Stephen Colbert as a hockey announcer?

By Ms Interpreted on March 12th, 2008 ·

Well, this came as a bit of a surprise to me. Entertainment Weekly has an item posted talking about the upcoming Mike Myers movie, The Love Guru, scenes from which recently screened at ShoWest. I didn’t think the trailers for this movie looked particularly funny, but I was planning on seeing it regardless, as I know John Oliver has a role in it and I’ve liked everything that he’s been involved with (of the stuff I’ve seen/read/heard, anyway).

But here’s the part of the EW.com item that surprised me (emphasis mine):

Mike Myers, Jessica Alba introduce ‘The Love Guru’ at ShoWest

Mike Myers and (a very pregnant) Jessica Alba made a surprise appearance at ShoWest in Las Vegas on Tuesday night to present clips from their summer comedy The Love Guru. After some cutesy banter in which Myers claimed to be Alba’s baby daddy, the pair introduced four scenes from the film, which appears to be a return to the live-action shtick that Myers perfected before he turned into a jolly green animated ogre several years ago … (Also popping up: Stephen Colbert as a hockey announcer and erstwhile “Mini-Me” Verne Troyer.)

. . .

Well, I think that now I really need to make sure I see this film. I mean, Stephen’s in it? As a hockey announcer? I only wish it could be for an OHL game featuring the Saginaw Spirit and his namesake, Steagle Colbeagle the Eagle!

Wow, he’s a busy little bee as of late, isn’t he? That’s awesome! Can’t wait to see it! :]

I’ve only seen one preview for that, and that was during TDS a few weeks ago. It looked like everyone under the sun (or at least a lot of people in the “6 degrees” category) was in it.

Hmm, looks like I’m going to have to see this…

Yeah Stephen does seems to be busy with this movie and the animated one coming out next year. Hmmm. I smell ticket sales in our future.

I love to see Stephen.

I have to see the movie now; though just Sam Bee and John Oliver in it was good enough.

I just hope I actually enjoy the movie, not just the appearances. I usually like Mike Myer’s work.

Not to change the subject, but… well, actually, this WILL change the subject, but… show tickets seem to be available for April 8th and 9th over at that other – official – site. Get ‘em while they’re hot!

Maybe it was really John Oliver and they got confused and thought it was Stephen.

Gabby,

I doubt it. I find it odd that nobody seems to have mentioned Stephen’s involvement in the movie before this (which leads me to believe it’s not a big role), but it’s EW.com, so they’ve covered Stephen enough to know who he is. Also, John’s role has been described as a “manager” whose job it is to get “The Love Guru” on Oprah (something about John’s client and Deepak Chopra; I’m not too clear on the premise and am too lazy to look it up now); that doesn’t sound like “hockey announcer” to me.

Oh ok, I don’t know anything about it so I was just making an assumption.

Hockey and Stephen and other TDS folk? Time for a night at the movies!

According to IMDb, Mike Myers plays an American raised outside the country by gurus. When he returns to break into the self-help business, his first challenge is to settle the romantic and professional troubles of a star hockey player. And there, apparently, is where Stephen, the hockey announcer, comes in.

It does sound like a very small part, but it still would be fun to see.

Justin Timberlake is also in it, as another hockey player who gets involved with the wife of the one Myers’s character is trying to help.

I agree with Kinaesthesia.

I love hockey, I love the TDS folks, I love Stephen, and also, Justin Timberlake has always been really great when he’s hosted SNL.

I might just be willing to fork out the $8.50 for a movie ticket.

OT: Mike Myers’ facial hair in the movie kind of weirds me out… lol.

I just saw a bit of that scene with Stephen. He’s an announcer, alright. HNIC = Hockey Night in Colbert Nation…

This movie looks like it will be funny. But the only real reason I am going to see it is because Stephen Colbert and John Oliver is in it!
