Caitlin of Wonkyear.com and TraceyUK pointed out this picture of the inauguration for the new Virgin America plane named “Air Colbert.”
In this image released by Virgin America, Richard Branson, Founder and Chairman of the Virgin Group, uncorks bubbly as he and Virgin America CEO Fred Reid, left, stand near the plane named, “air colbert” as they christen the inaugural flight of Virgin America, Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2007 in New York. Virgin America’s inaugural flights, which could mark the beginning of stiffer price competition, will link its San Francisco hub with New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport and Los Angeles. The plane was named in honor of television personality Stephen Colbert of the Comedy Central program, “The Colbert Report”. Colbert was to be on location for the ceremony but was stuck in traffic due to the severe weather that flooded roads in the New York area. (AP Photo/Virgin America, Mark Greenberg)
You can find more coverage of the event from our posts yesterday here and here.

In retrospect for Branson to use the wildly popular Colbert “Brand” for his own PR/money-making purposes and then turn around and act like a douche on his show is really unforgivable.
Another instance of a too-rich person throwing a childish tantrum when thwarted. Fie on all of them.

it’s beautiful. It kind of reminds me of priscilla queen of the desert (the shot) :)

I think this is awesome. Now, I want to fly it. Cheap Marketing ploy? Maybe. Is it still fun? Yes.
And, as for his appearance on the show, I think it was just funny. Obviously he was jesting Stephen.
I love the idea. Just like I love my Stephen Colbert Ice cream.

His Colbert appearance was great and did generate the press they wanted. If you pay close attention you could tell it was all staged, but still awesome entertainment.
