Fantasy Colbert League Weekly: October 8-11
By
Welcome to No Fact Zone’s weekly roundup of ‘Colbert Report’ guests, created in the spirit of the oft-enjoyed Fantasy Colbert League. While we can’t start up the online version of the game again, we can make it so that you can get the information you need about the guest before they come on the show.
Just like you, we want to be it-getters before the interviews start. So we’ve compiled brief bios, issues or events that Stephen might bring up during the interview, and a fun Fract (Freedom Fact) (Freedom Fact) to impress your fellow viewers during the commercial breaks.
Read, enjoy, and see if you can anticipate how Stephen might nail each of the following guests!
Monday, 10/8: George Saunders
George Saunders is an American author of short stories in the style of Kurt Vonnegut. He teaches creative writing at Syracuse University and contributes to several magazines including ‘The New Yorker,’ ‘Harper’s,’ and ‘GQ.’ His latest work is ‘The Braindead Megaphone,’ a nonfiction collection of essays and articles. Look for Stephen to challenge Saunders’ views on the consumerism and corporate culture.
- Fract:George Saunders cites Steve Martin, Monty Python and Dr. Seuss as several of his many influences.
Tuesday, 10/9: Stephen Colbert
Stephen Colbert might just be America’s Greatest Pundit, but he’d tell you it’s not about him… it’s about you, the Heroes, who are watching him every night on his show. Stephen made his mark on ‘The Daily Show’ despite Jon Stewart’s liberal agenda and Steve Cah-rell’s amorous advances. Two years ago this month, he burst onto the late night scene with the half-hour show ‘The Colbert Report.’ His appearance at the 2006 White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner ignited the non-mainstream media – and he’s already created a frenzy with his new book, ‘I Am America (And So Can You!)’.
- Fract: As a regular reader of this site (you are, aren’t you?) you probably know all of the fun fracts about Stephen Colbert. So instead, tell us how you think Stephen will interview Stephen! Will we see a six-minute-long Formidable Opponent, or a pre-taped skit? Will we see the real Stephen, out of character? Will someone else interview him – and who? Jon Stewart? Anderson Cooper? Papa Bear? The possibilities are endless. What do you think he’ll do, heroes?
Wednesday, 10/10: General Wesley Clark
Tonight Stephen welcomes the first four-star general to have the honor of appearing on ‘The Colbert Report.’ As the Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO from 1997 to 2000, General Clark commanded Operation Allied Force during the Kosovo War. He became a drafted presidential candidate in the 2004 presidential race, and almost joined the 2008 presidential race, but now supports Senator Hilary Clinton. In 2004, General Clark founded the political action committee WesPAC to elect Democrats to public office, and to strengthen America’s leadership both domestically and internationally.
Thursday, 10/11: TBD
Stephen will be a guest on CNN’s ‘Larry King Live’ tonight at 9pm EST. Set your Tivos! Other TV appearance reminders: Stephen will be on ‘Good Morning America’ on Tuesday, October 9, and ‘The Late Show With David Letterman’ on Wednesday, October 10.
- Fract: Larry King was a guest on ‘The Colbert Report’ on March 1, 2007, during which he called Stephen an egomaniac.

Repeat on Thursday? Sad. But this is still going to be a great week full of Colbert appearances. I can’t even imagine how they’re going to conduct the interview on Tuesday, but I can’t wait to see it!
I found this link, to a little comic, in the Colbert Nation facebook group:

So fun to watch that interview again! Thanks for putting it up. You know, he’s had a ton of terrific interviews since he’s been on. He makes even the most boring guest seem interesting, plus he has people on that no one else would have. All those authors of geeky/science books? Love ‘em.

RE: 10/9 SHOW
Whatever they do, I hope it involves Building Manager Tad. Wearing something loose.
Stephen is America (and so can Tad).
(Sorry for the lewdness; I’m just a bit…. Actually, I don’t think I’m at all sorry for the lewdness!)

I think Colbert’s appearance on TCR will be like a long Formidable Opponent, but I think the idea of John (that’s how it SHOULD be spelled) filling in on the interview portion would be amazing!
