So last weekend I was puttering around, doing the usual morning errand thing, when I came across a sale on Ben & Jerry’s ice cream at the grocery store. Who can resist taking a peek to see if Americone Dream is on the shelf? Not me! Amazingly enough, they did have it in stock – but its carton looked different. I bought some, ate it, suffered the brain freeze, and finally took a photo of two cartons together:
The first-edition carton is on the left, with the red-and-white stripes background. The new carton on the right shows a blue-sky-and-clouds background.
Americone Dream got a makeover! What gives, Ben and Jerry? Have they decided to make it a long-term flavor? Was it too expensive to keep printing such a patriotic carton? We’re scooping up (pun intended) any information we can find, and we’ll let you know the news as soon as we do.
Eagle-eyed reader Joe Karl emailed us via the Americone Dream Map and said he’d also found both cartons, adding, “Apparently it came out before B&J’s started redesigning all their pints with the “cow” design.” Joe collects Ben and Jerry’s cartons, and he’s noticed that the designs started changing to the ‘Blue Moo‘ artwork in early August. So far, he’s found about 10 flavors that have switched over to the cows as designed by artist and Ben-and-Jerry’s ambassador Woody Jackson.
Interestingly, Willie Nelson’s ‘Country Peach Cobbler’ was the first flavor Joe saw with the new design.
Americone Dream has also been featured on Ben & Jerry’s coupons in the Sunday newspaper. Cutting coupons may be something your dad used to do, but hey, it saves money to buy more ice cream.
NoFactZone readers, you have been an essential part of the making of the NFZ Americone Dream Map, which is still being updated. Yes! You can still email us when you find a new store that stocks Americone Dream.
And let us know if you find the new carton on the shelves!

I don’t think I’d ever seen the first design before. I *think* my carton’s the second design (although it’s at home, so I can’t be positive), and I got it fairly soon after Americone Dream came out, I think…several months ago, at least. Wait. I don’t think I ever noticed a difference though, between the images you used and my carton. Now I’m confused. But it would be awkward to call home and be like, “hey, mom, could you run upstairs and look at the empty ice cream carton on my bookshelf and tell me if it has a cow on it plzthx?” *sigh*
I’m so confused.

Yeah, I noticed this a couple months ago. I was very sad because it almost makes it feel less American. I mean, if that’s possible.

Someone posted on the Colboards about this a few weeks ago… my response was expletive filled, but let’s say I wasn’t happy at the news… ;)
That said though, if they’re switching over to the newer design, does that make the original more exclusive? I hope so – I very carefully carried mine through customs at JFK and on the plane to make sure it got back to the UK in pristine condition. It now sits ontop of my microwave… :D

If this makes the original design more valuable, I’m glad, cause I saved a couple of mine. I’m gonna miss the old one, though. It was so TCR.
I actually looked for some Americone Dream last night in my local farmfresh, and only found ice cream with the newly designed carton.

Yeah, I’ve seen the blue carton for a while now. Look at that nice clean air suppressing the glorious American flag. Those environmentalists… Hooligans! HOOLIGANS!

The only place I’ve seen the new carton in DFW is the 7-11 by where I work. My local Whole Foods all have the old carton, as does the Wal-Mart neighborhood market.

Not only the carton but it had seemed as if they changed the actual cone pieces to something different…

Gee, I guess that means I’ll have to go buy some more ice cream so my Stephen Colbert Ice Cream Carton Collection will be complete. What a hardship!
Seriously though, I like the stripes much better too. I’d be interested to know why the change was made.

I was disappointed when I realized that my carton didn’t match the one I’d seen in all of the pictures…good to see that awareness of this matter is being spread. I never even got to see the first design in person.

I have recently come across a third variation of AmeriCone Dream. This one is basically the same as the “Blue Moo” carton. The only difference is that it no longer says “new” around the edge of the lid.
