2007 EMMY COVERAGE – Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart join in Man Sandwich with Steve Carell onstage at the Emmy Awards
Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart presented the award for Best Lead Male in a Comedy Series. The sketch was mildly amusing, and Stephen got to wear a leafblower which was pretty cool. Stephen talked about Jon’s Private Jet Sandwich being wasteful, and Stephen refused to let the Earth win. Here’s a partial transcript of their awards show pablum:
Jon: Even the very act of gathering for an awards show, no matter how green, is wasteful. Perhaps we shouldn’t eve have awards shows.
Stephen: WHAT?! Jon, if entertainers stop publicly congratulating each other, the the Earth wins.
Jon: You’re right, you’re absolutely right. We can’t give into that bastard! But what if winners were notified by e-mail or phone, if we didn’t have to …
Stephen: Like common Macarthur Genius Grant winners or Nobel Prize recipients? No, no, not on my watch, Jon. As long as Stephen T. Colbert is alive (and eligible for an Emmy) Comedic and Dramatic actors will gather to applaud each other yearly. Be it by SUV or speedboat or stacked private jet.
Jon: And the waste, Stephen? What of the waste?
Stephen: Jon, have you forgotten about … carbon offsets?
Jon: [grabs Stephen's shoulder] Yes. After this ceremony tonight, as God as my witness, I will go online, and buy a carbon credit, that when redeemed will allow some underage Peruvian boys to partially resod the Andes.
And then they helped create the moment that will be in every single 2007 Emmy montage.
When the announced the winner, Jon said this:
- Jon: And the Emmy goes to … Ricky Gervais, The Extras! Ricky Gervais couldn’t be here tonight [Editor's note: at this point, Stephen gets this look on his face like the cat who just ate the canary], so instead we’re going to give this to our friend Steve Carell.
Steve Carell comes running up to the stage, and Jon and Stephen start jumping up and down hysterically. Stephen and Steve embrace with overjoyed enthusiasm as Jon continues to jump up and down, his hands high in the air. Steve then runs to Jon and they both leap, grasping onto each other in mid-air, their faces turning pink from the screaming and exuberance. Stephen joins the hug, and the screen zooms in on the close up of Steve, Stephen, and Jon, huddled, jumping, grinning from ear to ear and Steve screaming “Yes!”. And as a final note to the insanity, as Steve releases from the group hug, he throws his hands in the air and screams “WHOOOOOO!”, and Stephen on-camera (and Jon off camera) quickly join him in one last victory hurrah before they all rushed quickly off the stage.
God, that rocked.
