So what did Stephen think of his Rain parody video?

Our very own MsInterpreted was at the show last night (and what a lucky, lucky woman she is), and shared her experiences on the TWoP forums. My favorite bit was her description of Stephen as he watched the “He’s Singin’ In Korean” video. But she also had an interesting bit about the Throw. Here’s an excerpt from her review:

The show got off to a bit of a weird start. If you’ve been to tapings yourself (or if you’ve read enough taping reports), you know that Stephen usually comes barrelling onto the set with the enthusiasm of a kid approaching his Christmas toys, races up and down the front row giving people high-fives, tosses his microphone up into the air and catches it, does the Q&A, then frolics back to his desk and kicks his heels together to kick off the show. Last night, that didn’t happen . . . but I’m not complaining because, we got to see the “toss”. They didn’t have time for much banter, but what there was was hilarious. When they first got the satellite link set up, the audiences were both going nuts (of course), and Stephen did that motion with his hands to bring the applause up and down. It made Jon laugh because, apparently, The Daily Show’s audience was responding to Stephen’s hand commands right along with those of us in TCR’s studio. Jon said they only had 26 seconds so they were gonna improv it; he said that when they cut to him, Stephen was going to be upset with him (Jon) because Stephen knew that Jon was going to bring up Jane Fonda. I can’t recall exactly how it went, but I think Jon said something to his audience about Jane Fonda’s having tried to make out with Stephen during all of Wednesday’s interview, and Stephen gave a probably-not-entirely-fake incredulous, laughing, “Tried?!?” response to Jon. Stephen had this to say about Jane: “That is one FIRM septuagenarian.” He also made a truly obscene tongue gesture at Jon for a while there (making all of us just about fall off our chairs), and Jon (giggling) told him to save it for the “toss”. You all saw the rest of it; Stephen was legitimately surprised that it was over so fast (“That’s it?!?”); it was just a hoot, and I’m so glad I got to see them do one of these “tosses” for a change.

He did his usual talking to Mark/Allison/Rich and bouncing around/singing to the in-studio music during the breaks, but the highlight of the show for me was definitely that faux Rain video. Hysterical! Stephen was grinning from ear to ear and singing along with it while the clip played, and every time it got to the “He’s singin’ in Korean” line, Stephen would just lose it completely. He was cracking up, his whole body shaking and hunching toward his desk; especially during that final, drawn out, “. . . in KOREAN!!!!” It was brilliant!

    Funny, except for the singing along with it, that was exactly my reaction to the He-SIK video as well. ;-}

    Lucky you, Ms.I – great taping to be at!!

    Awesome story! The toss was HI-larious, I thought it felt improved, and I loved the video, but couldn’t tell what the audience thought of it. I’m definitely watching this episode again!

    Matt told me to make sure I watched last night’s show.. OMF – that was hystercial – think about it – it could have been a second homage to… dare I say.. Charlene? He needs to team up with Weird Al…

    I said the same thing that that toss must have been improv’d. Oh what I wouldn’t do to see an obscene tongue gesture made to Jon. I agree, it’s fantastic to watch him when they are playing clips; I never watch the monitor (and hence miss the bit until I get home) because it’s much funnier to watch Stephen reacting and mouthing all the words. Even to other people’s segments! I am so looking forward to my next taping after reading this report!

    Great story! I’m so happy that the tosses have been live lately. They’re a great deal better. Hope they keep it that way.

    Aw, I LOVE IT!!! I can picture this and the mental picture makes me laugh about that hard.

    MC Esteban, we were *loving* that video in the audience that day. I think most of us were focusing on Stephen himself, rather than on the monitors with the video, because we would rather get his reaction shot while we could; we knew the parody video would always be available, but we weren’t going to get another chance to see Stephen’s response. I can guarantee that we were an appreciative audience, though. :)

    meaculpa, one of my friends was talking to Mark Malkoff during one of the commercial breaks, and he said that the trouble with taping the “toss” was in timing it correctly, since neither The Daily Show nor The Colbert Report starts taping at an exact, regularly scheduled time each day. He said that they currently plan on doing two “tosses” per week. My friend got the impression that they know how much the fans appreciate the live ones as opposed to the pre-taped pieces, but that the schedule coordination was the main hurdle.

    Thanks for a great report. That Korean parody is one of the funniest things I’ve seen on TV. His singing style mixed w/ the Korean and no-nothing cultural references just kills me. Genius.
