Loyal No Fact Zone reader mrtigger001 has published a wonderful guide with lots of interesting content, and not too many spoilers of the actual show tonight. Wanna know what it’s like to go to the show live? Read on! (I left the spoilers to his site, this excerpt is just his Q&A experience.)
This… Is The Colbert Report! – Part 2 of 2 – Live Taping
Q&A – Almost Doesn’t Count
Then the unthinkable happened. Earlier in the day as we were lining up, staff members were asking people in line if they had any questions for Stephen, and they wrote down our questions and our names. I contributed one: “Who would be the most difficult person to nail that’s alive today (please don’t include yourself)?” Then later, Pete called out the names of the people whose questions were chosen.
AND THEY PICKED ME!!! Holy crap!!! I get to ask Stephen a question???!!!
I got really excited. They took us backstage for a bit to give us some directions and warned us that Stephen might not get to every question. They were in a hurry since Gov. Ed Rendell, the guest for tonight, was in a hurry to get to the Democratic debate. Stephen then came out and the adrenaline in the room easily went up by a factor of 100. He did The Colbert Spin again (he really likes that move, doesn’t he?), then Q&A began.
Q1: How bad of a punishment did you get from your wife after the night you made out with Jane Fonda?
- Stephen: “[laughs] She was NOT very happy that night. Oh and one more thing, I didn’t make out with Jane Fonda. Jane Fonda made out with me! And Gloria Steinam as well.”
Q2: How would YOU answer a 3 AM phone call?
- Stephen: “I would get my assistant to answer it.”
Q3: Some idiot doing a poor Forrest Gump accent asks if Stephen can do a better Forrest Gump accent than he can.
- Stephen: “No.”
Then they cut off Q&A and we had to start the show! I was completely devastated. I was two people away from achieving a state of Nirvana. And it was taken away from me!
DAMN YOU FORREST GUMP!!!!

Oh, mrtigger001, I feel your pain for you!!!! You were totally robbed: the Forrest Gump impressionist wasn’t worth it and like we need another Fonda question!!!!
But all in all, sounds like a great show (and we know from the SWC commentary how much Stephen loves cheerleaders . . .)

If only you had a handful of shrimp to throw at him. You’d be all, “BubbaGump this!”

This was a great report mrtigger001! I was happy to read that Stephen was finally able to sing the song that was cut off the night before.

Aw too bad mrtigger001, you question was MUCH better, if that’s any consolation – I know it isn’t :( At least you were there! ;)

I love reading show taping reports. Great job mrtigger001!
I have to agree with everyone, the Forrest Gump question was just a waste, as well as the Jane Fonda question, really.
Just curious, what was your question going to be?

@AmandaIvy,
Mrtigger001′s question was, “Who would be the most difficult person to nail that’s alive today (please don’t include yourself)?”
TCR tonight, even with mrtigger’s spoilers, was wonderful. Gov. Ed Rendel was a crackup (I’m not from PA, so I don’t know any of his bull****). As goofy and “childish” as Stephen’s in-the-field segments can be, this one really made me laugh. (Most of them do, but it was especially appreciated this evening.)
The way my mind works: The Liberty Bell segment’s “Trolley Song” reference would have been perfect if Frida Kahlo wasn’t the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s current name exhibition. An accident of connectivity, I realize.

Lol, sorry about my lack of brain-usage. I read your question in your report and I guess it just didn’t sink into my brain. (That seems to happen a lot with me.)
I agree too, with laughing at nothing, tonight’s in-the-field segment made it hard to breathe, especially when he was fighting with the guy about putting his book on the shelf. And he did actually get to touch the Liberty Bell after all!
It also doesn’t help that one of my best friends went to Philly just last week and she’s got all kinds of pictures of her in the same places he’s gone… up the “Rocky Steps”, and with the statues of the Constitution signers.

haha, Stephen acted so childish during the Phila. tour, it was great.
it was also so interesting to see him go places that i’ve been. i’ve run up the rocky steps before (it’s a 20 minute run from my dorm to the museum of art), and of course i’ve seen the liberty bell. maybe i’m just obsessed, but it makes you feel this eerie connection with stephen.
okay, i’m obsessed.

@mrtigger001: So sorry you didn’t get to throw out your question to Stephen! I can only imagine your pain! You may still get your chance at a future taping of The Colbert Report, no? Thank you so much for your reports from the front lines!
I understand your feeling connected to Stephen through places you’ve been. I’m originally from D.C. and when I saw Stephen walking across the Mall and visiting the National Museum of American History, I felt a connection too…because I’m obsessed too! My friend works at the National Museum of American History, but she unfortunately didn’t get to meet Stephen….which is just as well because then I would be green with envy.
Sorry. Long posting.

Thanks mrtigger001 for such wonderful accounts of all your TCR adventures in Philly! You’re sooooo lucky to have heard Stephen sing just for you guys.
All in all, I think what they did with bringing the show to Philly is just wonderful. Every day has been more exciting than the one before, and there’s a little surprise for us every night. I seriously hope they consider doing this again someday. Nicely done!

I agree that having Stephen answer one of your questions is equal to achieving nirvana. Just last Tuesday, while in NYC, I had the chance myself, and I asked him to roll my D20 die. He obliged and played with it a few times during the taping(never on camera, though) and kept it in his pocket the entire time. He gave it back to me at the end of the show, saying it belongs in the Smithsonian because he’s a National Treasure now.
Stephen reconfirmed my belief in karma, and the experience rocked my world :)
