From The PETA Files blog:
It’s pretty well established that Stephen Colbert is the top name in hard-hitting, up-to-the-minute news nowadays—not only does he make or break presidential campaigns, but the dude even has a bridge named after him. And in yet one more coup for the king of late-night news, Colbert is fortunate enough to be hosting PETA President Ingrid Newkirk herself tonight, so that they can discuss the recent HBO documentary about PETA.
To mark this occasion, we’ve mocked up a brand-new Stephen Colbert doghouse for our program to help “backyard” dogs. As Ingrid puts it, “If you were stuck outside on a chain for your whole life in all weather and no love, this might at least make the people in the house over there come by once in a while, just to look, and you could bark at them to pass the time.” Who needs a bridge when they can have a PETA doghouse with their face on it? You’re very welcome, Mr. Colbert.
Here’s hoping the “Colbert bump” we’ll get from this appearance brings us animal liberation by the end of the week.

This woman is one of the most evil pieces of crap to ever live.
I won’t be watching tonight, and I’m disapointed in Stephen for having her on.

Would you, in a calm and mature fashion with no f-bombs, like to elaborate on your position?

I’m no fan of PETA, but I’m gonna watch to see if a) how bad “Stephen” can offend her and b) if shades of “real” Stephen will come out.
Also, I don’t think anyone still living can be more evil than Karl Rove (except, quite possibly, Kim Jung Il).

@DB:
Honestly, no, because I’m not sure if I could without f-bombs. But I love this site, so I’ll try.
I managed a humane society for five years. I own three wonderful rescue dweebs. I’m pro spay/neuter, pro pitbull, pro dogsledding, pro pet ownership and y’know what? I LOVE dog shows.
…All things she’s against.
There’s great websites to check out that expose PETA and the bad things they’ve done, but this is a family-friendly blog.

I’m going to agree with M here. I don’t appreciate PETA’s unbelievably sexist advertising, in which women’s bodies are used as a way of promoting veganism and vegetarianism. The Philippines Bureau of Customs seized several sex dolls from PETA recently, who used the dolls to protest against KFC in Thailand. Along with the doll, they had a banner reading , “KFC Blows.” Real classy, PETA.

Just a reminder to everyone that just because Stephen has someone on as a guest, doesn’t mean he agrees with their position (see Bill Kristol, the numerous atheists, etc.) — quite to the contrary, it has nothing to do with it. His primary goal is to create good theater, and someone as extreme as Newkirk is almost certain to provide that. One of his main criteria for choosing guests is whether the person elicits an emotional reaction in Stephen’s character. And how could the head of PETA *not* elicit an emotional reaction in red-blooded, meat-eating “Stephen”?

Ditto on the sexism issue, meaculpa. That “I’d rather be naked than wear fur” ad campaign is juvenile in the way only a roomful of middle-aged professionals can be. And, of course, PETA is nuts in a variety of other ways.
I’m actually interested (not in a hypersensitive militant way, I promise) to see whether Stephen’s going to bring up PETA’s questionable methods or just make hamburger jokes for six minutes. “Stephen” must hate PETA with a passion, but I can’t imagine real-Stephen’s a particular fan.

@WordsWithGrace:
Let us not forget the “nailability factor,” which on a scale of 1 to 10 is certain to be a 15.
Stephen has had, let’s just call them extreme viewpoints on the show before and he has always nailed them for our (and I’m sure Stephen’s) amusement. Plus, I’d love to see Stephen eat one of those tainted meat hamburgers from last night in front of her… >:-D

Don’t forget the whole “Milk sucks–drink beer!” thing aimed at college students. Yeah, because we need to encourage more binge drinking.
And if we’re going to give people crap for wearing fur coats (I’m not a fan of them myself, but I also don’t believe destroying already-dead animals is helping the cause), shouldn’t we do the same to leather coats? Or would that be too many people?

I am an animal person. I have adopted rescued animals and have also volunteered time to take care of rescued animals but I agree with the views you all have posted concerning PETA. I’m very interested to see where Stephen goes with this interview. He is usually very good at nailing people like this.
It would be funny if Stephen would eat KFC or a McDonalds hamburger right in front of this woman. I’m sure he won’t do that but it would be funny.

The fur, feathers and scales are definitely going to fly tonight! This should be good viewing. Too bad PETA can’t see the forest for the trees. Advocating for animals is wonderful but they go too far and lose just about everyone, which is too bad for others fighting for better animal husbandry in places like farms, shelters and pet stores.

@ Meaculpa and Olivia
Didn’t Amy Sedaris do some of those ads for PETA at one point?
I personally can’t stand PETA – and I’m ashamed to admit their headquarters are very near where I live.

PETA should have stuck with Amy. Now that was some clever advertising. Much better than strategically placing a fig leaf on a ridiculously airbrushed photo of Alicia Silverstone.

What’s especially funny about Amy promoting PETA is that she collects taxidermied (sp?) animals. I wonder if she divulged that detail to PETA, haha. :P

As much as I detest PeTA (because of the freezer incident, the rude comments about Steve Irwin passing, etc) I will be watching tonight.
I did watch the video she will be talking about and it does show things that the public needs to see.
People should know what they are putting into their bodies and they should see that factory farms, slaughterhouses, etc are horrible places. PeTA is good at making people see the cold, hard truth. It’s the only thing they do well!!

I don’t doubt that what she talked about happened. It’s been said, regarding the recently-recalled beef, that the cows were abused and mistreated on the way to the slaugterhouse.
However, it was Fast Food Nation that made me go vegetarian. It’s The Jungle of our time, and the author’s research and evidence is exceptionally thorough and compelling–and, of course, disturbing. (Granted, I was already considering vegetarianism before reading the book, but that’s neither here nor there.) I think it helped that he wasn’t affiliated with PETA.
As for Newkirk…she came off less nutty than I thought she would. Still nutty, mind you…just not as much.

I agree. She actually sounded quasi-normal until she got to the part about people eating her flesh at a barbecue. *shudder* Nice comeback from Stephen, though. :)

The moment I saw the head of PETA was going to be interviewed I *knew* it was going to be good TV. And it was (LMFAO @ “I’m giving out free samples.” Hehehe!!)! Though, I think Stephen got a little wrapped up in the moment as her book didn’t get mentioned until the end. But, still, I believe in the ethical treatment of animals, but PETA certainly doesn’t make me want to become a veggie.
Mmmm…now I’m in the mood for short ribs.

First off, M has his facts wrong. PETA is pro spay and neuter. They dont like dog shows because of the simple fact that they dont like dogs viewed as commodities. As a compassionate pet owner, i would expect you to relate to that. Your ignorant, and ridiculous. Also, PETA’s tactics are nothing short of brilliant. Unfortunately, people wont take the time to look at dead mutilated images of animals killed for fur. In our capitalist society, PETA and everyone else knows that sex sells. What they are doing is nothing short of marketing….for animals. Stop being closed minded, and if you are as compassionate as you say you are, than get your facts straight.

well, i’d definitely have to say that there is something wrong with the sense of humor the general populace of our society holds when people think it’s “distasteful” when a sex doll is used to promote that “KFC blows”, yet people of the same mind-frame think it would be funny to eat a dead being in front of someone who has devoted her life to the welfare of said being.
