Thoughts and links for Pete Dominick’s SIRIUS Indie Talk interview with Stephen Colbert

Heroes GBL85 and dtrainpdx posted links to the interview here and here already; I haven’t been able to test the links because my work computer doesn’t have the right software (oops), but having caught the interview during the broadcast, I will say that it’s worth a listen. Thanks, heroes!

Warning: the language you are about to hear includes words that this blog would spell with asterisks and other symbols. In other words, there’s some “adult” language in the interview, so plan your listening options accordingly.

Okay, bearing in mind that I just finished listening to this not long ago, here are a few of my impressions (if anyone cares):

  • It always cracks me up when Stephen (not “Stephen”) lets his dirty mind come out of his mouth. And the fact that he (a) obviously has quite the dirty mind but (b) just as obviously isn’t *totally* comfortable sharing that aloud makes for an hilarious juxtaposition.
  • It was interesting hearing him talk about the strike, and I think it’s very cool that Allison can tell when Stephen agrees with “Stephen”.
  • How fascinating to hear that the line between Stephen and “Stephen” was blurring during the Presidential campaign! In retrospect, I can kind of see that, judging by some of the footage of his activities in South Carolina from that period.
  • The part of the interview that struck me most was when he was once again discussing why he doesn’t want his children to watch his show (i.e. because he doesn’t want them to confuse his off-camera emotional sincerity with his performance-based ‘sincerity’). Not actually knowing Stephen in real life, I can only state my opinion: out of character Stephen is worlds away from “Stephen”. As much as I enjoy “Stephen”, it’s the out of character guy that makes the show so compelling. I was talking to Lisa See once (after she’d been on the BookExpo panel with him), and we agreed perfectly — each of us having only spoken with Stephen for a matter of minutes — that he was one of the kindest human beings we’d ever met. Again, it’s just my opinion, but I don’t think anyone would mistake the character for the man.

Thanks to everyone involved (Stephen, Pete and our download gurus) for bringing us this great interview!

The link from GBL85 worked great for me and I just finished listening to it.

I just love Stephen’s dirty little mind (and mouth). There’s something about a person who’s so kind and intelligent and funny but also has such a dirty little side to them…I don’t know what it is, but it gets me every time. : )

Great interview or greatest interview? Tough call…it’s up there with the iTunes “Meet the Author” that’s for sure.

Stephen did *not* just try to explain what a…(uhhh…I’ll just use the initials…) D.P. is, did he? I’m a little shocked. Impressed…but shocked…and somewhat pleased that he’s almost as dirty as his fangirls (and boys).

  3. Thanks so much to the Heroes who provided this recording for those of us who don’t have Sirius!! (And to Pete and Stephen for doing it in the first place, of course!) It was wonderful to hear Stephen talking so freely, and to hear him interviewed by someone who has shared so many experiences with him — that was really a treat!!

  4. p.s. Some of the most interesting parts to me:
–Pete and Stephen bonding over how much they envy singers
–Pete talking about watching the audience as the time for Stephen’s entry gets closer, and asking them ‘can you feel your heart beating’
–Stephen saying his daughter ‘totally gets’ the show now

The links worked perfectly (thanks GBL85 and dtrainpdx) and I really enjoyed the interview. I felt like Stephen was much looser than I’ve ever heard him here and I love Pete. Thanks so much for making this easily available.

    Thanks again you guys!
    I love this interview.

He just seems so loose and laid back and modest. Such a difference from the character. It’s great.

Thanks so much GBL85 and dtrainpdx for uploading the interview! I love the image of Stephen doing pilates in his sweats.

Thank you!!! That was great. I always enjoy listening to the out of character Stephen.

There was so much good stuff packed into that interview: The WHCD, working during the struck shows, etc.

I knew Stephen looked like he’d been working out a lot lately. I first noticed it during the Starbucks segment but I had guessed that he had been doing weight training. I never thought of pilates.

The joke about passive-agressive coughing was priceless.

It was interesting to hear that those close to Stephen thought the line between reality and satire sometimes appeared to be blurred during the presidential campaign. A lot of the time I felt the same way, especially when I tuned in to things like non-TCR footage of Stephen in SC and his phone call to Brian and the Judge.

It was funny when Stephen censored himself halfway through the D.P. discussion. I’ve always been impressed by the way he can talk about sex so freely. He definitely doesn’t get embarassed as easily as most people and we all know his mind can go to some some dark places. In one of the SWC commentaries, I remember Stephen mentioning that he did online research of urban slang to come up with some of the terms they used (I don’t remember if it was a commentary for the movie or one of the episodes). I wonder if Stephen actively tries to stay current with urban expressions and language in order to connect with the audience or if he just somehow picks it up naturally. I know I sometimes have to research expressions I’ve heard on TDS and TCR. I did not understand why the D.P. joke was supposed to be funny until Stephen began to explain it.

I could go on and on about this interview but my comment is already too long so I’ll stop now…

i like how the iraq war veteran who lost his leg didn’t’ want to go to the tcr studio and meet stephen because he doesn’t “like politicians.”

Thank YOU heros! That was SO much fun to listen to. I loved his comment about singers. Speaking from experience though, singers may sing the same thing over and over again but they beat themselves up pretty well over how well they sing it each time, so it’s not all “phoning in.” ;)

I have to echo everyone’s sentiments and say thank you as well: I listened when it was on, but I was interrupted by a phone call, so it was nice to be able to go back and catch what I missed.

    @One of the Heroes:

I remember wondering a while back how Stephen stays so current, but then it occurred to me that a lot of his writers and staff are in their 20s, so it probably isn’t too difficult for him to stay “plugged-in.”

  20. vigwig says:

I copied some choice quotes from the radio interview with Pete Dominick–
    A motto to live by:
“Carved above my door – If it’s hard, it’s sexy”
On doing TCR during the strike:
“It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done and I’ve never been sexier, or felt sexier …that’s for other people to judge my sexiness.”
    On pilates:
“Nothing makes me feel manly-er than doing the “mermaid stretch”
    On Fame:
“People recognize me (whispered) I get crazy tail now ;) Pete: “You get pets?””
    On singers/musicians:
The same f*#kers in the audience…are just as excited the 50th time they hear Copacabana …and I can’t do the same joke twice.
    On the WHCD:
“A tool like me got to do his jokes in front of the president.”
    On running for President:
It wouldn’t have been a joke if it weren’t real… I came very close to believing my own line of crap when I was running for president, cause I had to sincerely engage with people
    On TCR:
The show creates narratives where we engage reality on parody,… we don’t ask reality for its permission. We engage with reality directly and then that juxtaposition between my distillation of bullsh*t and the reality of BS…What I do is so wrong, and so overtly wrong that it becomes a measuring stick – comedically, satirically, what’s like me in reality…if it’s like me it’s probably BS!

    Thanks vigwig!

“…that’s for other people to judge my sexiness.” I say ‘Guilty!!’

I love Colbert’s ‘adult’ language…God bless America and Stephen Colbert for “engaging uniquely in an open democracy…”
“to the most powerful man in the world.”

  22. vigwig says:

Your welcome, I think the verdict on sexiness is in! (YEA). I agree there’s something particularly adorable (and sexy) hearing Stephen, in all his sweetness and light, “talk dirty.” IMO some of those comments are just begging for icons.
