Threat #1: Bears, er, um, Dolphins!

From the Sarasota Herald Tribune:

Threat No. 1: Gulf Coast dolphins

Anyone who watches Stephen Colbert’s “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central knows the host holds no love for bears — ferocious creatures that are, apparently, a threat to mankind.

But the uber-popular, late-night comedian Colbert this week broadened his spite, putting dolphins on the same “threat level” as the bear.

In a segment Monday night, Colbert gave a nod to Nokomis and the Sarasota Dolphin Research Program as he took off on a Lakeland woman who, while feeding a dolphin, was bitten.

Colbert’s report was based on a TV piece in which a researcher in Nokomis said, sure, hand-feeding a bear seems obviously foolish, but dolphins also have sharp teeth.

“I’ve been saying it for years: Dolphins are the bears of the sea,” Colbert said. “They’re both vicious killers at the top of their respective food chains. Plus, both species harbor ill will against us for humiliating them to entertain our children.”

Colbert said he has never trusted dolphins. “Fish or mammal,” he said. “Pick a side.”

This segment was hilarious to me, because I live in Sarasota and go boating with my aunt and uncle a lot. Any regular boater out there knows who Beggar is and where she hangs out.
