Newsbusters reports on gay author’s appearance on ‘The Colbert Report’

I like to think of Newsbusters as the Weekly World News of conservative bloggers. (Oh, and everyone put your hand over your heart for batboy.) We were seriously hoping this guest appearance wouldn’t slip by the Newsbusters radar, and luckily for us it didn’t. From our very favorite news site, Newsbusters:

Gay Author Traffics in Stereotypes
By Melissa Lopez | July 26, 2007 – 16:39 ET

Last night on “The Colbert Report”, Charles Kaiser was on the show to plug his book, ‘The Gay Metropolis’. Hoping to get the Colbert bump, Kaiser talked about how his book chronicles the history of gay culture and society in New York starting from 1940. One of his claims is that homosexuals and African Americans are “both more interesting than white people.” He also discussed being open with who you are or else you become like Mark Foley: “You become a congressmen who sends nasty notes to teenagers over the computer.” He lastly implies but denies that J.Edgar Hoover is gay.

Stephen Colbert constantly pointed out when Kaiser was stereotyping people, whether it is dance choreographers, white straight people or Republican congressmen. “I wish I could stereotype but I’m not allowed to. I’m not gay. I have to play by the rules you make but don’t live by,” Colbert stated after Kaiser put the label on dance choreographers being gay. Kaiser jumped into the interview trying to show how exciting and interesting minorities are compared to straight white people.

Here’s the really scary part – it almost looks like Newsbusters is … *agreeing* with Colbert! This particular writer seems to think that Colbert, for once, is on her side! It seems as if the point of the article is to show how Colbert is calling out Charles Kaiser in his use of numerous stereotypes. I do prefer Newsbusters commentary that has some verbose conservative slant instead of just documenting what was said, but then again, on a slow news day like today, one has to take what one can get.

And as always, come for the post, but stay for the comments! Seriously. Go read them. They’ll make your whole friggin’ day.

    Such beautiful irony. Wasted.

If only he could have brought the little WORD window over to the interview table with him. It could have shown a pic of Ted Haggert or something, wagging his finger at all the dirty homos.

    Sign language for the irony-impaired.

Reading the comments on Newbusters was really depressing.

Wow. Those comments are quite possibly the most infuriating/depressing things I’ve ever read. How it is that people with that mentality even continue to exist is beyond me. “Exposing and Combating Liberal Media Bias”. Right. Because saying TERRIBLE things about gay people isn’t biased at all. :D

Shout Out (Hey!): Thumb up 0
