Support the TDS/TCR Writers! Operation Superstantial Truthiness is ON!

By DB on November 21st, 2007 ·

Ok, we’ve been sitting patiently, waiting for the moment to strike sexy and hard in the name of the Colbert Nation.

Nation, that time has come.

Operation Superstantial Truthiness has been officially launched! Negotiations with the WGA and AMPTP continue to give us a roller-coaster ride of hope and frustration. We want to make sure we have a bold, visible, and amazingly large front to present to the powers that be that WE ARE THE COLBERT NATION! And we love our writers! And dammit, we want our shows back, and we’re not going to take this anymore!

We’ve got multiple different phases to this plan to support the writers of “The Colbert Report” and “The Daily Show”, and we need everyone’s help in supporting us to show the passion, the power, and the persistence that is the Colbert Nation.

Phase I – Pencils2MediaMoguls

Over 700,000 pencils were purchased through this initiative from fans all over the country. Here’s a pic of the pencils that were distributed in New York City.

Pencils2MediaMoguls

Phase II – Fans4Writers and “Food For Thought”

Our first attempt at a fan gathering to help the writers on the picket lines was a success. Click here to see the reports and pics!

IF YOU WANT TO ATTEND FUTURE EVENTS AS A COLBERT NATION REPRESENTATIVE AND/OR A FAN OF THE DAILY SHOW:

Register with NoFactZone.net – we will be sending mailings when we begin the planning phases to help recruit people who can help. We’ll also have suggested attire, the meeting place, and what to bring. Because these tend to be short-notice events as they only plan the picketing for the following week on Thursdays/Fridays, we will most probably be asking those of you participating to bring a small amount of snacks/beverages with you (maybe $10-$20 worth) instead of trying to pool our money together via PayPal. We’ll also give you some ideas for creating t-shirts to wear, and the time and place to meet before heading out.

Phase III – Call the sponsors

Call the sponsors of the shows to let them know that you support the writers and that you will not be buying their products as long as they continue to pay for advertising on the networks who are not doing everything they can to end the strike.

Here is a sample script of what you could say when you make the calls:

My name is ________________. I am a consumer calling to tell you that I support the TV writers in their ongoing dispute with the television networks. I regret to to inform you that I am no longer comfortable using, buying, or recommending your company’s products due to your company’s continued financial support of the networks by paying them for television ad time. Thank you.

LOL – much love for the video!

I’ve heard that rumor about Les Moonves, too (it was in Rob Kutner’s Cinema Blend interview, and Nikki Finke reported on a similar theme yesterday or the day before). Quite impressive, I must say.

I can’t get back to NY next week, but I’m with you in spirit, gang.

On those days I am not working, I am at the pickets as member of SAG/AFTRA in support. I will be more than happy to ‘wrangle the tri-state Heroes if they come out

Hi-larious video :-)

I sent in my $20 for the pencils. They’ve also got a widget on the unitedhollywood site, as of yesterday 206,000 pencils had been donated. Do we know when they’re going to deliver them to the studio heads?

Also, if we can’t get to the East Coast or LA, can we help with $ for food contributions? Thanks for keeping us in the loop!!! I’d REALLY love to help swamp Sumner Redstone’s phone line, maybe we can force him to have to get THREE new assistants.

The updated pencil amount is 240,000 per the widget…

I’m totally on for a mass represent on Tuesday! (Besides being psyched at the chance to connect in person with other NFZers!) And I’ve got a car if anyone thinks there’ll be any loading up of any stuff involved.

I’d LOVE to go to the rally, though, I’m hesitant to commute from Jersey to the city alone.

And what’s this I hear?
I’ve been given assurances by both a TDS writer and a TCR writer that if the negotiations fail on Monday (and there is a strong possibility of this happening)…

Whhhaaaa? But, all my eggs are already in Monday’s basket.

@Lisa:

As of right now, there’s no protests scheduled for Monday. Which is why we were shooting for Tuesday.

Leave it to Will Forte and Kristen Wiig to make pencils sexy again…

Oh how I wish I could be in the city next week! But a few boxes of pencils will have to do.

Three cheers for anyone who makes it to the rally, and let us know how it goes!

Actually, I meant the negotiations on Monday. Dear God I hope it goes well…

Man, I so want to go on Tuesday! If it was the week after next week, I’d be golden.

Pencils it is then. For now.

…and with my tail between my legs, I bid you all good night and good luck. It’s been fun…

Done, w/ a message to the moguls attached.
Keeping fingers and toes crossed for Friday’s negotiations. I hope the rally on Tuesday won’t be needed but I’ll try to make it if it is.

Duh, am I already registered with NFZ or do I need a password?

Hey, all. In the spirit of the holidays, we want to ask everyone to please remember to be family-friendly in these comments. Pretty please.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Strike supporter here. Got my t-shirt. Support the strike on my blog. Signed the petition. Educated everyone in my realm of influence. But I think this pencil thing is a mistake and thousands of dollars that people could donate some place else might be wasted.

As of today, there have been 240,000 pencils donated (that we know of) or 20,000 boxes to the tune of $20,000. That’s a lot of money that could go to fund something we know for certain won’t get smashed to bits and sent back in crates to strike captains. That money could be used for whatever – duct tape, shirts, signs, the fund that helps writers who can’t pay their bills during the strike – anything that isn’t “iffy”.

I know campaigns aren’t cheap. But the “unknown” is what bothers me. We don’t even know if the pencils will pass the mail room. $20,000 worth and still counting! I guess I’m the only person who thinks a crap shoot is just not a good way for people to donate their money.

I’m 100% behind the writers and the strike! Pencils? Not so much…

@ MaryAn: I appreciate your sentiments – we’ve had the “cons” of this project discussed before on the blog and many have debated the pros and cons of many types of fan action.

At this point I think it’s a matter of “solidarity”. We’ve asked the writers what they would like us fans to do as a group to show support and they asked us to join this effort en masse to maximize the impact.

Am I the only one that finds Will Forte attractive here? Something about him.

I may be going insane here, but does pencils2mediamoguls.com have part of the NFZ sidebar on it? That site seems to be making my browser sad (though I bought pencils! go writers!).

It’s a damn shame I’m down in Mexico right now or I’d be at that rally with them.

I noticed that too – not that I mind at all, but I was just wondering who put it there, that’s all. :)

Does thedailyshow.com count in terms of telling sponsors we won’t be buying their products? Cause I know that web content is a big part of the WGA’s demands, and that Guinness commercial is plastered all over the site.

Reply

24

@Aaron Haynes:

Yes, absolutely TheDailyShow.com counts. Of course, the ideal thing during the strike is to boycott the site, and the videos, but barring that, I think writing the sponsors on the site is an excellent idea. Including Guinness.
