If WordsWithGrace whetted your appetite for the Fresh Air® with Terry Gross interview with Stephen, you’ll be thrilled to know that it’s available now. From NPR:
Colbert Builds ‘Report’ with Viewers, Readers
Fresh Air from WHYY, October 9, 2007 · Stephen Colbert, host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report talks about his book I Am America (And So Can You!) and his successful television show.
The former correspondent and contributor to The Daily Show created his own Emmy-nominated late-night show to parody Bill O’Reilly’s The O’Reilly Factor.
In I Am America, Colbert targets race, religion, sports and the American family as well as more mundane topics like breakfast cereal.
Just so you know, Stephen was also on “All Things Considered” on NPR today. I just finished listening to his interview, it was 10 minutes long at the tail end of the show. It was much more character Stephen than the Fresh Air, and also v. funny (of course).
They had Paul Krugman on earlier in the show, which gave Stephen a chance to continue his “feud” with “Beard-y.” And when asked why he’s not a big fan of the NY times, his response: “I read it because I have to understand what the enemy is doing. I call it the Juice because like steroids, it makes me very angry and it shrinks my testicles.”
Hee!
The website for ATC says they will be posting the audio for the show at 7pm EST.

Thanks, entropy, I noticed that when I was linking “Fresh Air” bit. I’ll make sure it’s mentioned when the segment is posted; you can be sure of that. :)

I love the part with Stephen screaming as the cast is coming off, and then the ubiquitous Subdued Intellectual Public Radio Man does his serious voice-over “Support for NPR comes from Barnes & Noble, publishers of their classics edition of the essential tales and poems of Edgar Allen Poe…”

I love the picture on the Fresh Air interview page of T. Snow signing the cast & the “halo” of the White House sign behind Stephen… I wonder if he staged it :-)

I was so glad Terry asked Stephen about the Parade Magazine interview (in particular, her observation that the titles and blurbs inside sounded like the kind of thing Stephen satirizes); and I was so relieved to hear Stephen’s answers. I thought it sounded so manipulated, and I didn’t want to believe Stephen really wanted to ‘share’ that stuff again. (I had the same misgivings about the Vanity Fair article). I thought the picture was pretty creepy, too. Evidently Stephen found it a little unexpected also.

Hearing him talk about religion almost makes me want to believe in it.
Awesome interview. I’m glad she called out the angle the Parade interview took. She went on a bit long about the WHCD thing, though, but in a less awkward way, I guess, than most people would have?

It’s interesting (to me) that the other interviews today (and probably all week) are mostly talking about the book and its material, which brings out the Character; while Terry barely mentions it and just engages Stephen the Man. Another reason I love her!

Great interview. I just wish she hadn’t asked him about the WHCD. Yes, his speech was brilliant, but Stephen’s done a LOT of brilliant stuff since then too.

That interview was the bee’s knees.
I love that she says she loves it when he insults NPR. (In part because it reminds me of an Even Stephven segment…”I want you to disagree with me…. And insult me.”)
