EW.com’s “Popwatch” picks the winner of the late night three-for-all

Pundit three-for-all

From Entertainment Weekly‘s “Popwatch” (internal links omitted):

Who won the Conan/Colbert/Stewart brawl?
Feb 5, 2008, 03:43 PM | by Annie Barrett

Whether or not you’ve been following the deliberately tedious creationist/transitive property scandal between Conan O’Brien and off-and-on teammates Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, I think we can all agree that anything that brings these three together for an extended brawl scene — complete with stunt stair tumbles, slo-mo face smushes, and recycling bin torture — is a beautiful thing.

. . .

The three late-nighters all appeared on each other’s shows last night. You can see the Daily Show and Colbert Report’s segments here, but it’s fair to say both were weaker-willed leadups to Conan’s main event. So who won the actual brawl? Based on a strict formula of facial expressions + reverse pivots x general inanity, I must award last night’s MVP medal to Stephen Colbert during the came-out-of-nowhere dance party. Those were some sick moves for a Frenchman. Also, to my dear seedy warehouse buddy Conan, this is what you get for prematurely shaving that hot, hot beard.

Heh. I’m not sure what it says about me that I found the “transitive property of Huckabee” anything but tedious, but I can’t deny that Stephen’s moves during that spontaneous dance party had me howling.

The sheer ridiculousness of this whole thing is just… well, made of awesome. But Jon’s shuffle-in-the-background had me laughing the second time around.

And what’s wrong with geeking out to the ‘transitive property of Huckabee’? I think we could have a new theory here.

  2. dustdevil says:

I wonder if there’s some online “Leroy Neiman-izer” where you can upload your own jpgs, and it comes out looking like a Neiman painting? So weirdly pretty.

    A few general comments:

    1. Jon with a recycling bin on his head reminded me of Sponge Bob.
    2. Nobody’s mentioning Stephen with the nunchuks? [*edited for spelling boo-boo!]
    3. Besides bringing up visions of ‘Fight Club’, did anyone else flash on the multiple fantasy confrontation from ‘High Fidelity’?
    4. “Sick moves for a Frenchman”? Conan’s movers were pretty sick, even for an Irishman and Jon … don’t.
    5. Like we didn’t know Stephen would win this one on style alone, dancing or no.

  4. Ms Interpreted says:

Fair’s fair, though; those shots of Conan punching into the camera, immediately followed by shots of the top of Jon’s head as he was punching up into the camera … that about did me in right there. :)

  5. Jennie says:

@MsI – agreed, but I had mentioned that in a previous comment so I didn’t add it to my list of notes here. Pretty much everything from the ice skates on was rofl funny.

  6. dustdevil says:

    @Jennie
oh yeah, nunchuk Stephen was teh hawt.

  7. Ms Interpreted says:

    @ Jennie,

True, dat. I just meant, if anything would have taken the vote away from Stephen in that MVP fight, it would have been that (for me, anyhow).

That whole thing was brilliant, though. Man.

  8. Lisa says:

Lest we forget Stephen’s scotch tape “ammo”? It only flashed on the screen for a millisecond, but it had me rolling. And yes, the spontaneous dancing — who else would’ve started that?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  9. Jennie says:

@MsI – which reminds me… kudos to the director, crew and editors of that piece.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  10. vigwig says:

@ Lisa, the scotch tape did me in as well and the dancing was the best.

  11. MadMoll says:

I enjoyed the two stagehands not quite out of the shot at the beginning of the Main Event…

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  12. Michele says:

    @ Jennie
Yes! I did flash to that scene from ‘High Fidelity’! The whole thing was just hilarious and all three of them contributed funny stuff but there’s no question Stephen won.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  13. TruthPower says:

I love the trash can put Jon’s head. That was classic. And the dancing made me burst! Yes Stephen is the one to really make things super funny. Of course Stephen would do the dancing. He is a HILARIOUS hawt guy. I need to see more of this stuff. Does the dancing remind anyone of another show?

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0

  14. Mike says:

don’t you think the painting will be ebayed
