FEATURE-Arizona city seeks moat to secure Mexico border

(This is part of a series on U.S. border fences)
By Tim GaynorYUMA, Ariz., March 13 (Reuters) – Most plans to gain control of the porous U.S.-Mexico border focus on some combination of fence. But this city in far west Arizona is looking to build a moat.
Faced with high-levels of crime and illegal immigration, authorities in Yuma are reaching back to a technique as old as a medieval castle to dig out a “security channel” on a crime-ridden stretch of the border and fill it with water.
“The moats that I’ve seen circled the castle and allowed you to protect yourself, and that’s kind of what we’re looking at here,” said Yuma County Sheriff Ralph Ogden, who is backing the project.
. . .
Can we say, “Who’s Riding Stephen’s Coattails Now?” Of course I thought of Stephen Colbert when I saw this article! After all, in his 2006 commencement address at Knox College (links to the video can be found here at Colbert University), Stephen quite famously advocated the building of “a flaming moat, filled with fireproof crocodiles” to keep out immigrants. And he’s echoed that sentiment on his show, both in his interview with Bay Buchanan (video available here; thanks WordsWithGrace!) and, more recently, in his interview with Lou Dobbs (in which he called for “flaming trenches, filled with fireproof …”).
Since that Dobbs interview with Esteban still cracks me up, I’m embedding it below:

@Ms I, DB and crew:
That NFZ quote widget is positively eerie more than one would expect.

I am worried… I think some people is taking Stephen’s ideas too seriously…

I don’t know if this is good news or bad news, but the Bay Buchanan interview is still available — right here:

It’s part of our latest new course at Colbert University, Nailings 101:

Thanks, WWG!
I updated the post to add the link. It’s odd, but when I looked for that clip this afternoon, it came up (with the screencap and everything) in response to the search at the new Colbert Report site, only to flash the “This video is no longer available” when I tried to play it.
I agree that there’s a bit of ambivalence in my reaction to your news (there are so many other segments that I’m anxious to see on the site first, like the clip of The WØRD “Not” on signing statements), but I’m grateful for the link.

@ Ms. I,
I had the same problem in trying to update links to certain sections of CU, in that CC still hasn’t made all their videos available yet so I wasn’t able to view them either. I’m guessing it’s part of their “conversion” process of uploading particular videos to the new shiny site. I’m hoping they’ll be done soon, but so far, so good. Love their new site!
