BRATTLEBORO — Sen. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., took on the harshest, most cutthroat conservative pundit Monday night — or at least the hardshest, most cutthroat conservative imitator — when he appeared as a guest on Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” serving up political theory laced with Bush jokes.

Sanders said it was the show’s break from the typical point of view that intrigued him and most viewers.

“People, especially young people, are becoming increasingly skeptical about network news, about corporate media. Amazingly, many of them are turning to Comedy Central, the Jon Stewart show and ‘The Colbert Report,’ to get a different perspective,” Sanders said.

Sanders took this chance to reach a younger audience about democratic socialism, a key topic for Sanders. He and Colbert also spoke about trickle-down economics and the need for national health care and a college education for everyone with lots of witty banter thrown in.

“I think I did OK,” Sanders said Monday after taping the show.

“He was a very nice guy. We had a lot of fun,” Sanders said.

I thought he did a fantastic job! He stuck to his guns and was very passionate about what he was saying, which always brings out the best in “Stephen”. Plus, he didn’t try to be funny…that is key! Great job last night, Senator Sanders!
