More on this week’s “Daily Show”/”Colbert Report” tosses

We know that the hot topic of the day is likely to remain the Stephen Colbert broken wrist story, but we’d hate for the audience accounts of the delightful tosses between this week’s Daily Show and Colbert Report episodes to get lost in the shuffle.

You’ll no doubt recall Stephen’s hilarious character break during the handoff from Jon on Tuesday night’s episode. Thanks to LJ user annakovsky, we know the story behind that break.

In a rare follow-up toss the next night, Stephen rather stonily made his way through an apology for his inability to get through the material. From Comedy Central’s MotherLoad:

Now, according to the taping report Nortia posted to the TWoP forums, we have the even more hilarious details of what happened during that taping:

. . . When the satellite link came up at Jon’s end, instead of seeing Stephen, he saw Sen. Graham seated at the desk, with his hands folded and looking very serious. The look on Jon’s face was priceless, and then he completely cracked up. Stephen had a seat on the desk, then he and the Senator sang a bit of Graham’s campaign song, which was apparently something they did when Stephen interviewed him in the past on TDS.

After that, it was time to get down to business, so the Senator went back to his seat, and Stephen and Jon got ready to do the toss. They decided they didn’t need to rehearse, so Stephen tore his script in half and got rid of it, then Jon tore his script in half. Both audiences were cheering by this point. Now just to jog your memory a little, the previous night’s toss had ended with a massive Stephen character break after three attempts. So last night, Stephen started out all serious and apologizing for being so unprofessional the night before, but then he got to the name “Josephus P. Whateverthehellitwas” and started giggling, then he got a little further and totally freakin’ lost it. I mean, it was just as bad, if not worse, than the night before. The TCR audience was howling, and Jon laughed so hard he got up out of his chair, clapping gleefully and stomping his feet, and honestly I thought I was going to hyperventilate. It was the funniest f@#king thing I’ve ever seen ever, I s#!t thee not. I thought they were never going to stop laughing. But after a pretty long time, they try it again, and Stephen is determined to get it right this time. So that’s why he was so stone-faced through the whole thing, and the TDS audience started laughing pretty much as soon as Jon opened his mouth to speak, and Jon had that big silly grin on his face at the end. It was magic, I tell ya. The highlight of the evening.

Careful readers will note that this report offers more proof that Stephen’s injury did NOT happen on Wednesday, despite what he and the Colbert Nation’s Avery have reported.

Thanks so much for these behind the scenes glimpses, heroes!
