That had to be the best Report I’ve ever seen! Given all Stephen has done in the last few months, that’s saying a lot… I’m so happy to be part of the Nation.
Thanks to NFZ for all of your hard work!

Mike,
Nope. He was there, too. Just a really strong show, through and through. :)

John Edwards had tears of laughter welling up in my eyes! I’m still grinning like a total idiot.
Mike- Patrick Murphy was still there, and he was good too, but he was kind of overshadowed by the events surrounding his appearance.

Can I make an admission to all my fellow Zoners here: I totally have a crush on John Edwards. I’ve always loved him, but after his performance tonight . . . *happy sigh as words fail me*

@amandaivy,
I was at the taping this evening. When John Edwards was delivering “EDWORDS”, Stephen was reading along with the teleprompter in some parts. He was also laughing through a lot of it. Edwards did amazingly well!

Apparently a lot more than what we saw went on during the taping. There’s a report here: http://daygloparker.livejournal.com/886654.html
(Note: lots of, shall we say, questionable language.)

@Meaculpa,
I totally agree with you! I will die the day this show ends. My very survival depends on this show. Man Stephen put together the most awesome Colbert Report ever!!!!! And I loved how he brought back the on Notice board. I don’t think I’ve actually seen him use that. My fandom began a little over 1 year ago. Stephen ROCKS!!!

*Grabby Hands* Emmy!!!! And I’m not even saying ‘please’!
In a similar way to the MLK/Andrew Young show, this one just kept building, one awesome moment after the next, capped by John EdWORDs and Stephen’s hyped-up closing.
At times I’m amazed at how much they manage to cram into a half hour. I know I’m being greedy, but I’d love for there to be a one hour special, maybe around election-time. The possibilities for delicious chaos are endless!!

He couldn’t have John McCain on–the real Stephen wouldn’t want a Republican to get the Colbert Bump. That said, I am in AWE of Stephen for conceiving and putting together a true coup!

I haven’t commented in a little bit, but I had to come out of the woodwork and say that tonight’s episode was tremendous! I read the taping report on LJ (thanks for the link bowlofpetunias!) and I’m amazed by what they pulled off tonight. Wonderful job TCR! And a big thanks also to the NFZ staff for all their great work this week covering Stephen’s extra appearances in the media.

No offense to her supporters, but Hillary was lame! The writing was ideal but her delivery was wooden and expectacious for applause. Brown and turquoise??!
I’ve been on John Edwards’ political email list for five years (time slips by doesn’t it) and still have the 2004 election’s lawn sign. Still waiting for for life without rumors!
Barack Obama’s satellite appearance: in the sung words of John Travolta, “I’m in love/I’m in love/I’m in love whooo!” Purely platonically, he’s a fine man.

“I will only support the candidate who promises to make me a sPah, that would be so cooooo…I wont mah face on money”
just wondering why Stephen forgot to thank him.haha

@Barbara: I don’t think Stephen would care if McCain got a “bump” from being on his show. He’s had plenty of people on his show he doesn’t see eye-to-eye with. What a boring show it would be if he only had people like his real self as guests.
Oh yeah and this episode was AMAZING. John Edwards made me laugh so hard.

The episode was hilarious, but was anyone else also a little bothered by it? I mean this in the most “I love this show” way possible, but, it’s just, it reminds me of that article posted here a little while ago about the difference between real satire and fake satire, where the targets of fake satire can comfortably play along with the joke because they know they’re not really being satirized. I’d rather the Colbert Report retain its satirical edge. Obama’s appearance, especially, was basically just a plug for his campaign, not only on his part (which is understandable), but on Stephen’s as well. And I’m actually an Obama supporter, but the thing is that Stephen’s character isn’t supposed to be. I like that Nancy Pelosi and a lot of Democratic politicians won’t come on the show, despite the fact that the real Stephen is probably usually on their side. It seems to me that the situation with these presidential candidates should have been similar, but it wasn’t, and that doesn’t feel true to the show.
It was still funny, though. I laughed a lot when John Edwards was going on and on about the jetskis.

Wow! What an amazing finish to such a wonderfully surprising week in Philly! Congrats to everyone who worked so hard this week to put all the shows together, coordinate everything, and put on the best 4 shows I’ve ever seen. And as always, Stephen was amazing!
I had a feeling Hillary and Obama would take the Colbert Bump bait…

How am I going to come down to earth again after this evening? I love that Stephen teared up at the end of the show and shook the hands of everyone on the crew, etc. So wonderful to see someone so genuine become so successful and retain his integrity and thoughtfulness towards others. Stephen, I hope I am married to you in the afterlife. God bless you!

@ omnie: I know what you mean. I’ll admit that this wasn’t my favorite episode this week, but I think it was the most monumental episode due to the guests and the most emotional episode for me simply because it was the finale of a long, exciting roller coaster of a Colbert week and I am sad that it is over.
I think Stephen’s political leanings might have come through a little bit more this week, but I’m wondering if that’s simply because he’s so immersed in the heart of the primary this week and not working from his home base….or really does have a crush on Michelle Obama and wants to finish serenading her:)
Don’t worry. Stephen won’t lose his edge.
I’m afraid I’m monopolizing the board here. I’ll be quiet for awhile (sheepish face).

Hey, long time reader, first time poster, motivated by that exceptional episode we just witnessed…
Holy Shmokes. That whole episode was amazing. Although for me, John Edwards totally came out my favorite. Now I wish he was still running, if only I’d known about his great sense of humor…His whole segment was flawless, and had me absolutely gasping for air. The jet skis and the spy stuff just floored me.
Clinton’s and Obama’s appearances were funny, but felt awfully scripted. Still, Obama felt like the better appearance of the two, perhaps because his appearance was just so unexpected, or perhaps because he recognizes bears as the #1 threat to America.
Too bad we didn’t get to see the grit-off though…

@mrtigger001,
No I am not a U Penn student. I live in the Washington, D.C. area. It would be cool to meet someone and talk about this episode though. There was a lot that happened last night (as you can tell from the taping report that bowl of petunias has provided a link to) It’s too bad I’m going back home this morning.

@Colbertgirl,
BTW, Stephen serenaded the audience last night with the song he tried to sing to Michelle Obama.
My question about last night’s episode who gets the Colbert bump?

This last show from Philadelphia was the best of the week and has become a favourite for this past year.
And John Edwards’ participation was The Moment of the episode. What a wonderful man. Mr. Edwards is an inspiration, and if he is not picked as the Democrat running-mate for your Fall Elections… then he should move to Canada because we need him as our Prime Minister. Seriously, members of the Colbert Nation, we need him up here.

Mike–
Lol, you’ve fallen in love with the Western NC accent? Aww… I’m indirectly flattered by that. No one falls in love with our accent. I’d be even more flattered if I myself had one. But I don’t. I’ve got the boring non-regional dialect going on, and I don’t even know how i avoided the accent.
omnie–
I do agree that this week, Stephen went kinda soft of the guests, especially the big-name guests, and it sort of skewed the line between real satire and fake satire, but I think we can go easy on them for this week at least. The whole premise of being in a new city and having these huge names booked, he didn’t want to scare them away by being so hard on the predecessors, plus, he probably wants to have them back on the show at some point, so you might as well butter them up now.
Overall, I still can’t come down from the Colbert high. I actually had trouble sleeping last night because I couldn’t stop thinking about it and grinning like an idiot. That’s when you know a show deserves an Emmy: when you fee the after-show adrenaline high just from watching it. Anyone who’s ever done a live performance knows what i’m talking about when I say “after-show adrenaline high”.

@Amandalvy & omnie
I think Amandalvy’s guess is about as good as it gets. New set, new location, new audience even (which, by the way, is like 5 times bigger than his usual audience), it might’ve been problematic going in-your-face with his guests because the reaction may be less predictable than back home in NY.
also, stephen isn’t always consistent in the severity of his satire.
i have another theory though. It’s quite evident from Democralypse Now and other jokes that Stephen feels that the Dems are tearing themselves apart, so maybe he didn’t want to cause a further rift by hammering them. in a way, last night’s episode could’ve been read as a unification of the candidates. any opinions on that guess?

@mrtigger001–
I agree as well. The fact that they all decided to come on the show was probably the biggest shock for everyone in the media who’ve been saying that they’re ripping the Democratic party apart. Especially with the whole story line that Hillary fixed the screen, then lo and behold, Obama appears on the screen. It’s almost like they’re saying without one, the other wouldn’t have been their either.

…”there”, not “their”.
My goodness, I cannot type today.
(Sorry for the double post.)
I would like to add something though. –
Stephen is still 2nd on the Time 100 poll and I swear if he doesn’t win, especially after last night’s show, I will probably pitch a hissy fit. Right now, the fact that I cannot vote anymore is eating away at my soul. We HAVE to get him to #1 you guys! Right now they’re technically tied, but Shigeru Miyamoto has over 200,000 more votes!

@ mrtigger001,
I agree — I thought only one of them would have appeared on the show to try and upstage the other’s campaign. But, I think both of them appearing the show together sort of shows their attempt (at least) to unify the party. Whether or not that actually happens remains to be seen, which I think can be judged by neither person’s answer to the question of whether or not they would choose the other as their running mate after the nominee is chosen. There was an awkward silence after that question was posed during Wednesday night’s debate.
And yes, John Edwards was fabulous — wonderful job on The Word, writers! One of your best yet!

We were there last night, too, if you’ve read some of the other comments from folks who were there (except for clueless reporters), you’ve gotten a good feel for how it went in the theater. Seeing the edited version, they pulled it off well with little time to spare before air.
Nobody’s mentioned, though, that the audience was reminded before the show that we – and the guests – were there to have fun, this was a comedy show, though we all know it’s political satire too. The writers did a great job of putting together material that stuck to this, and the theater audience showed respect, it was a great time.
As somebody who produces tv, the way the show was pulled together and cut for air was impressive – and on the first and second showings (11:30 pm and 1:30 am ET) it ran over by over a minute into the next hour so all the credits could run (which means they had to drop either promos or commercials instead of cutting out more of the show itself). I really respect Comedy Central and whoever decided to do this, everyone who worked on the show deserved to be recognized, just as Stephen shook hands with all on the stage. (It appears the shows that have aired on Friday essentially bail on the credits to fit in the half hour, my wife noticed this this morning and we saw it again on the 8:30pm ET).
