Here’s some interesting information on the “About the Author” page, courtesy of Colbert University guru WordsWithGrace:
As the happy — dare we say giddy — owner of both book and audiobook of IAA (ASCY!), I couldn’t help noticing that the “author photo” is a striking illustration of Stephen as the Hulk brandishing an American flag while crushing a bear — one I’ve seen before, in guest Joe Quesada’s comments about being on the Report back in August 2006.

Part II
Quesada told the story to Newsarama.com a while back:
NRAMA: How about stuff we didn’t see… anything left on the cutting room floor that didn’t make it to the broadcast?
JQ: You have to understand, when you do a show like Colbert, what makes it and Colbert funny is that the guest don’t know what’s coming, you just have to roll with it…. I did, however, screw up badly with one thing. The week before we had asked Colbert if he would like to be rendered as a Marvel character. His response was the Hulk, so, I did a mock cover of Colbert as the Hulk stabbing a godless killing machine (bear) through the head with an American flag. Richard Isanove kicked major butt and digitally painted the thing and just made my mediocre pencils look outstanding.
The plan was to pull out this large blowup of the piece and present it to Colbert. I had it right by my feet but we got into such an exchange that no moment seemed appropriate to present it (I’m sooooo sorry Richard, I’m such a loser). I had so much more I wanted to say about comics in general but we were knee deep in “Civil War.” After the segment, both Colbert and I slapped our mutual foreheads because we never got to it, but the producers told us that actually it was better that we didn’t because it would have ruined the flow of what they thought turned out to be a very good interview. That made me feel great because ultimately this is about the people that do the show being happy with the outcome and the star of the show feeling like it worked well for him.
Besides, they used the piece as the graphic heading into the commercial…
Little did Mr. Quesada know that his kind gift would end up being immortalized on bookshelves and CD racks across the Nation! Congratulations!

Speaking of cover art, I’d like to chime in on how utterly hilarious I think the cover of I Am America is. Did anyone else notice that if you look into Stephen’s eyes, you see eagles? (Literally. Check it out.)
