Dutch

Got this hot tip from Thomas:

The Dutch Comedy Central has announced some of their plans for 2008, including… airing the Colbert Report. See the following (Dutch) text (courtesy of MTV Networks – Netherlands):

    In 2008 gaat Comedy Central verder met nieuwe afleveringen van de huidige populaire series en met publiekstrekkers als ‘The Office’ (US), ‘Scrubs’, ‘The Daily Show’ en ‘The Sarah Silverman Program’. Verder worden er later in het jaar diverse series gelanceerd die nooit eerder in Nederland te zien waren, zoals ‘The Colbert Report’, een spin off van ‘The Daily Show’

The first sentence basically says that they will air new episodes of the mentioned shows (including the Daily Show, they air the Global Edition over here), while the second sentence says that later in the air they will start airing shows new to Dutch audiences, including ‘The Colbert Report’.

Thomas also asks, “Does this mean the ‘Colbert Report’ Global Edition is also coming this year?” I wish I had an answer, but unfortunately I just don’t know yet. We’ll get the word out as soon as we can, though!

Yes, finally. But I do hope they won’t air the episodes a week later, like they do with TDS: Global Edition. Have to watch it on CNN or online (Thank God for thedailyshow.com) to get my fresh TDS instead of week-old stale TDS

“In 2008, CC will continue with new episodes of current popular series and audience grabbers like TO, S, TDS and TSSP. Furthermore, several programs will be luanched later in the year that have never been shown on Dutch TV, such as TCR, a spin off of TDS”

They forget to mention that a Dutch version of TDS “De Nieuwste Show” (The Newest Show) just flopped massively due to lack of funny by the Dutch wannabe funnies. Especially the host apprarently was very not funny. Most of the makers come from the Dutch version of ‘Whose Line is it nyway’ (“De lama’s”/The lamas).

PS: Yes, I am Dutch, and I’ve lived in the green, orange and pink provinces (Brabant, Gelderland and Overijssel), while my family is from the aqua one in the South (Limburg).

BTW: Did you know the brown province in the center (Flevoland) is younger than I am?

And yes, I am happy Stephen like to pick on the Belgians, and not on us, except when he refers to us as dope smoking hippies. I know we are (sigh), but really Stephen, we are also the largest XTC and amfetamine producer in the world! Get your fracts right Stephen!

@Stefani and Nepkarel,
I enjoyed reading your comments.

I am always impressed by it-getters from other countries. Because Americans tend to be so egocentric it’s hard for me to imagine many US citizens understanding political satire from a foreign country. Many of us would not know enough about the culture and politics of another country to get it.

That’s great! Now if only they’d also start airing Strangers with Candy I could die happy (from a drug overdose, of course).

@ One of the Heroes: I seriously wonder whether foreigners do get all the jokes. Quite frankly, I’d like to see how many American viewers get *all* the jokes. At best, they will get some of the jokes on the most famous politicians – Bush, Clinton, Obama, McCain and that’s it. However, you don’t need to understand anything about US politics to appreciate any of the ‘better know a XX’, ‘who’s destroying America now?’ or ‘Difference makers’ item.

Some years ago some other Dutch channel tried to air Letterman. First a day-late with subtitles, later same day without subtitles, but they never got a higher rating than 30.000 very loyal fans. And that’s simply not enough to get any ads in. It’ cheaper to sell that tv time to some home shopping channel, or just run sex ads.

CC just started in the Netherlands. Their ratings are still pretty low. I am not sure whether they will make it. Several other foreign channels have tried to set up shop in European countries, but none of them have survived very long. NBC, FOX, Sky, they’ve all tried. But in the end, there’s always a local station that will pay the distributor more for a series and get higher ratings. Even Mtv Europe has caved in and started making separate Mtv channels for each country in Europe.

Cultural differences are larger than they appear, especially in Europe where you have a different language every 300 miles.

@Nepkarel,
Very interesting!

I agree with you about American viewers getting all of the jokes. I have actually had people tell me that they didn’t like The Colbert Report because there is so much that they don’t understand. That is one reason I was wondering how it would translate to other cultures. I do hope it catches on though!
