I honestly have no idea if this is a super-dry sense of satire, or if this is a serious concern from people at “The Colbert Report”. From ColbertNation.com:
A MESSAGE FROM THE COLBERT REPORT STUDIO
Monday, November 5th, 2007 at 6:15 pmTo: Gary Spitz
From: [redacted]
Subj: Colbert ‘08
Date: Nov 5 2007 16:35:35 ESTMr. Spitz,
We have received word that there are users in the Colboard.com messageboards and Colbertnation.com comments bins advocating violence against members of the South Carolina Democratic Executive Council, who last week voted to reject Stephen’s application to be on the primary ballot.
We ask that these threats cease immediately. Additionally, we ask that you alert the rest of the Colbert Nation to this important request.
Thank you for your prompt action.

I was wondering if “Gary” and/or “Avery” were going to be affected by the writer’s strike. From other bloggers that I’ve talked to at Comedy Central, they are not part of the Writer’s Guild, so it’s probable that “Gary” and/or “Avery” are not going to be a part of the strike as well. So we have the entire strike to look forward to Operation Facestrong pictures and zingers like this post.
(sigh)
I received yet another verification yesterday that “The Colbert Report” will be getting a TheDailyShow.com style site makeover. Here’s hoping that they are given the resources and support from the network to get this project done as soon as possible.
EDIT:
We’ve received a comment from someone claiming to be a TCR staffer [Note: this is UNVERIFIED] and they had this to say about the situation:
About the S.C. Dem. Executive council – Some of them are getting calls and emails that are abusive. If your readers care about what [Stephen] wants, please tell them he wants this to stop. No one deserves personal abuse.
Thanks for the forum.
Stay Strong!
They want the CN administrator to actually interact with the site? What kind of craziness is that?!
Anyway, I don’t know about the CN comment bins, but I don’t remember seeing any threats of violence on the Colboard (a whole lot of whining, though). But since I can only vouch for the threads I’ve read about the campaign, and this is the internet after all, I think it’s safe to say this isn’t a lame joke.

I’ve seen threats ov violence on the Facebook groups, but with 1,000,000+ members, you’re bound to get one or two irrational crazies. Let us just hope that no one acts upon these immature threats. The last thing we need is someone taking the joke too far and ruining it for everyone else.

Also, if TCR is getting a new site like TDS, is that just going to replace the TCR section on the CC site, or meld with Colbert Nation? ‘Cause as far as I know, TDS hasn’t got its message board back.
I know the disappearance of the Colboard would make a lot of dreams come true, but I’d miss it.

I wonder maybe if this is a (bad) satire on Ellen DeGeneres’s issue with her dog Iggy… It’s a long story; if you aren’t familiar with it, Google it. It culminated in Ellen begging her die-hard fans to stop threatening violence against the head of the rescue organization that took Iggy away.
Avery and Gary creep me out. Like Stephen says in I Am America – “I don’t like books. Can’t tell when people are being funny.”

Yeah this reminded me of the Ellen/dog thing aswell, I’m assuming its supposed to be a joke…anyone that is making threats is blatently joking around…right?

Gaia, why the disappearance of the Colboard would make a lot of dreams come true? That’s a nightmare!
I’ve been out the loop for urgent family issues… I’ll reconnect and read through the threads on the board. If you have suggestions about the most urgent issues please forward them to me.
Thanks

I wonder if the threats are a direct result of this little tidbit of insanity: http://www.colbertforsouthcarolina.com/

Hmm…I’ve seen complaints, but I haven’t yet seen violence. I feel guilty now because last week I did write an email to the Democratic Council, but I don’t think I was threatening or violent. Anyway whether it’s through “Gary” or not, it’s a clear message for this stuff to stop, so I’ll pay attention.

I think the guy who has a link on this site to his info about Daily Show/Colbert tapings is right…I think some Colbert fans are “s*%t-bat crazy”. Take a pill, folks. I think you’ve taken the fanaticism to a new, unhealthy level.

Yeah – they should definitely focus on the Facebook crowd. The Million strong group has all of the contact info for the SC Dems up (phone numbers, e-mails and all) so it’s no wonder they’re getting spammed.

I would like to see TCR videos stand alone and not meld in with CC or the Colboards. As to
Gary/Avery, they’re just one of the reasons I stay off that site.

They have all the information that they need to contact “the crazies” directly and they should.

What an “allegedly” ridiculous immature email from the SCDEC! As if everyone who “supports” Stephen even posts or reads the Colboard message boards! (esp. when the No Fact Zone is quite superior in all ways).
I for one don’t even bother to check the website and I’ve been an ardent Colbert fan for quite some time, even wearing a Colbert for President since last Xmas. (Time off for washing of course..er…maybe…)
And to even post the complaint there is quite overdoing it from “Gary.”
It’s like a cease and desist letter sent to the wrong person, 2 cities over. “Gary” can’t control fans, and it is quite bizarre for the SCDEC to think this would end the matter.
I am not advocating “cruel messages,” but I am overwhelmed at the absurd way this is being handled.

Wow, that is just plain nuts. :-( What are the CN “fans” thinking? It’s gone from bad to worse over there. Jee-zus…

I like the people on the colboard. Even the jerks. But I’m not going back there until the strike is over and I know the writers are being treated fairly.
I feel dirty going there.
And not in the good way that I usually feel dirty going there.

I too (and everyone here at NoFactZone.net) do not support or advocate violence against organizations like the SCDEC.
I do however openly encourage you to PRAY, to God, or whatever it is that you call Jesus’ dad (Buddha? Tom Cruise?), to wreak terrible divine vengeance on all of Stephen’s enemies.
Just don’t do it in a public school, or you might get expelled, so I am told.
Amen.
