Early review of ‘I Am America (And So Can You!)’ audiobook – no spoilers
ByAs we reported yesterday, the “I Am America (And So Can You!)” audiobook is already available from Audible.com and iTunes TODAY!!!!
And here’s one of the first From The Field reviews of this wonderful audiobook. From Three Months’ Time blog:
Early Thoughts – I AM AMERICA (AND SO CAN YOU!) Audiobook
October 5th, 2007 at 8:21 am (Uncategorized)Don’t worry, I’m not going to spoil anything that you die-hard fans out there didn’t already know.
So, ITunes and Audible.com released the audiobook recording of Stephen Colbert’s I Am America (And So Can You!) last night at midnight to promote buzz around the book’s release on October 9th (Tuesday!). After taking forever to actually offer it, ITunes finally had it available for purchase this morning, so I did. I’ve listened to about two-thirds of it (not incredibly carefully as I am at work) and have some initial thoughts, which shouldn’t spoil anything for any of you, but make you more excited to get it. If you aren’t excited for this book or audiobook, don’t read this because I’m about to turn into a fangirl.
Three words: Buy. This. Book. Seriously, this thing is so outrageously funny that I had to bite my lip on the bus this morning to stop from laughing out loud. It didn’t work half of the time. The audiobook is like a three and a half hour episode of The Colbert Report as spoken to you by a combination of Stephen Colbert, the character, and Wilford Brimley. For any of you familiar with the audio book of Wigfield, Colbert sounds a lot like Fleet Hollinger on this thing, which is fine by me. I don’t want to spoil any of the content. If the audiobook (which is abridged) is any indication, the book is going to be a must-have.
Specials that the book doesn’t offer are the wonderful guests on the audiobook. First up is Amy Sedaris. Listening to her part was like listening to Jerri Blank acting like somebody else. The voice was definitely Strangers with Candy. There are a lot of other voices on here that I can’t even place. Greg Holliman (Principal Blackman from Strangers) is on here as is Colbert’s wife, Evelyn McGee. Her part is really good. If anyone can tell me where Jon Stewart and Paul Dinello are on here, it’d be much appreciated.
The humor of IAA(ASCY)! is very Strangers, Wigfield and Colbert Report. Nonsensical, shocking, and utterly absurd most of the time, from what I can hear so far, it is also very, very silly. Can’t wait to finish it and then listen to it again and then go get the book on Tuesday. All of you should too. Good times!

Jon Stewart is Mort Sinclair (around 2:42:10) and Paul Dinello is the reformed gay guy (around I forget where). Where is Evie? I thought she might either be the cow or the soul mate.

For God’s sake, be careful listening to this if you’re driving, unless you have impeccable control of your laugh reflex!
@Laaaura: Is Mort Sinclair the old guy in the “Stephen Speaks for Me” segment? I thought that might be Jon.

I thought Mrs. Colbert was the soulmate but having listened to it again, now I’m not sure.
I think Mort Sinclair is at the very end of the first part (if you have the Itunes version) in the Hollywood section. The old guy I’m pretty sure is Mr. Colbert.

On amazon it says this is an abridged version. Anyone know if the release of an unabridged version is planned?
I’m assuming the versions on iTunes & audible (both of which won’t let me buy it because I don’t live in the U.S., @#&%!!) are also abridged?

There isn’t going to be an unabridged version. The abridged version is all that’s available. I handle a lot of audiobooks for my job, so if there was going to be an unabridged version available anytime soon, I’d know about it.

Thank you very much, Ann!
Then there’s nothing in the way of ordering it anymore, yay :)

The old guy HAS to be Stephen. I love the sports guy – wish I knew which person played him.
And I can’t decide which woman is Allison Silverman and which one is Evie. I’d say, knowing Stephen, he’d give his wife the soulmate part and have his Exec. Producer play the cow. :D

So I went into BEST BUY this morning around 11:40am, and THE BOOK WAS ALREADY FOR SALE!!! I just popped in to look around for the audiobook, which I found out was out by this wonderful website that I am addicted to! You guys rock.
Anyway, just as I was walking out, there it was! The real book, not the audiobook. And it was 25% off. I bought it immediately and am now flipping through it, it is amazing. There are hilarious little reader-interactive things to fill in like quizzes (for example, when it asks your religion the choices are either A: Catholic or B: Other)
So I am absolutely giddy looking at this book right now that I was desperately waiting until Tuesday to come out. But Best Buy has it for sale already!

From what I could tell, the Old Guy was Stephen, and the guy at the football stadium was definitely Paul. You could only hear it a few times, but when you could, you definitely could. Not sure who the Cow and the Soulmate were, although I’ve heard that the Cow is Evie, which means that maybe the Soulmate was Allison. I’m only up to Chapter 5, though – I’m pacing myself.

the ex-gay guy is Paul.
the comedian is Jon.
the old guy is Stephen.
the old lady is Amy.
God is “Stew the Meat Man”.
the civil rights guy is “Onyx”.
my gut tells me Evie is the cow & that Allison is the soulmate (though i’d be pretty pissed off about that choice if i was Evie-LOL) i def. don’t think the sports guy is Paul-that fan guy & 1 other guy were the only 2 i didn’t know-1 of them must be the name i didn’t recognize & the other must be Eric aka “Bobby”.
