I actually really enjoyed the whole show. I agree that there were plenty of odd moments, but I think that Stephen really got to show off some of his improv chops throughout the interveiew, and most of his jokes were sharp. I love that he moved back and forth between the two Stephen’s. It became a bit of a guessing game. The fake applause was stupid, and it doesn’t seem like an idea of Stephen’s. Larry has to plug other shows and future guests throughout his show, and I felt that the interview was strong enough that those asides weren’t really distracting. Showing clips of Colbert while he was talking to Larry didn’t make any sense though. But having him watch selected clips served a purpose as he commented on the genesis of some of his ideas. It was more engrossing than most Larry King interviews I’ve seen

It’s always great to see Stephen but The Larry King show is bizarre at the best of times. I thought that last night the show and the host were particularly odd. He jumps from issue to unrelated issue a really jarring way.

All the graphics and photos and clips being shown during the interview? Distracting. Wasting precious interview time by having Stephen watch clips of himself? Awkward. The weird piped in fake applause and King holding up that random Italian cookbook and going on and on about it at the end? WTF?

However, I thought Stephen handled all the oddness with grace. I loved the toss to Anderson, particularly the first one, but my favorite moment was when King asked Stephen the ages of his sons and he answered “9 and 5″ and King replies something like “mine are 6 and 8″. Stephen handled that much better than I did at home–eek! Isn’t he like 75? I also enjoyed hearing Stephen’s advice about getting into comedy (“get into trouble”). Fun to hear the crew laughing in the background and I’m looking forward to that podcast.

See, I liked the tosses because of the interaction between Stephen and Anderson; they seem to get such a genuine kick out of one another. The interview that Stephen did with Anderson on TCR was like that, too, and I enjoyed watching them because of it.

The transition was awkward with regard to the content of what Anderson was going to be discussing in his show, I grant you, but I think that’s all but unavoidable when you work in news. (One can debate endlessly about whether AC360 and CNN in general are really “news” — there are some interesting dicussions about that general topic in the Daily Show and Philosophy book — but that’s a different story.) To that end, the more pertinent question is whether it’s a good idea at all to have a non-news show “throw” to a news-oriented show.

The tosses to Anderson were so awkward. He’d be like hahaha-stephen-is-funny-oh-wait-people-died-so-on-a-serious-note…

I don’t know, the transition just seemed so inappropriate…
