Video of Stephen Colbert talking to the press in South Carolina

By Jennie on October 29th, 2007 ·

Brad Warthen, columnist for the South Carolina newspaper ‘The State’, has posted a video of Stephen chatting with the press in South Carolina during his campaign there this weekend. You can read more about the video on his blog here.

It’s fun to see just how charming Stephen can be with the press…

Hehe, he’s so charming.
You can really see his presidential hand-gestures in full swing though. Especially in the beginning!

What is the first thing he says? I listened to it several times and I can’t seem to figure it out… Mumble mumble peach sales mumble mumble they had no idea I was running for president?

He should run a charm class for the other candidates.

“They had a spike in peach sales, would you mind doing that again?”

Wow…seeing him schmooze the press as if he were an actual candidate is kind of…disturbing actually.

Wow. That man can blend in *anywhere*. I can practically see the ‘charm and charisma’ knob dialed all the way up. It truly is a thing to behold.

I don’t find his demeanor disturbing or particularly schmoozy–he’s playing ‘candidate’ to be sure, but underneath that it strikes me he’s just at home, displaying a side of himself that is less familiar to us.
S.C. is a different world, which I think us non-S.C.-ers will be learning a bit more about in the months to come. I like the flash of suspenders. Is that a new ‘candidate’ thing?

SazzrahUK, I was thinking the same thing! I’m from Charleston too and I find my accent coming on a lot stronger whenever I’m around other Southern people…

My god, that man could charm the Buddha into going on a diet…

The “flash of suspenders” was the tie.

@Murasaki: I dunno about disturbing, but it was definitely a little weird. It’s very entertaining at the same time, though.

Also loving the hints of an accent.

Gasp….. I neeed air… He can’t change ties on the fly like that…. “I hope I have a serious answer…” and his southern accent… what’s not to MELT about? The man stands more than a chance if he keeps doing what he is doing already.

Actually, folks, he wasn’t so much talking to “the press.” That was essentially a gathering of S.C. Democratic Party luminaries. There was one journalist there besides me, and he wasn’t working. I was essentially there for my blog, which I hope you will visit:

… and I might add, a fat lot of good all that schmoozing with the Dems did him, seeing as how they rejected his bid to be on the ballot today.
