Fantasy Colbert League Weekly: October 29 – November 1
By
Welcome to No Fact Zone’s weekly roundup of ‘Colbert Report’ guests, created in the spirit of the oft-enjoyed Fantasy Colbert League. While we can’t start up the online version of the game again, we can make it so that you can get the information you need about the guest before they come on the show.
Just like you, we want to be it-getters before the interviews start. So we’ve compiled brief bios, issues or events that Stephen might bring up during the interview, and a fun Fract (Freedom Fact) to impress your fellow viewers during the commercial breaks.
Read, enjoy, and see if you can anticipate how Stephen might nail each of the following guests!
Monday, 10/29: Richard Berman
As the executive director of the Center for Consumer Freedom, Richard Berman wants the government to stop deciding what you can’t eat. He’s a Washington lobbyist fighting against passive public acceptance of government control over food, drugs, alcohol and restaurants. He wades into controversy over government regulation of foods and substances like milk, trans fats, or caffeine, and he might not take kindly to Stephen’s attempts to nail him. Let’s see how spirited this interview gets!
- Fract: Dr. Berman also goes by the nickname ‘Dr. Evil.’
Tuesday, 10/30: Craig Venter
Remember when Stephen had his DNA mapped? Tonight, he’ll be speaking with Dr. J. Craig Venter, pioneer in genomic research and author of ‘A Life Decoded: My Genome: My Life.’ The J. Craig Venter Institute, created in 2006, is a combination of several large institutions including the Institute for Genomic Research. Dr. Venter was a guest on the ‘Report’ on February 27, 2007.
- Fract: Dr. Venter’s team published his entire DNA sequence on September 4th, 2007.
Wednesday, 10/31: Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson
Retired Colonel Wilkerson was chief of staff to United States Secretary of State Colin Powell, and left the government when Powell did in 2005. He has since gone on to sharply criticize the planning and execution of the Iraq war, particularly Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and their decision-making process. He has publicly proposed impeachment of President Bush and appeared in several political documentaries.
- Fract: In September 2006, Wilkerson joined retired General Wesley Clark, friend of the ‘Report,’ in supporting Senator Jim Webb of Virginia.
Thursday, 11/1: Walter Kirn
Walter Kirn’s novel ‘Thumbsucker‘ was made into a 2005 movie with Keanu Reeves and Vince Vaughn, and his latest novel, ‘The Unbinding,’ is an Internet-only novel published through Slate magazine. Stephen will likely discuss Kirn’s recent article in The Atlantic Monthly about multitasking: Kirn believes trying to do too many things simultaneously dumbs us all down and “is driving us all crazy.” He believes that we may be able to do more, but we’re absorbing less information while we do it. How many cell phones and Blackberries will Stephen bring to the interview table?
- Fract: Fract unavailable due to editor spilling coffee on her keyboard just before the toast burned and the fire alarm went off…

I have to chime in about Beman – he’s the equivalent of the character in ‘Thank You For Smoking’ – head of an organization that wants to eliminate labeling of genetically modified foods. He’s not interested in freedom of choice, he wants to eliminate the public’s right to know what they are eating and our choice to eat non-genetically modified foods.
Sorry, but I’m a bit passionate about this topic…

I did some photography for the theatrical opening of Thumbsucker. Mike Mills and Walter Kirn = awesome! Can’t wait for that.
