View from the studio: Fly me to the Mou-ma?
By
While we don’t blog many audience “taping reports”, we do like to it when we hear more about a joke on the show or Stephen mentions a hint of “things to come”… and in this one we got both!
Sarah left a comment on our Guide for the September 18, 2007 episode explaining Susan Sarandon’s mysterious “nickname for a movie”.
If anyone was confused by the “mou-ma” — during Stephen’s introduction for the Report, he had to do two takes. The first time, he stumbled over the word “movie” (And my guest, Susan Sarandon, is in a new movie…) and it jumbled into “mou-ma” somehow. His expression was priceless; he simply gave up and cracked up, before commenting on his jokes would be so much “fresher” and funnier the second time around.
Sarah also mentions in her comments about Stephen’s strategy to win an Emmy next year. Here’s what she wrote in a message to our sister site, Colbert University:
Hey, to expand on my earlier comment about Stephen’s “American Songbook” –
An audience member, during the pre-show Q&A, asked if he [Stephen] was going to appear on/star in a musical special, jokingly referencing (since Tuesday was the first night back from the Emmy’s) his loss, two years in a row now, to classical American musical artists and their TV specials. Stephen confirmed this and referenced his upcoming release — come to think of it, I believe he called it Stephen Colbert: An American Classic, not American Songbook — a more direct reference to Tony Bennet.
In any case, he then burst into song and crooned out an incredible “Fly Me to the Moon,” only stopping when he conceded that he could sing all night [implied: that he should get on with the show]. Too bad I’m certain he was joking about starring in his own musical special — his voice is amazing!
While I would love to share a clip of Stephen singing “Fly Me To The Moon”, I hope you’ll be satisfied with Stephen interviewing Liberal actressvist Susan Sarandon, now that we’re in on the joke.

The mou-ma thing makes so much more sense now! That’s really funny! Oh, and what I’d give to hear Stephen sing Fly Me to the Moon. *sigh* :)

Murasaki and snoopypez – I hear ya! I’ve been singing that song in my head ever since I read Sarah’s original comment. I so hope he sings it on air once.
