Six Degrees: John Hodgman reading this Saturday in MA

Books out loud - Hodgman readingWho out there is a fan of “Resident Expert” (and sometime PC) John Hodgman? If you’re in the neighborhood of Hadley, MA, you’re going to want to get yourself to the American Legion Hall this Saturday to hear him read from his hilarious compendium of “world knowledge” The Areas of My Expertise. There’s more information from The Phoenix:

Road Trip Alert: John Hodgman and Thurston Moore in Northampton

Coolest-reading-of-next-week award: Brookline native John Hodgman (click link to read Mike Miliard’s hysterical interview) — whose jobs include “resident expert” on The Daily Show and, of course, the PC in the Mac-vs-PC commercials — shows up to read from his The Areas of My Expertise, alongside Kansas poet Ed Skoog, Small Beer Press’s Kelly Link and McSweeny’s/Nerve short-storyist Rachel Sherman.

Playing DJ for the evening: Thurston Moore. We don’t know what he’ll be spinning, except that he’s not the kind of dude to play his own tunes . . .

IF YOU GO:

Having been to one of John’s readings over a year ago, I can vouch for this being absolutely worth your while. It looks like he won’t have Jonathan Coulton to play the role of “troubador” this time around but, c’mon, it’s John Hodgman! How could that not be awesome?!

Anyone who can’t spell but has a sense of humor about it is a friend of mine :)

And I’ve now been to the show in Hadley. It took, oh, about three hours to finally get the main course at this meal, but it was well worth the wait. Thurston Moore did his thing in the background (on ‘the wheels of steel’ as John deadpanned prior to reading) and John regaled the audience with tales of his celebrity sightings on airplanes, a game of ‘pick out what is false’, and the meat of his bit, a reading of the entire transcript from the jury duty orientation video he has done for the state of New York (he said he would do one for Massachusetts, but apparently we skip juries and go right to the tying up and drowning). And there was much merriment. Although I had ordered a copy of ‘The Areas of My Expertise’ last week (yeah, a bit late with that purchase) I bought another copy and John signed it as we chatted about his work and the writer’s strike as well as what goes into writing a TDS or TCR. Underneath his signature he wrote: Thank you for buying two copies.

The end. feel free to imagine indents and paragraphs in my ramble.

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0
