The coveted ‘Colbert Bump’

It's like a bizarro world Mt. Rushmore!
Sometimes, size matters. So who do you think got the biggest bump last night? Indecision 2008 has a poll set up here. Unfortunately, there’s no option for “Edwards if you judge by their individual segments, Obama if you’re asking about the evening, overall.” Still, it’s an interesting little poll. I wonder if Indecision can manage more respectable voter participation numbers than we see in the general election …

And thank goodness McCain wasn’t on last night, too, or we might have seen a “self-canceling vortex of Colbert Bumps“!

(Okay, I’ll admit it. I *am* interested in finding out who got the biggest bump, but I really just wanted an excuse to use that cool composite that I totally pulled from the Comedy Central Insider. It reminds me of a nutty Mt. Rushmore, and that reminds me of an old Second City sketch about “Four Stone Guys,” and that reminds me that … I live in a weird, weird little world all of my own.)

    I thought Hillary appeared somewhat wooden. She muffed her lines about toggling, etc. And the Bump goes to…Barack Obama!

    Did anyone remind Barack last night that it was a COMEDY show??? Man, I know Stephen plays a narcissistic blowhard on tv but we all know who plays one in real life after last night. lol

    Hillary, on the other hand, did it with such grace and charm.

    Hey do you guys know about this. Apparently Evie is judging for an award in SC.

    That is a cool composite. Now *I* want to find some excuse to use it…

    I totally voted for Edwards. He got us all talking about how utterly awesome he is, and really, isn’t that the desired effect of the Colbert Bump?

    Plus I can’t count how many times I’ve read someone saying he better get tapped as veep after this. If that’s not a major Bump, I’ll eat my hat.

    I totally agree with bowlofpetunias.

    I’m personally an Obama supporter, but at the same time I’m not a Hillary-hater either. She would do fine. If whoever wins the nomination doesn’t pick Edwards as their running mate, I will be severely disappointed.

    Veep Edwards FTW!

  6. Ms Interpreted says:

    It’s almost a shame that Edwards has said he won’t run for VP again, but I can understand where he’s coming from.

    I read one suggestion on a blog somewhere that, assuming a Democrat is elected (oh please, oh please) and one of the Supreme Court Justices retires, Edwards would be an interesting nominee for the bench. It really came out of the blue and I haven’t seen it repeated, so unfortunately I can’t give you a reference, but I thought it was a pretty cool suggestion.

    I think The Report itself got the biggest bump with Stephen’s trifecta of political “gets”. I’m sure he pulled in new viewers from this Philadelphia road trip plus his field pieces this past week were hysterical. Kudos all around.

    I’m not sure that we could say one way or the other who got the biggest Bump. Both candidates appeared, in some form or another, on the show and neither one did an actual interview, so there’s no way to judge from that. Maybe Hillary gets a few more points for showing up in person, but who can deny the excitement over seeing the On Notice Board again (I miss that bit!). Out of everyone, I’d say John Edwards probably got the biggest bump, despite the fact he’s no longer running for President. He did a fantastic job reciting The Word last night and seemed to really enjoy the time he spent on the show, which always makes it more fun for us to watch at home.

    I agree with vigwig — I think the show itself got a huge bump, with all the publicity and interviews that came along with it. I’m sure the Doritos guys are pretty happy too…I’d love to find out how the show’s endorsement of their new flavor is effecting their sales.

    aww, the Edwards part was my favorite, but I wanted to vote for Patrick Murphy, he got overshadowed by the candidates, but that was a pretty good appearance for a newbie congressman. go fightin’ 8th! ;)

    I thought John Edwards’ appearance was the best, but Obama probably got the biggest “bump” out of it.

    A friend of mine mentioned awhile back that Edwards might be interested in the Attorney General position if a Democrat gets elected. She couldn’t cite a source for that information, and it might’ve been pure speculation, but it’s interesting anyway.

    And in other news, apparently Obama’s going to appear on TDS on Monday, according to CNN.

    (Apologies if that’s already been mentioned somewhere and I just didn’t see it.)

    @vigwig

    Did the show really get much of a bump? Both Obama and Edwards were unannounced guests so I’m not sure how big of a ratings boost TCR got that night since nobody knew in advance about it. we’ll have to see what ratings look like on Monday to find out.

    plus i’ve been scanning the Google News-o-sphere and it doesn’t seem like there are as many news stories about the TCR ep compared to say… the botched ABC News debate.

    mrtigger001–

    I’m sure the rebroadcasts got more viewers than they usually do. I watched the rebroadcast this morning, and my roommate’s promised to watch tonight’s. Edwards’ appearance was leaked a little while before the show aired, so that probably garnered some extra viewers too.

    If the show didn’t get a bump now, it probably will eventually, because this episode was definitely Emmy-worthy, IMO.

    @mrtigger001

    Probably not a bump so much in terms of ratings, but in terms of the coverage the show’s getting now.

    … that being said, I voted for Edwards.

    I also include a bump in weeks to come with new viewers to TCR as a result all of the Philadelphia awesomeness.

    mmmm… somebody should definitely keep tabs on the ratings in the weeks to come and confirm the bump.

    This is kind of OT, but does anyone think that Clinton knew the show was going to end with Obama? If not, I’m gonna guess she’s pretty pissed. I loved it, though =>

    @Jawz,

    I’m an Obama supporter and earlier kind of dissed Hillary’s appearance here on NFZ, but on sober reflection I feel kind of sorry for her. It’s difficult to imagine she would have agreed to the script if she knew what the surprise ending would be (a lovefest over her opponent). The truth will probably remain a secret of the show.

    I also want to mention how much I enjoyed Patrick Murphy’s appearance last night. He was completely overshadowed by larger political celebrities, yet he made the most of his interview in a happy, comfortable fashion. Hopefully he had one of the great nights of his life. I’d like to see him again on TCR sometime.

  18. Kevin B says:

    I thought the episode was amazing. The Ed Words was my favorite part, it was a call for substance. Unfortunately, substance is something that the media and candidates seem allergic to at times.

    It really put the Clinton bit into perspective. While it was funny to watch a politician try to talk like a techie, it didn’t cover up the fact that she offered nothing more than an unsubstantiated “I can fix your problems.”

    Finally, Obama’s segment highlighted my frustrations at the insipid fixation by the media on non issues. These candidates are giving speeches nonstop as humans they are bound to say stupid and even borderline offensive things at times. This doesn’t mean it’s an offense worthy of political attacks of the magnitude we’ve seen.

    Biggest bump? Obama. However given the Report’s young audience I can’t imagine it making that much of a statistical difference.
