Lessons from Philadelphia

A few more parting thoughts from Philly, courtesy of Philadelphia Weekly:

What the Primary Taught Us

Hillary lived in Scranton as a little girl … as a little girl … as a little girl … as a little girl.

When describing Philadelphia politics, the out-of-town media will always mention the time Santa Claus was hit by a snowball at an Eagles game.

The same out-of-town media will also note with derision that “street money” is one of Philadelphia’s oldest political traditions.

It’s clear now, thanks to Colbert, that the Ben Franklin creep has become our unofficial mascot.

. . .

All it took was watching Larry King interview Stephen Colbert to know the CNN host is now officially one can short of a six-pack.

The “Ben Franklin creep”? Ouch! The linked article also chimes in on some of Stephen’s other Pennsylvanian guests, but I’ll admit it, the real reason I blogged this article is because I wanted an excuse to use this photo that Jennie sent me earlier; it totally cracks me up:

Thanks, Jennie!

Aw. I wouldn’t call Ben Franklin a creep. Jovial and mischievous would be more like it. Love the pic!

At the bottom of the Philadelphia Weekly page is a link to another article which is also quite amusing (contains light profanity):

“The Steaks Are High: Barack Obama stops by Pat’s, eats a sandwich, blows Catholic minds.”

This may be a bit off topic, but today I needed a break from work and was trying to find that picture of Stephen and Jon with their wives at the Emmys. I found it and then had to look at every other Getty Image out there. Which leads me to the picture that made my day:

My other realization is that for the most part, when they are out of suits they have horrid fashion sense – especially Jon. Why not wear jeans? Jeans are much preferrable to khakis. And, Stephen has a huge Adam’s apple. I noticed this in the “Korean” video too…

Oh, boo! He wasn’t creepy at all but a sweetie ol’ BF impersonator. And speaking as an early American history buff, he has a really fun job.

“…the Ben Franklin creep…?” Wow, what a snotty thing to say! Hope that writer didn’t throw something out trying to be hipper-than-thou. I really enjoyed Stephen and Ben’s banter during the week of Philly shows. No accounting for taste, I ‘spose…

    @wb,

“And, Stephen has a huge Adam?s apple. I noticed this in the ?Korean? video too?”

He needs it to speak loudly. How else will the Nation listen to Stephen?

And I think BF was hilarious. Especially when holding the roomba and the toaster.

@wb: Haha. What a pic! Looks like Jon shrunk by a foot!

I don’t know about Jon, but I think Stephen dresses pretty nicely if you look at him in the fan pics on the Colbert Pics site. Not a trendsetter, but not bad. Considering his celebrity status, I like that the fact that he keeps things simple.

Also love that his wife is not a size zero and is naturally beautiful rather than Hollywood beautiful.

I dunno about the Ben Franklin comment, but I think everything else was pretty on point. I also enjoyed this little number…

Thanks to ABC, the Constitution Center will now always be the joint where that shameful debate took place.

I’m from Philly. Ben Franklin is truly the native son — I am surprised how little people in other cities seem to know about him, as he was one of the Great American Heroes of his day, was talented in so many areas, did so many great things, and was not afraid to be on the bawdy side as well. I somehow think he and Colbert would have gotten along swimmingly in real life.
