Sounds like someone in Philly is just a little bit sick of the cheesesteak angle on Phildelphia stories. From Philadelphia Weekly:

Hey, guess what? A comedy show came to Philadelphia for a week, and while it was here filmed a little bit about cheesesteaks. Yes, I”m pretty shocked as well, since nobody who ever comes to Philadelphia ever mentions cheesesteaks.

I can kind of sympathize with the poster’s perspective; I’m sure the stereotypes do get old. That said, I’m also glad he conceded that the segment was actually funny. Otherwise, I would have suspected that he was just retaliating after discovering that Stephen only considered Philly a one-week stand.
as a foreigner, who just last night saw what an actual cheesecake was, i was very impressed and wanted to take a shuttle to Penn. immediately and munch on that wonderful looking sandwich! I get it now, why this sandwich is so big, thanks to Stephen Colbert! Thanks for making me an ‘it getter’ :)

Some people take the cheesesteak thing very seriously. I’ve lived ten minutes from Philly my whole life. Once at college a friend asked me if I thought Pat’s or Geno’s was better. I told her that I have never, ever eaten a cheesesteak in Philly, and hadn’t even heard of either place until that moment. I thought her eyes would roll out of her head by the look she gave me!

Tyler Perry is up there now? He’s a comedian/actor/writer and he’s pretty funny, but I wouldn’t consider him “influential”. I’ve tried to avoid even looking at the Time poll lately. It just makes me mad. Lol.

I’ve never eaten a Philly Cheesesteak actually from Philly, but we have this little mom and pop type restaurant down here in NC called Burgermeister that supposedly gives them a run for their money. I think the owners are from Philly.. . at least that’s what I’ve heard. We all know how reliable rumors are.

Being from Seattle, I will testify there’s the same kind of ubiquitous references to Starbucks and coffee, and yes, it causes most natives to cringe a bit and repress a sigh. Mainly, because most locals try to avoid ‘Charbucks” beverages, as we find their coffee burnt and unpalatable on the best days.
But the references still abound…that, and curses about Vista. *outward sigh*
My dad’s from Philly and has nothing but good to say about his hometown’s beloved cheesesteak sandwiches. I’ve never had one meself, but from sight alone, I wager it would taste like a heartattack on a plate. ;-)
