the story of Mercury more when he was Hermes, still in the cradle and watched over by Apollo — “I am just a swaddling babe. Dear brother, how could I steal your cattle?” ;>

oh my god. I laughed so hard at all of these. I love Stephen’s “Mercury” rant.
