Considering he delivered the funniest line of the entire ceremony last year we all expected it. We were just waiting for the official press release from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences:
North Hollywood, CA, Aug. 30, 2007 – Alec Baldwin, Stephen Colbert, Marcia Cross, Jon Cryer, Ellen DeGeneres, America Ferrara, Tina Fey, Joely Fisher, Brad Garrett, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Julia-Luis Dreyfus and Kyra Sedgwick have been confirmed as presenters for the 59th Primetime Emmy® Awards, telecast executive producer Ken Ehrlich announced today.
…
Stephen Colbert is the host and executive producer of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” which has earned him a Primetime Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program.
“The Colbert Report” has received Primetime Emmy Awards in 2004, 2005 and 2006 for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program, Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series and Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program.
Well, OK – it is the Official Press Release from the Academy that awards these Emmys®… but as much as I would like to believe that last paragraph, I guess we should take it with a grain of salt.
Actually, The Colbert Report has 4 nominations this year for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program; Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Series; Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program; and Outstanding Director in a Variety, Music, or Comedy Program. TCR was nominated for the same 4 categories in 2006. The show had not aired before the 2004 or 2005 Emmy® awards.
In related news – Jon Stewart and Steve Carell are also confirmed as presenters at the ceremony.
It was previously announced that the 59TH Primetime Emmy Awards would be hosted by Ryan Seacrest. I had actually been hoping that this was an error in the press release (they sometimes happen, you know!) but no correction was forthcoming, so I think we have to go with it.
But count our lucky Primetime Stars… Comedian [their word, not mine] Carlos Mencia will host the 2007 Primetime Creative Arts Emmy® Awards on Saturday, September 8. This is when they give out the technical awards and others such as Outstanding Guest Actor/Actress in a Drama Series
I am almost absolutely certain that the 59TH Primetime Emmy® Awards will be airing live from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles Sunday, Sept. 16 (8:00–11:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed) on FOX.
I’m pretty sure Colbert won a few writing Emmys for his work over at ‘The Daily Show’, maybe they were thinking of that?

Wow, the Colbert Report won awards before it was created? I am not surprised, they should take away awards from other shows and give them to Stephen. I want him to win just so I can hear his acceptance speech. Same with Steve Carell, I am a huge fan of his so I want him to win anyway, but I look forward to his acceptance speeches so much.

Hey, my gut says they’re right about the impossible TCR Emmys, so of COURSE it’s true! Tip of the Hat to you, Academy PR Person Who Wrote That Article!
