I wonder if he’ll dub it “Air Colbert” . . .

Well, he’s got a bridge (sort of), a mascot, an eagle, a turtle, an ice cream . . . yep, I can see where that might not be enough. Next on the agenda, Stephen gets an airplane! And it’s for charity!

Seats on Virgin America’s JFK-SFO and LAX-SFO Inaugural Flights Auctioned for Charity
Bid on seats on Virgin America’s JFK-SFO and LAX-SFO Inaugural Flights Auctioned for Charity on eBay. Celebrity guests, hotel and bragging rights.

(PRWEB) August 2, 2007 — Virgin America (virginamerica.com), a new U.S. start-up airline, is ready to take to the skies on August 8th with a star-studded cast for its JFK-SFO and LAX-SFO inaugural flights. Sir Richard Branson, Fred Reid (Virgin America CEO), Stephen Colbert, Cold War Kids and celebrity DJ Samantha Ronson will help get the party started at events in New York, LA and San Francisco.

. . .

What: To kick off the New York launch, Fred Reid (Virgin America CEO) will be joined by Virgin Group Founder Sir Richard Branson, as well as the inimitable Stephen Colbert who is slated to christen a brand new Virgin America plane in his own honor. Special guests will then board the plane to take the party to the left coast. Meanwhile, in LA, celebrity DJ, Samantha Ronson will spin records while studio entertainment partners, celebrities and friends “walk the red carpet” at Virgin America’s LAX premier. Both flights will land at the San Francisco International Airport at approximately 1:10 pm and will be greeted by a hometown reception. Guests will then go to the launch party at Ruby Skye, where Indie rock sensation Cold War Kids will headline.

Why/How: To help disadvantaged kids get the education they deserve. A pair of tickets on each of Virgin America’s JFK-SFO and LAX-SFO inaugural flights*, as well as hotel accommodations and VIP tickets for the launch party, will be auctioned off to support SF-based KIPP. And another thing. I don’t know how it works with planes, but when they Christen ships they crack a bottle of Champagne on it. I’m sure I’ve seen the same done with planes. In which case, is he gonna use a pint of his own ice-cream? :)

Just wanted to say that I think people on the Colboard/Colbert Nation may have had a big part in this, as they were spamming nameourplanes.com.

I don’t think the site is up any more, but Virgin used to have a thing where you could submit suggestions to name a plane. A couple of years ago they named a plane “Unicorn Chaser”.

    Cheers, and go Stephen!

Didn’t Stephen have a name for his gulfstream jet if he got one? I think I remember that from a recent episode.

  8. Jennie says:

@ MsI – Wouldn’t that be “Ert Colbert”? Should we call it an ertplane?

@Cathy – On the February 6, 2007 episode he asked that we pray for his getting a Gulfstream 4 (not a Gulfstream 2 – there’s a difference and God knows what it is.) but I don’t recall him having a name for it.. I’ll keep looking.

Think we have to present our Abstinence Pledges along with our boarding passes? Or perhaps their will be some sort of Virginity Screening…

  13. Ms Interpreted says:

    @ Liz,

I’m not sure. I saw a post at SFluxe.com that says he’ll be on the flight, but that’s the only place I’ve seen that info; the eBay auction only mentions Branson and Cold War Kids. Of course, it’s possible that Stephen was added after the eBay auction item went up, but I haven’t found any other information tey.

    @ Jennie,

I thought that, too, but I figured Virgin might shy away from it because of the number of non-it-getters who wouldn’t realize that “Ert” should be pronounced like “Air”. I like that he’ll be getting his own Colbertcraft, though. Yay, glorification of all things Colbert – especially in the service of charity!

Oh, what’s another form to fill out, after waiting an extra hour of security line-ups…

Now we’re all wondering… what does this Virginity Screening Machine look like?

  15. I would love to fly Virgin from SFO to NYC on the “AirColbert” next time I get to see the Report. Can you imagine?!

You know they’d have plenty of copies of SkyMall on board!
