Klassic Kolbert: “The son of a turd miner …”
ByI was just watching that hilarious EdWØRDs video for about the millionth time when it occurred to me that I should remind people that John Edwards is the son of a mill worker. I mean, I’m not sure people knew that about him.
Of course, Sen. Edwards isn’t the only former Presidential candidate who comes from humble origins. Lest it be forgotten, our very own Stephen Colbert has a tale of woe to share:

I love the ridiculous stares I get whenever I watch this video, because it NEVER fails to make me shriek with laughter (granted, I’m in the library, so it’s more of a muffled laughter-spasm).
Stephen’s immense ability to keep a straight face baffles me to no end. So much so that I forgive him for pronouncing it Appa-LAY-chian. I go to Appalachian State University, and pronouncing it that way is practically the 8th deadly sin around here.

Haha I loved when he brought this up on The Daily Show right before he announced his run for presidency.

@AmandaIvy:
So I know, how is Appalachian pronounced by the locals? :)

@ laughing at nothing–
We pronounce it Appa-LATCH-ian.
I did notice though, before his presidential announcement on TDS and in “I Am America (And So Can You!)” he pronounced it correctly, so he apparently picked up on it somewhere along the way.
Or if you really want to irk people you can pronounce it Appa-LAY-SHUN, like my dad does. Even I admit sometimes it’s fun to mispronounce it to see the looks on people’s faces go from that of southern hospitality to that of utter hatred in an instant.

Why it took me so incredibly long to discover The Daily Show I will never freakin’ know. This was brilliant and hilarious — thanks for posting it!

Thanks for posting this clip, it’s really good.
There are some unsaid jokes in this, maybe if The Word had existed then, the bullet could have read, ‘he had to eat s*** to survive’. There are others, but I’d better stop there.
It’s Friday night!

An absolutely flawless display of perfect writing, timing and expression.
This made my 65 yr old mother laugh so hard she asked to see it again.
