I’m looking for a video of this show myself – but if you haven’t seen Stephen’s appearance on Larry King Live last night, Editor & Publisher reports on Stephen’s news making announcement:
Stephen Colbert Announces as a Candidate for President — Seeks Nod of Both Parties!
By E&P Staff
Published: October 11, 2007 10:05 PM ETNEW YORK Appearing on Larry King’s CNN show Thursday night, Stephen Colbert was accused by the host of using the publication of his new book as a platform to run for president. Colbert happily confirmed this, saying that he would seek the nomination from both parties.
When King said this was a “cop out,” Colbert, host of his own talk show, The Colbert Report on Comedy Central, said that it actually demonstrated true “courage” because “I could lose twice.”
He said he would run on a state by state basis, perhaps starting in his home state, South Carolina, as a “favorite son.”
He would not say that he was unimpressed by the current crop of candidates — but did allow that Fred Thompson’s campaign slogan should be, “Do Not Disturb.”
When King had asked, with a thumb pointing up, if he planned to run for the top office, Colbert said, “You mean God? No, dial it down one notch.” He said the presidency was the only for him since “I am not a bridesmaid.”
His book is titled “I Am America (and So Can You!).”
Does this mean that Hillary will have to stop quoting him?
I don’t think it counts if he’s out-of-character.

This is unbelievable. But for sure he could win twice.
I hope there are at least 20 talk shows in USA that will have him as guest to promote that book like he did on the Good Morning America, NPR and Letterman.

Gahhh, CNN International is *killing* me! The first half of the interview was cut, as was the end of the show. I missed Stephen’s whole announcement!

Sorry, Jess, et al.
I’m not sure how soon it will happen, but just so you know, Larry King’s interview with Stephen Colbert will be podcast at some point. He (King) told Stephen that the next podcast posted (after the current Kid Rock) will be their interview.

I was looking over the interview, and I really don’t think he announced it. He just said that he hadn’t made a decision yet and talked/joked about the hypotheticals about if he WERE to run. At least that’s the way I interpreted it.

If he decides to run, for sure he will win. So that will be an important decision for America.

The link to the interview is here: http://www.trooker.com/flashplay.aspx?id=3028
I haven’t had time to watch the whole clip yet, so I don’t know if it was cut off, but the part I did watch was good!

I slipped in and saw it right from the top. Very gracious on the part of both guys. What a week! Mr. Colbert can now just go home and roll on his bed saying ~ I’M FAMOUS!
congrats

Reading the transcript, I really don’t see that as Stephen seriously announcing a Presidential run. That seems to be more of a discussion of a hypotheical, i.e. “If I were running, this is how I’d do it…”
I don’t think he really meant it. I’ve yet to see the video to know for sure, though.

Haha, don’t think he really meant it. But oh how fabulous that would be lol.

Considering how much he loves his job, I don’t think he’s actually running. I received it as a joke…

I saw the interview in whole, and he didn’t announce he was running. It was still more “if I were to run” talk… And as much as I would love a Colbert white house, I don’t think I’m willing to give up The Colbert Report to get it, not now at least. Maybe in 2012…

Considering how much he knows that this country’s political system is fucked up, I’d say he might feel feel a responsibillity in taking up the challenge of turning The Colbert Report into an presidential election campaign. Comedy Central most probably will let him use the half hour slot to do his campaign.
It would be challenging, requiring a lot of talent in writing speeches, making bold propositions and using his talents at improvisation to convince he might as well be the guy that can changes politics.

I firmly believe that Stephen should not run for president, even as a joke. Fortunately, I don’t think he will.

I didn’t interpret it that he actually announced it. I think his announcement just opened the door for a possible political career, as he only cited his interest in the field. That being said… STEPHEN COLBERT FOR PRESIDENT!!!! (lol)
