Stephen Colbert to run for President in South Carolina – in the Democratic AND Republican primaries
By*balloon drop* HE IS DOING IT! *balloon drop*
We’ll have more as it comes, including Motherload video, but we had to share the news for those who haven’t yet seen “The Colbert Report” this Tuesday evening. Stephen Colbert appeared on ‘The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’ this evening, and when asked by Jon, “Are you planning on a run for President of the United States?” Stephen responded:
Whoa, whoa, whoa! I’m glad you asked, Jon. Because tonight, I, Stephen Colbert, am officially announcing that I have decided to officially consider whether or not I will announce that I am running for the President of the United States. And I will be making an announcement of that decision very soon, preferably on a more prestigious show.
And then, in the first segment of ‘The Colbert Report’, he officially made the announcement, with accompanying balloon drop, that he was, in fact, running for the office of the President of the United States … in the South Carolina primaries, as a “Favorite Son”. A Favorite son is, according to James Bryce, a politician respected or admired in his own state … but little regarded beyond it. But, as Stephen pointed out, Bryce said this in 1888, and that was before cable.
Colbert has not declared a running mate for his primary bid, although he did suggest Mike Huckabee, Vladimir Putin, or possibly Colbert (pronounced COL-bert). The bumper stickers on the show featured the campaign slogan “Truthiness and Justice For All.” He also mentioned in his interview with Senior Political Analyst for CBS News, Jeff Greefield, that he will be running on both the Republican and Democratic ticket.
EDITED TO ADD THE VIDEO!
We’ve also got the pre-announcement from tonight’s Daily Show recapped here (video now included). Marvel at the wonder that is Stephen Colbert, PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE!

Is it a joke though? Some people have said this, I disagree and think he is truely trying to do this. Opinions Anyone?

I think he’s really running in SC to make a point. His opportunity to rub both the press’ and the candidate’s noses in their own hypocrisy and BS is golden.

I don’t know if he’s serious. He’s smart enough. He’s not jaded from what I can tell. But I don’t know his stances on issues. I would think he’d have trouble getting older people to get him a serious candidate and I’m not sure young people would be comfortable pulling the trigger. The worst thing is that his show would leave. What would we be forced to watch ‘mind of menccia?”no thanks. So many issues out there. I know I don’t want another republican, I’m hoping that obama and edwards take the ticket fi he’s not serious.
Who knows for sure, but perhaps his announcement will get jon stewart on board. 2 really smart savvy guys in touch with what is really going on, I could go for that.
OF course he could just be going to make a fool out of everyone at the Debates which would be priceless.
