Guest alert: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) scheduled for Monday’s ‘Colbert Report’

Tips of the hat to WordsWithGrace and Nancy for alerting us to the press release put out by Sen. Bernie Sanders, the Independent from Vermont who will be the next to face off against the now red-hot Stephen Colbert on Monday’s Colbert Report.

WASHINGTON — Can Bernie Sanders crack up the nation?

The Vermont senator will give it a try Monday when he appears on “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central.

Sanders was invited to appear on the popular cable show by comedian Stephen Colbert, who portrays an irreverent TV anchorman with a sarcastic view of the news. The senator, an independent, said he has no idea what Colbert will interview him about.

“I’m a little bit nervous, but I’ve been on the Bill O’Reilly show a couple of times, so it can’t be any worse,” Sanders said Thursday, referring to the conservative Fox News show.

. . .

“Amid all the laughter, it’s an opportunity to talk about things like the need to end the war in Iraq and the collapse of the middle-class,” Sanders said.

Those of you familiar with Sen. Sanders are likely to recognize him from his “Brunch with Bernie” segments, airing on Fridays on “The Thom Hartmann Show” over the last five years. Yes, that show broadcasts on Air America Radio. Sounds to me like we could be in for some fireworks between “Stephen” and Sen. Sanders on Monday.

P.S. How cool is it that the press release says that Stephen “invited” Sen. Sanders? When you consider how competitive it must be to get a booking on his show, you have to think that anyone Stephen takes the time to invite is someone worth hearing …

I live close enough to Vermont that there’s some Sanders influence here. His bumper stickers say “BERNIE FOR SENATE.” Who else could get away with that?

Sanders is basically a socialist if my memory serves. This will be awesome.

Looking forward to watching this interview — especially since Stephen invited him.

I have tickets for Monday’s show, but I know nothing about Sanders so my response so far is “um… yay?”

But Father James Martin is also listed as a guest, presumably to discuss the pope’s visit. My little Catholic heart is happy.

The only thing that worries me ever so slightly is this: “Among family and friends, I do have a sense of humor. But before millions of people? I don’t know.”

Senator, please don’t try and be funny. Let Stephen do the jokes — trust me, it’ll be much, much better that way. Good luck!

@Lisa,
I had the same reaction as you.

I liked this statement:
“I’m a little bit nervous, but I’ve been on the Bill O’Reilly show a couple of times, so it can’t be any worse.” I would be so much more nervous about appearing on O’Reilly’s show than TCR.

@Lisa

Yeah, it’s definitely not good to try to be funny unless you’re an actual comedian. Stephen will outclass you and outgun you and you’ll just look lame.

Usually on my own blog, I try to inject some humor into the articles I write, but when I covered Stephen, it was so easy because he did all the humor for me. Next to him it always looks like you’re trying too hard to be funny, so it’s best not to try at all.
